Corona Virus Spinoff - If you work in NYC/take mass transit

Has your employer responded in any way to the virus yet. My office is rumbling and starting to set up plans. I know offices who have already instated work from home situations. What has everyone elses jobs response been so far?

Our corporate office started work from home today for non-essential employees who can telecommute.

Business as usual.
My boss went in to the NYC office today with a bunch of my team. I wasn't needed there so I"m in the long island office
No one is working from home as of yet

My DH works ON the trains (LIRR) and also commutes by train. He said ridership is definitely down and decreasing more and more every day.

Our NYC office is closed today (and yesterday). Someone in another office on the floor had symptoms so the building shut down the floor to clean. Only some staff members have work from home capability. I have no idea what the plan here is.

My DHs company has WFH capabilities so that’s what they will do.

I work on LI and there is a possible case in my building (not my office). We are given the option to WFH for the week. We all have full home set ups so it’s no different than being in the office.

Corona Virus Spinoff - If you work in NYC/take mass transit

My office is business as usual in NYC (i don't work in that office anymore).
My friend's company held a meeting - she missed it as she wasn't there and someone said they heard her coughing the day before, so she was emailed and told to work from home for the next two weeks.
My DH works in a hospital and they had a confirmed case last week- the drs/staff who came into contact with that person were told to self-quarantine for 14 days- paid since it happened at work. DH doesn't have patient contact, but he's director of facilities, so he is in constant meetings about it--they are deciding what to do. He does take the LIRR, he's just being vigilant about washing hand and not touching things...

Re: Corona Virus Spinoff - If you work in NYC/take mass transit

the parent corporation my company is part of has sent out the generic types of emails saying they're putting plans in place, do what you feel comfortable with etc. They've prohibited travel, our building has asked we limit non-essential visitors, there are purell stations at every elevator bank on each floor.
My actual company addressed this in email this week - basically saying if you feel uncomfortable, don't want to come in etc, then work from home. It's an office that has many people that work remotely anyway and so it won't be that different, just less bodies in the actual office.
I think if things change more, and subways or buildings get shut down.. then we'll all do the best we can from home.
As of now, i can do about 90% of my job remotely so if i have to, i will.
It's advertising.. not brain surgery. We'll figure it out Chat Icon

i'm on the LIRR and crowded subway every day. I can't worry about it too much, i'm vigilant in washing my hands and taking my vitamins. Thats about all i can do right now. BUt i have the luxury of being healthy and not having anyone in the family i see regularly that is immunocompromised.
The subway and LIRR are 'slightly' lighter than usual, but not even to the level of summer ridership or a holiday. So some people are starting to stay home, but for many of us its business as usual.. until it isnt!

That's bullshitt, not for anything.
I coughed the other day because I choked on water that went down the wrong way- should I work from home for 2 weeks?? Should I be put in a quarantine camp?
GTFOH. It's becoming ridiculous- I can't clear my throat without being ostracized?
I'd have taken that right to HR.

Re: Corona Virus Spinoff - If you work in NYC/take mass transit

Funny- I just got this from my boss's boss- our SVP.
This went to all the managers on our team...

All, I have been getting questions from a number of people about working from home. An email was sent last night to all managers and I just wanted to reiterate our policy at this time.

If any employee is asking to work from home, please have them contact HR and a decision will be made on a case by case basis. Please do not tell your entire team or individual employees they can work from home unless it is cleared by HR. I understand people’s concerns and our employees’ health and wellbeing are of the utmost importance to us but there are still many of our employees who have to be in the office, visit customers, etc. and until the CDC or local government officials say differently, people should be able to get to work if there is no cases in the office or location they report to.

Making someone work from home because they coughed?
I just coughed loudly in my office- cleared my throat.
Let's see what happens. Let's see if I get reported.
I think we are getting way too carried away.
And I can assure you my HR would not laugh at me- they aren't letting people work from home yet.
So yeah... they wouldn't laugh if I was told by someone to work from home because I choked on water and coughed. Sounds like discrimination to me. What if I have allergies? Asthma? And they wouldn't be making me work from home because of it.
If anything they'd laugh at the person reporting me for a single cough.
But my company isn't panicking yet- as seen by the email I just posted.
Amazing.

