Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

The current death rate is not accurate. The WHO and the entire scientific community have acknowledged that not everyone that has had it, has been tested. The symptoms are so mild in young, healthy people, and it's gone so quickly, that not everyone is tested. Some research suggests the death rate, when all is said and done, will be under the death rate of the regular flu.

Look at the population of China, how fast the virus spreads, and the amount of deaths. There is no way the death rate is anywhere near accurate.

I do hope this turns out to be true. But we'll never know if NY continues to be stingy with the testing. I have friends who were turned away and told they would not test them after secondary or even primary exposure.

I also read that the mortality is rate higher than they thought, nearing 10% in Italy

I'm sure it's because of the hospital situation, which is so scary. Fortunately, the US does not have universal healthcare, so I assume many won't take up the ICUs out of fear of the hospital bills.

I'm kidding of course, it's sad and scary that many who could be saved may die because they can't afford the life saving healthcare.

Italy also has one of the oldest populations in the world, which is why their death rate is so terrifyingly high.

With the “taking it more seriously”- I don’t think they are reffing to those who are already doing everything they can within reason. I think they’re referring to the people who doing things or going places that aren’t truly a necessity right now.

For example going to the movies isn’t necessary right now. Bringing the kids to a bouncy place isn’t necessary right now.

We have a friend who was really upset that a concert was just cancelled. Friend was literally angry. “If you’re sick stay home don’t ruin it for the rest of us”- meanwhile most people have no symptoms and the numbers of those who are sick with this are so Off for so many reasons. I think this is the type of situation they mean when they say “take this more seriously”

This is what I mean. That and the idiots on FB.

I have been stocking up little by little over the past two weeks. Thank God because today I went just to get a few last minute things and most of the supermarket was cleared out. $hit hit the fan today with the fact that schools will be closed until Easter and some cities are closing pubs. Restaurants are probably next. I think it will be locked down by next week.

anyone else feel a state of emergency will be declared?

Hasn't that already happened? I thought NYS declared a state of emergency. I mean that happens every time it rains too hard, but do you mean nationwide?

Yes they did.
But that's not a bad thing
It frees up funds, it gives states who need it federal aid, etc.
What's bad about that?

I don’t understand why people are telling us to take it more seriously. What am I suppose to do to take this more seriously? Worry, panic, scream and cry of hysteria? Even if I wanted to, which I don’t, that will scare the crap out of my son. I’m the adult and the parent, that’s my job. Why would I cause him fear, stress and panic. Every time I hear take it more serious I ask people what they mean and want they want me to do, and they have no answer.

I always clean my house, wash clothes a lot and take showers daily. I have food in my house, I am not working so don’t have to worry about that aspect, I go workout and do regular errands that aren’t with a massive group. No one in my house is sick, not even an allergy sniffle. I told my DS to use the Purell stations in the building. I’m not going to lock us in the house full time when it’s not warranted.

My husband has to go to work because if he doesn’t he doesn’t get paid. No money, no food, no rent, no apartment. We can’t survive on my unemployment check and with all this chaos who knows when I will be able to get a job now. That good economy with the job surplus is now crumbling. This is what I am worried about.

And yes, I say media hype because I feel they are perpetuating the story to cause panic and hysteria starting from 6 weeks ago. If they reported it better and handled the situation, I wouldn’t have to say there was media hype. Just because I don’t agree or like the inaccurate reports doesn’t mean I don’t think this is a serious virus or threat. But all the other viruses were serious threats as well.

This is how I feel. We have plenty of food and extra "supplies" because we always do. I ran to my local market today just to get eggs/bananas/milk/grapes because I needed those items. the lines were bad and people were wearing gloves and masks.
I'm a bit more worried because DH works in a hospital (in facilities, so not patient facing) so the chance of infection seems higher. I also have a heart condition, so I am worried about how my body would handle it. But, we are in NYC, so schools are not closing. I am working from home and we are doing our normal hand-washing. DH changes his clothes before he leaves work & showers when he comes home. I don't need a 2 year stockpile of toilet paper...do I?

funny thing is-- my mom is a SHOPPER. you name it, she buys it. Clothes, food, wine glasses, blankets, coffee, toilet paper...everything. She was shopping at BJs/Costco every week- it's her and my dad in the house. She realized she had an excessive amount of TP & Paper towels- so she stopped buying it....TWO YEARS AGO and she still has an excessive amount! I told her I don't need to go to Costco- I'll just shop her basement!

I think the people who say others aren't taking it seriously are the ones freaking the EFF out. It's INSANE. I'm a huge germaphobe, always have been. BUT, we always wash our hands, always have alcohol wipes, always keep our hands off our face. This is standard stuff for me. I get other people don't do all that stuff on a normal basis, and maybe that's why they are freaking out?! I've eaten out, many times. My kid goes to gymnastics and school. My autistic son has been going to his programs. I'm going to NYC tomorrow. We take our vitamins, wash our hands, and live our lives. I haven't stockpiled a bunch of crap. I'm not going to fight over TP, and I've been shaking my head in absolute disgust at the behavior of those taking it way too seriously and hoarding all of the stuff.

I also just booked a flight to Puerto Rico today for Spring Break (dirt cheap flights). Living my life until we are told we have to stay locked in our homes.

AND I went to the movies last night. Myself and another person were the only ones there.

That sanitizer isn’t enough as it is only a bacterial sanitizer. Smells nice, though.

It's 67% alcohol. It's enough. Of course washing your hands is better.

I’m not freaking the EFF out. I’m not worried about getting the virus. The Chancellor here already said that 70% of the population here will get it. That doesn’t freak me out. What freaks me out is the effects of how this will all play out in the next couple of months. It’s about social responsibility to me.

I didn’t stockpile. I got enough to live my life for the next few weeks. I am slowly seeing things close down and become unavailable.

You went to the food court. Good luck with that. I work in a restaurant as a side job now and I have in the past for many years. They don’t clean things like you do at home. I’ll spare you the details.

It’s simple. Just stay away from people as much as possible for a few weeks.

OK. I don’t have enough to back up my claim. But I just wash and wash my hands. It’s also important to really rub the sanitizer in. I think there is a time limit.

I know how it works, we use sanitizer a lot when out and can't wash our hands. That's why I bought it. Touch a door knob, no sink, sanitize, etc. Although we are all trained to never touch stuff with bare hands, but it happens!

I completely understand where you are coming from. I’m not one to be overly obsessive about germs. I don’t normally use hand sanitizer and I’m fine with people preparing my food without gloves (they do that here). But for some reason, this time is different— too many unknowns.

I've read over and over that this is not an airborne virus. It's being talked about in a NYC press conference today. They are stressing it's person to person contact. So as much as I can't stand the guy, I don't think standing next to someone for a 10 second photo opp necessarily warrants a test. I'm sure he will be tested today, though after what we saw on TV!

Probably, but I think any smart person would wash their hands in a time like this! So just shaking someone's hand doesn't give you a virus. You would have to touch your mucus membranes
