Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I agree that people can't stay home from work and school for every sniffle. My kids have gone to school with colds. But, this is different. Coronavirus is now on LI & in NYC, and a few of these cases were community spread, not from travel. Everyone is being urged to stay home if they develop any symptoms, including a cough and sore throat. Children in my class are coming in coughing and sneezing, they are in K, so a lot of them have to be told to stop picking their noses and get a tissue. They cough directly into their hands or into someone's face. We reiterate all day long proper hygiene practices, but these are 5 year olds.
We wash hands before lunch, after recess, after gym class. I no longer allow my students to use the water fountains. But children and teachers still need to stay home if they are sick- given the current health concerns, I do not think it is too much to ask. This thing will spread like wildfire if we don't do everything in our power to contain it.

Anyone watch the 20/20 special about this last night? I am definitely not an alarmist, but when the governor says this is basically the flu on steroids, yeah I am a little worried. I got flu B earlier this year (I had a flu shot) and I can’t remember prior to that last time I got the flu. But this flu knocked on me on my ass. I was out of work almost a week and couldn’t keep anything down to the point the doctor told me one more day if my fever didn’t go down and I didn’t drink I would have to go to hospital for an iv. I am a pretty healthy person so this was just crazy for me. I can’t imagine if Covid-19 is the “flu on steroids”, what the hell that would’ve done to meChat Icon

We took DD to swim class today and there were about half the amount of people as normal. It's usually packed. Anyone else notice places are less crowded?

When I went to kickboxing, there were only 2 kids at the Kung Fu class before mine. My class was packed. My sons school is still holding their dinner event but I wonder how many people will attend since the virus already reached here.

I’m over the conflicting reports and media coverage. One person says it’s like a cold another person is saying you will die and run for the hills.I can’t wait till this literally dies down.

I’m being extra vigilant in my building and using the hand sanitizer they have at the entrance and elevators. It used to be a senior citizen building so we have a lot of older people and I want to be careful for them. I have asthma but I’m really not concerned tbh.

We are business as usual. My daughter told me today that her 5th grade class is watching a documentary on the corona virus on Monday. I guess if he didn't come off as an alarmist I wouldn't mind since I know they have to keep up with current events. I'm going to shoot him an email tomorrow to see what he will be sharing with them.

It's not a documentary, but I know there is a free BrainPop video on coronavirus that is being shared in a bunch of emails I have been getting (I am a teacher). If you google BrainPop coronavirus video it should come up. It was definitely for that age group and I've seen it pop up in educational materials about coronavirus a lot this week.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

My kids school now has a half day this week for the teachers to learn long distance learning so they can prepare to be shut down. I think that will happen sooner than later. While I was at shoprite on Friday this guy was from msnbc asking the coke delivery driver about his stock. He saw me with my normal six waters and asked me if I was stocking up. He seemed disappointed that I said this was my normal water purchase for the week because I don’t care for tap water. There is no toilet paper in the grocery store near me.

I wish. Everywhere I have gone this weekend has been packed beyond belief. I mean, you would never know the black plague and end of the world was coming. Most people don't seem to give a shit to be honest. Which is disappointing because I can't stand crowds and people and was really hoping more people would be hiding in their bunkers with their supply of toilet paper.

I'm in central NJ and both targets I was at had limited stock of toilet paper. I heard one of the employees tell a customer that whatever bleach they just restocked will be gone within 30 min so she better take it now. I havent stocked up on anything. We went out for lunch and the place was pretty busy.

I have no idea. I use my normal Lysol/Clorox wipes. I had bought a pack from Costco before the hysteria in February because that is what I use To clean my house. I have to wonder, do other people just not clean their homes? Yuck.

I would assume diluting it and using it to clean bathrooms and other surfaces? I usually alternate using a disinfectant like Mr. Clean with a more natural cleaner but I've been exclusively using the disinfectant and cleaning more frequently which triggers my eczema so I think I'll be switching to bleach instead. I've also been swapping out hand towels more frequently and I use bleach in the wash with those. Not that I'm stocking up but if my bottle was running low I'd definitely grab one rather than wait until I run out.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I just came back from BJs, Target & Walmart. People were hoarding water and toilet paper...like this one dude in BJs had 2 shopping carts full of toilet paper. Why though? There was no bleach or lystol wipes anywhere....not even a stray random package. Crazy.

