Cancel a wedding? - update

I have 2 weddings coming up in April. My Goddaughter's wedding is scheduled for April 18th (in Maryland) and a co-worker is getting married on the 25th. If you were in their shoes, what would you do? Would you cancel now? Wait a couple of weeks to see how things go (In my opinion, they are going to get worse before they get better). Would you still attend, if they weddings aren't canceled? I feel so bad for them Chat Icon

ETA: If my Goddaughter's wedding is still on, I will definitely go! I was asking to get a feel for how many people might cancel on them

Update: the wedding has been postponed until the middle of September. The venue and vendors all worked with her and although she is sad about the April date, knows this was the right thing to do (not that she had a choice at this point)

If I had a wedding in April I would definitely look into postponing. I have a feeling everyone will follow NYC and schools etc will be closed until at least April 20. I wouldn't take a chance and just to be safe, talk to the venue about postponing to a future date.

Re: Cancel a wedding?

We have a wedding this Saturday. I'm wondering if the "no gatherings of 50+ people" rule will mean it's cancelled? I don't want to text the groom to ask. They're probably already freaking out.

ETA: A wedding in April, I would wait and see what happens.

Co-workers I probably would skip but if my god daughter was still getting married I would be their 1000%. But she’s also my niece and I treat her like she’s my child.

As a guest, I would go. Especially for my goddaughter!

If I were in their shoes, I would talk to my family and see how many people wouldn't be able to come. And, how much money I would lose too. I think I'd probably go for it.

Yes, I'm going to attend if it isn't cancelled. It's a close relative.
ETA: I'm just wondering if it will be cancelled because the babysitter I had lined up to watch my kids isn't available now and IDK if I'll be able to find someone else.

I had a wedding out of state to go to on 4/4 (cousin) - they are postponing.

Honestly I think its really irresponsible to hold a wedding in these times. Putting the burden on guests to travel, etc. End of April I would probably wait and see but for the next month or so I would not be attending a wedding.

We're invited to a wedding in April and it's being postponed. I believe the venue told them they had to.

Cancel a wedding?

My sister's wedding is in the middle of June and she is trying to figure out if she should postpone it. I would think an April wedding would definitely need to be postponed. I am hoping this calm down in May, but who knows at this point.

my son’s bar mitzvah is supposed to be in June and I am going to wait until April 1st to decide what to do.

TBH I think we are going to be on state lockdown shortly. I think the decision will ultimately be made for you :(

I think only close friends and families will show, everyone else will cancel on them. Is it a big wedding with a lot of guests? I feel bad for your Goddaughter and her fiancé. I know this must really suck for them.

Re: Cancel a wedding?

Weddings in late March and April should be cancelled. One infected person at a wedding where people are dancing, kisisng hello, hugging, and touching hands could spur countles other infections. Look at Italy - weddings and funerals canceled. Birthday parties should be canceled too - school is canceled for a reason.

Re: Cancel a wedding?

Honestly, looking at how things are progressing I would say it's likely I'd cancel. In fact, they should really consider rescheduling at this point, April is not that far off and I am not confident things are going to be better anytime soon. Plus, the CDC is recommending no large gatherings of more than 50 people for the next 8 weeks which is past when those weddings are. I would very likely decline the invite unfortunately.

ETA - I know this all sucks, especially when you're looking forward to your wedding, but I think it would be extremely irresponsible of anyone to carry on with their wedding or party plans in March AND April. I agree with the above, I think the decision will be made for most everyone anyway either by the state or the venues themselves. It is just too risky.

It does mean that and it should mean that. Imagine having your wedding and then one of the older guests contracts coronavirus and dies? I would be devastated if I had to postpone my wedding and I really feel for the brides and grooms out there that are going thru this but I wouldn't want that blood on my hands.

I would go. I would also pack alcohol wipes, wouldn't touch my face, wash my hands a lot, and wouldn't mingle too closely with people.

Re: Cancel a wedding?

I was talking to someone about weddings over the weekend. I feel terrible for all the couples out there right now. So stressful.
It must be cancelled. Unless they drop the list to under 50.

The father of a friend of mine passed away last week. They still don't know what they're going to go for a service. The medical examiner said they would hold the body for some time. But at this rate it could be a month or longer before they could do anything. I feel terrible for him and his family.

Add alcohol to the mix and all that goes out the window. For me anyway.Chat Icon

Cancel a wedding?

We had my best friends baby shower and a family friend's wedding both on 4/4. The shower was just cancelled and the wedding has been postponed- they have a new date in October (luckily the venue was available and is allowing them to just move the date). I would not have attended either one, so I am glad the decision was made for me. We also have DD's bday party scheduled that weekend and I will be either postponing or cancelling depending on what Dave & Busters allows.

Yeah, they just called to let us know. It's postponed until they can find a new date that works for all the vendors involved. I feel bad they have to deal with this.
