My sister’s friend had a cold and went to get tested for coronavirus just in case. Turns out you can only get tested at certain places; your local urgent care, doctor, etc don’t even have the test.

Yes that’s true. You’re supposed to call a certain CDC phone number and they’ll tell you where to go. Urgent Care centers are not equipped with the tests and they probably don’t even want you there anyway.

I also think they don't want to be testing every hypochondriac with a cold. That would overwhelm the system super fast.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

There are people in self-quarantine that are walking around the public. That's why this thing isn't going to go away. The guy in NH was told to stay in isolation, but he felt like going to a party instead. Are they penalizing these people for their negligence?

There are over 2,000 NYers in self-quarantine right now.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I am a teacher in Queens. Teachers at my school are freaking out- the fact is, people do not keep their children home when sick. We have students who have been sick with horrible coughs/runny noses/sneezing for weeks- and they have not missed a single day. Another teacher said that a child in her class came in saying she had a fever last night. When questioned, the mother said "well, it was only 100.4."
That is my biggest concern. Children coming to school with what parents think is a cold, and it ends up being coronavirus.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

A NY reporter tweeted that she just landed in JFK after traveling to Italy's crisis areas to report on coronavirus and nobody from US customs stopped to question her. She just walked right through.

I know someone who returned from MILAN 5 days ago.. She works in a hospital here on LI and went to visit family. She was wearing a mask while on board and when she got off the plane to go through customs, she was told to take off her mask! She said, “um, hi, I just got off the plane from Milan.” He responds, “Hey lady, I don’t care where you came from, take off your mask, NOW”.

I hear you. I know they are talking about the possibility of schools closing, but if that happens, I think it will be when there is already spread in the schools. Luckily the children don't seem to get the virus as bad. But they can spread it to more vulnerable family members.

They are building a contingency plan at my job in case we end up shutting down because of this. Hope it doesn't get to that point though.

My DH has been in meetings for this all week, both in NY and where we are OOS. They are coming up with contingency plans for San Fran, NY, and other offices. He was in NYC this week and a few people in his office building were asked by the health dept to self-quarantine bc of exposure to the Westchester man. He said once that happened the vibe in the office changed and the panic was clear.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

And what's the scam with the testing?? That CA cruise ship couple are so sick the wife passed out and nobody will test them. They keep getting the run around to call 500 different places to find out how to get tested and nobody is giving them a straight up answer. Imagine being so sick and having to keep calling around just to confirm you have this thing. It's sick the way this is being suppressed to keep the numbers low.

I think more people have corona virus than what has been confirmed because it’s unclear how the man in Westchester got it.

Now since he didn’t think he had that - he and his family were out and about and the confirmed cases grew substantially. And those people were out and about before they knew the man had it!

So i think a wide spread outbreak is unavoidable but the metrics don’t seem to be as bad as originally reported. I’m just going to keep on being careful, washing my hands, etc and am continuing to live my life.

Both my job and my kids school are implementing contingency plans and all employees who traveled abroad are ordered to work from home for 2 weeks.

See, I just think like "who cares if it's actually coronavirus?" Do they really need to be tested? The treatment is the same as any other virus. Stay hydrated and get rest.

If I'm terribly sick with a virus, I don't run to the doctor to see if it's the flu. They can't do anything for me if I don't need an antibiotic. The virus just runs it's course and that's it. If you're sick, stay home so you don't infect the public. Does it really matter the exact name of the virus? If it gets bad enough for hospitalization, you go to the ER. No different than any other illness.

I agree with this. If you are having problems breathing or your fever is sky high- it doesn't matter if it's the flu, corona virus or xyz virus- you go the ER.
If not, you ride it out and stay the hell away from other people.

I agree with you 100%.

I was listening to Dr. Oz (I know, I know) on Elvis Duran this morning and he basically was saying that unless your lungs are very bad, you are very old, etc. It only presents like a virus and not always like a bad one

honestly my kids dont stay home when they have colds if they do they will never be in school during the winter!! And then now would spring pretty sure my daughter has allergies is she never supposed to go to school then? I keep my kids home if they have fevers or threw up and wait the proper amount of time before sending them back.

Yes and also a lot of people may have it and not even know it according to this one MD who was on the news yesterday morning. He said in many many people it is so mild you think it's a cold or just some winter flu like bug.
One interesting thing he said was that another good defense is to stay hydrated- both by drinking water but also your nasal passages- so saline spray, humidifiers etc. You want to keep your nasal passages moist because when they are dry, virus and bacteria can enter your system more easily.
So that with the hand washing and wiping down surfaces and that's all you can do

I thought they said the masks don't do anything. And you should only wear it if YOU are sick.

Same. DD has had a minor cold and the cough just lingered for weeks now. She never had a fever or acted sick. She's been in school.
If I kept her home she'd be home for the past month just about and she'd be repeating the 4th grade most likely

exactly want to know what bothers me the most that teachers dont insist that children wash their hands before going to lunch coming back from recces. I always ask my kids did the teachers have you wash your hands ... answer no.

That and the fact at least in my school they dont use strong cleaning products apparently because of fear kids being allergic. so the rooms are never sanitized Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have been drinking so much water lately I actually feel more energized which overall makes me feel better and keeps me from having second thoughts about things.

I use saline sprays at night to help sleep, might have to start doing them in the AM as well and maybe even during the day.

That's ridiculous. They should have a list of approved cleaners that are effective. Hopefully it changes with this virus. I know our school is being sanitized this weekend.

I agree, if I was sick but it was manageable, I would stay home. But I don't need to know whether its corona or something else. It doesn't matter. However, this is why I don't believe the numbers they report - I think a ton more people have it than is reported, but that also means that the deaths are a lower percentage.

Most kids go to school with a cold, maybe not the first day when it's the worst, but colds can last a week so you can't just stay home. I keep my kids home if they have a fever or really feel weak but most colds aren't like that.

To the poster above who commented about schools not requiring kids to wash their hands during the day - this drives me CRAZY! I ask every day "did they tell you to wash hands" and every day both kids say nobody mentioned it. It's infuriating.

I think the best they could hope for is hand sanitizer...if you have 24 kids each washing hands for 20 seconds, that eats up 8 minutes of their lunch period that’s already way too short.
I send a Wet Ones wipe in their lunchbox but who knows if they actually use it.

I think it is important to know. I want to be able to tell people I’ve come into contact with what I could have passed to them. Or when to quarantine. I also want to know what I’m dealing with. It’s crazy to me not to know.

DD and I had the flu this year. We were both tested and told the results including strain. If any of us got really sick again I’d demand to be tested for Coronavirus, too.

As an aside, both flu and Coronavirus are reportable diseases. It is of benefit to all of us for the CDC to be working with accurate data.