My company is literally built around enabling companies to WFH, yet we are still trudging into the office every day.

I personally WFH 1 day a week and may go up to 2 days/week until this dies down.

But honestly? The trains are empty, and I don't touch anything on the train, so I'm not worried about catching it that way. I think you're more likely to catch it from going to the supermarket than going to work.

I do babysitting for 1 child after school.
So far her parents haven't been told to WFH.
If they do it will suck for me because they wouldn't need me to come in. I'd loose my paycheck.

You might not be sent home if you coughed.
But the poster who just posted it, her company is dealing with this differently *hence the working from home). If that is their company policy to have their employees work from home, HR wouldn't be able to do $hit.

I'm confused. I work from home part time, but if I had to go into the office regularly and they *made* me work from home for coughing I'd be thrilled! Do people really want to go into the office? I mean, unless working from home prevented me from getting my job done I would take that kind of discrimination any day!

I hate working from home.
I get depressed and lonely and get nothing done.
I like being around people and my team.
I enjoy the social interaction of going to lunch, out for drinks after work etc.
I am not one to stay holed up in my house for days on end.
I do it once a week and even that has me wanting to go in on my normal work from home day sometimes.
It's depressing.
One time we had to work from home for about 3 weeks while we were moving to a new office that wasn't ready for us yet. It was horrible. I went stir crazy

Re: Corona Virus Spinoff - If you work in NYC/take mass transit

We had an office wide conference call about it today. So far, nothing. Office will remain open, they even seemed to feel that the office would remain open if there was a confirmed case of one of our employees. They also said that if we are exposed and need to self quarantine or that if our school district closes and we have to stay home we are expected to use our personal time, unless the office does close, which is doubtful. They did suggest anyone who can work from home, should, and urged everyone with access to bring their laptops home with them. They also said that employees who do not have remote access can request it if they need to work from home, but when I asked about it (DD's school is talking about closing next week), they said they'd "review my case." ETA: I would be DELIGHTED to work from home.

All offices are closed and employees are remotely working through at least March 20. All business travel is cancelled, no external meetings without executive leadership team approval.

One time we had to work from home for about 3 weeks while we were moving to a new office that wasn't ready for us yet. It was horrible. I went stir crazy

I would be absolutely thrilled to bits if my office told me to work from home for 2 weeks. Then on my first day back I would make sure I coughed again!

Most of the time I am because I hate people.
But I get sooo bored at home. Especially working.
I need to get out!
I need a reason to shower!
I need to work somewhere other than my bed!
My house is not conducive to working- i have literally nowhere to go.

My friend's company held a meeting - she missed it as she wasn't there and someone said they heard her coughing the day before, so she was emailed and told to work from home for the next two weeks.

What would HR do?
They would've probably laughed considering the entire world, is rapidly shutting down.

Amazing.

And all companies are different.
You might not be sent home if you coughed.
But the poster who just posted it, her company is dealing with this differently *hence the working from home). If that is their company policy to have their employees work from home, HR wouldn't be able to do $hit.

If a company makes you work from home for a single cough- we are all in bigger trouble than a virus.
#paranoia

I'm confused. I work from home part time, but if I had to go into the office regularly and they *made* me work from home for coughing I'd be thrilled! Do people really want to go into the office? I mean, unless working from home prevented me from getting my job done I would take that kind of discrimination any day!

I hate working from home.
I get depressed and lonely and get nothing done.
I like being around people and my team.
I enjoy the social interaction of going to lunch, out for drinks after work etc.
I am not one to stay holed up in my house for days on end.

I like to work from home but only in small doses like 2-3x a week. Unless I was sick I would be annoyed if someone made me stay home for a cough without knowing the facts.

But in all fairness they may have had a conversation with her. Maybe she was sick or had a cold and they discussed it before making the decision.
