The latest is a confirmed case in Suffolk. Male in his 40s was transported from Eastern LI in Greenport and is now at Southampton Hospital. They believe it was “community spread” since he hasn’t traveled. I now believe that this thing has been around awhile but since no one was tested for it there is no data. I remember getting a really bad cold back in December. I thought it was flu but flu was negative. It was awful. I never felt like that it my life. Not even when I had the actual flu. I was prescribed antibiotics but they never worked. I was out of work for 3 days plus the weekend and didn’t feel ok for a good 2 weeks. I wonder now if it was the corona virus that’s going around...

I've wondered this too. A lot of people I know had respiratory infections and pneumonia around that time. I wonder if it's been here all along.

I think you are right. In December my parents were incredibly sick. It took my mom nearly a month to get better. I wonder now if that was the same thing.

They closed an entire district for one staff member that might have been exposed? That is just insanity.

I don’t know the details in this district, but our school district had a meeting last week regarding the potential for closure. From what we heard, the state/CDC are the ones that are supposed to make the call if schools should be closed due to Corona...not the Superintendent. I am a bit surprised by this, but “The governor also said that any school with a positive case of coronavirus will be shuttered for at least 24 hours.”

I guess we shall see!

What is 24 hours going to do?
Unless they mean so they can go in and disinfect.

I’m gonna guess that’s it. To go in and bleach everything. But if 1 kids has it, I’m pretty sure a whole lot will too.

Too bad they don't close school when 25 kids have the flu, or strep, or the stomach virus. This is getting ridiculous now. And I'm a germaphobe. But, we wash our hands and take our vitamins and hope for the best. We were at the new indoor waterpark in NJ yesterday and CV wasn't a single thought of mine at all. I'm living my life. Not sitting home for fear of this

I was at Kalahari this weekend and it was PACKED.. Beyond belief packed. Crowds of people. People eating in the restaurants, all over the arcade, the water park was hopping. I was actually hoping that the fear mongering would keep people away (selfishly) to keep the crowds down. No such luck.
Nobody seemed phased in the least.
Life is short. I won't waste a single minute in a media driven fear.

And that's what it is! Media driven!

We went to the new Dreamworks one at the American Dream mall, and it was so dead. They were wiping down all the handrails, etc. too, which was nice. Hardly anyone in there! It was so great! Pricey, but so great!!!

We're supposed to go to Kalahari Easter weekend and to be honest, I am considering canceling. I am just really torn on if it's worth the risk or not.

I'll let you know if I come down with anything.

There was no way I was cancelling. The kids were way too excited. I don't want them to learn fear.

The waterpark has so much chlorine in it that my lungs were burning from the fumes in the air. Trust me- NOTHING can live in there. NOTHING.

And like I said - the crowds indicated everyone else wasn't too concerned either.

I'm also flying to Florida next month.
No way in fuking hell I'm cancelling that trip either. I've waited too long.
If I'm going to die from this- I'm going to die happy,

If you are immunocompromised, elderly, sickly or pregnant I'd say differently.

Agreed. I feel a lot of it is hyped up by the media to create fear. I went to a hockey game this past weekend and it was packed there. Went to dinner after, packed in the restaurant too. So not everyone is afraid, I guess.

And I love seeing that. We need more of that to be honest. Being there this weekend and seeing business as usual made me feel good about society

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I work on Wall Street. We were just told to WFH for the next few weeks. I'm not sure how I feel about it TBH...I'm glad not to have to jackass it into the city and get up so early but I worry how it will affect the small businesses where I work like the guy on the corner where I get my coffee from, the deli across the street where I get lunch etc.

Already today I noticed the crowd was a lot lighter than normal. If it's going to stop the spread I'm all for a temporary quarantine but I worry that they are hyping this up way more than necessary.

Businesses are definitely suffering. The past week or so I've gotten my Starbucks without having to wait on ANY line and today I went to a diner that is usually packed and there were only like 3 tables occupied. The chinese restaurant by me has seen a marked decline in business too. It's really not fair what this is doing to the economy. I still fail to understand why this is being treated differently than the flu that kills so many people each year. Why aren't we quarantined then? Why don't schools close then? I just don't get it.

My DH works for a large wall st firm and they are taking this very seriously. And he is privy to information that the general public really isn't. For them, it's not media driven, it's driven by global concerns and information learned from global experts and people on the ground in places where numbers are much higher.

Here is the US there is so much talk about "living my life" with little concern for those around us and how our actions can contribute to furthering the spread of the virus to others. Sometimes it's not about just living your life, and you going out and you going on vacation because you don't believe it's serious; sometimes it's about putting your wants aside for the collective good.

Yes you are right. I will cancel my trip. And my life. Hope that helps the spread of the nonsense.
Not sure how global panic will help but ok....yeah .
Stop living your lives everyone. That will definitely help.
Me going to Florida is going to cause a huge spike in infections I am sure.
Let's all panic and damage the economy even more.
Maybe an economic collapse will help matters

ETA...using this logic nobody should travel. Ever. Or go anywhere ever. Or "live their life" as you say, ever. Because you can spread flu. Or stomach bugs. Or a host of other nasty viruses that aren't trending but still make you very sick.

This is my district. I think it was a lot of confusion this morning. The robo call sounded like the superintendent was flustered. I never heard it like that. It was originally reported to us that a spouse of an employee (security guard) in the district tested positive. It ended up the spouse who is still in question did not actually test positive. We are still unclear if that person was even tested at all. They told us they cleaned the schools and busses just Incase. It didn’t seem like many people were upset at all. It’s still cold/flu/stomach virus season, so I’m glad they cleaned everything! And it was the perfect day for the kids to use a snow day Chat Icon business as usual tomorrow!