The reason people are hoarding carts of toilet paper is because there could be/probably will be a shortage of goods at some point. Making toilet paper rarer and therefore more expensive in the future. Coronavirus is infecting the entire world, and most toilet paper is made in China, where this all originated. They have shut down a lot of factories, quarantined a lot of the workers. So people are worried the stock will decrease and it will be a bigger hassle and madhouse to buy toilet paper later rather than now. Target online was entirely sold out of cleaning gloves, lysol products, clorox products, toilet paper, tissues, hand wipes, purell, hand soap, etc. etc. ENTIRELY sold out on target.com. I couldn't even get the few things I needed for my daily normal shopping. Anyway, this has been and will continue to impact the economy. Macy's has been preparing for a lack of stock so they are keeping a ton of clothing merchandise in stockrooms that normally would be shipped out to other stores like TJMaxx, etc.
So yeah, it is insane this is happening and people are hoarding like this... however... there is some reason and justification for it if you look at it differently.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I use Clorox wipes, Lysol and all cleaning supplies to clean my house. Why are we hoarding this stuff?? So your house is clean, ok great! How does that stop the outside world? Are people going to start wiping down public areas or people with their Clorox wipes? And if you are quarantined or locked down, what are the wipes doing for you? To extra clean the closed area?

If little Bobby entered your house with the virus, the Clorox wipes ain’t helping you.

If I’m going to get the virus it will be from my son, who drags his fingers though all walls, touches everything and is dirty. 10000 packs of wipes and TP ain’t saving me from that sh!t.

See, I just think like "who cares if it's actually coronavirus?" Do they really need to be tested? The treatment is the same as any other virus. Stay hydrated and get rest.

Fom a quantitative standpoint I think it's important to have this statistical data to keep track of how far this thing has spread and to get a more accurate case fatality rate. New strains have mutated now and it's helpful to know which is deadlier and the only way to get that information is to test. I think this information would be helpful to epidemiologists and those working in the medical field. Other countries are giving thousands of tests. Ours is blocking testing and put a gag order on the CDC.

From a statistical standpoint, if the numbers are skewed, it's because there are people with mild cases that aren't getting recorded. The total number of deaths are probably pretty accurate. The death percentage will appear to be higher, but does that really matter? Why are the numbers so important? Does anyone really think it's more important to have the numbers be accurate, than to keep hospital emergency rooms accessible to those who really need it? People that are mildly sick are rushing to the ER to try to get tested. That's ridiculous. The numbers aren't important. People having heart attacks, strokes, breathing complications (you know, real emergencies) those people getting treatment right away is what's important.

If your mildly sick, instead of going out in public to try to get tested... please stay home and get better. Don't infect the public or risking getting hospital workers sick just to find out if you have it. That's nonsense.

Not sure where I said mild cases. I don't seek medical treatment for mild cold symptoms.

Government resources are doled out according to the numbers. Emergency personnel to cover quarantined healthcare workers, personal protective equipment, money- all based on the numbers.

Obviously it’s a problem if everyone who sneezes shows up in the ER. The instructions are to call your healthcare provider and arrange for testing.

Cuomo is asking the CDC to start testing at hospitals. Everyone that's sneezed this week wants a test. Hospitals are already preparing for millions to be hospitalized. I stand by what I said. Getting accurate numbers isn't important. Getting sick people to stay home unless they are in actual need of an emergency room is important.

The latest is a confirmed case in Suffolk. Male in his 40s was transported from Eastern LI in Greenport and is now at Southampton Hospital. They believe it was “community spread” since he hasn’t traveled. I now believe that this thing has been around awhile but since no one was tested for it there is no data. I remember getting a really bad cold back in December. I thought it was flu but flu was negative. It was awful. I never felt like that it my life. Not even when I had the actual flu. I was prescribed antibiotics but they never worked. I was out of work for 3 days plus the weekend and didn’t feel ok for a good 2 weeks. I wonder now if it was the corona virus that’s going around...

They're both important. This isn't an either/or situation.

I’d be interested to know if this is possible. I too was VERY sick in mid/late January with a fever, dry cough that got horrible and I could barely breathe at times had to use a nebulizer. I was on multiple meds that didn’t do anything and saw the doctor three times. It took me three weeks to recover and I didn’t leave my house. They did an. X Ray and said they thought I had slight pneumonia. It was the si clear I’ve ever been. I too didn’t think it was really around but now I wonder if this is possible. A few people when I told them said there was a nasty virus going around - I was also negative e for flu and strep.... very strange...

I wonder if there is a way to see if you’ve had it already? Maybe some antibody in the blood? they should be testing for that too (if it’s an available test)
