For people who are carrying on like normal, please rethink your choices. We need to “flatten the curve” of this epidemic and the only way to do that is social distancing. We literally do not have enough ventilators for everyone who is going to need one if you don’t.

Not enough ventilators is exactly the problem in Italy right now. The medical staff right now is deciding who can live and die right now. It’s frightening.

nassau county just asked the coliseum to cancel the Jurassic park shows that were scheduled this weekend.
my DD gym pulled them from a cheer comp. My DD is so disappointed it was their first one for them of the season!!
my DH is thrilled cuase he did not want us to go!!

I am sick of hearing the complaining the worrying the hypes, the rumors going around.
I really dont want the mandatory quarantine because that means my DH will not get paid unless he uses hours which he does not have to cover a long period of time so it will hurt us financially!!
How did you hear about Nassau asking to cancel Jurassic world? We have tickets for the 22nd. We aren’t going to go now, but we only get our money back if they cancel. I’ve been hoping for it! We have 10 tickets at over $60 each

even before the governor announced that I caught a live feed on FB that Nassau county was having that said they asked the coliseum to cancel the show starting Thursday night!
not sure how long they asked for it.
Actually i havent even heard if there is an end date to the provision Cummo put out!
On a side note Disney world closed!!!  no one thought that would actually happen  they are closed till march 30th

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I have a funeral service to go to (3 hours away-not in a hot spot) and a wedding on LI- within this coming week.
Both people are close to me.
As of now, I still plan on going to the wedding- and I switch back and forth on the funeral, depending on what hour it is and what news story or conversation I just heard.
I originally couldn't go to the service and the family knew I may not be there. But now I am able to and my conscience bothers me. There will be a memorial service in 6 weeks that I planned to attend. But know who even knows what the future holds for that.
I am so torn.

It’s 100 where I am. I don’t know how they get to that number, but I think it has to do with how much the health system can deal with vs. how much can be spread at one time. They are probably also basing it on the Patient 31 in Korea.

Which is odd because we all know kids aren't exactly hygienic and schools are usually hot beds of sickness.

According to a link I posted earlier, the Italian doctor says that she hasn’t seen kids being affected as much as they expected. The problem is that children are little germ factories and they are carrying it to the elderly relatives.
Apparently Italy has an old population so that’s why their numbers seem to be higher.

It seems that children aren't as affected or as symptomatic as adults. The fear is that they still can get it and bring it home and from what I've read this virus is spread faster, easier, and to more people than the flu. It sounds like a sick person can spread it to 3x as many people as the flu. The fear is that all these people (young and old) needing to be on ventilators at the same time will collapse our healthcare infrastructure, which is what is happening in Italy. The article I posted says the reason social distancing is really important at the onset (like limit all contact) is not because it eliminates spread but it slows it down considerably, giving doctors enough time to treat patients before the next set come in. Most people will be able to get a bed and a ventilator with social distancing. They won't have to turn away sick patients and choose who gets to live and die like in Italy  As of right now medical professionals are expecting to have many more sick patients than they have room, equipment, and capability to treat. Social distancing also buys us some time for a vaccine. It sucks to be shuttered in, but so does an elderly person experiencing respiratory failure and being turned away because she's 70 and left to die or young person with asthma.
There's still so much that is unknown about this virus. We know what to expect each season with the flu. Japan experienced their first patient becoming reinfected

I think coronavirus is a general category of viruses. It's a subset of SARS. Totally don't quote me on that because I could easily be wrong. But I've read articles where this is being called "a coronavirus" as in part of the family of coronaviruses. The technical name is sars-covid-19

Yes, it is. Some types of common colds are coronaviruses. SARS and MERS were coronaviruses.
I’m not an expert but I read up on coronaviruses a few years ago when I had a kitten that died from FIP. Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is present in most cats and can mutate into FIP. If you ever do a stool sample on your cats (I did a few to check my current cats after my kitten died), you will see this in the values.
Coronaviruses are difficult to work with/cure from what I understand. They have been researching FIP for a long time and it goes along very slowly. In my FB group for FIP, I heard they were eventually making headway on a cure.

It's been around since at least early December. I remember hearing about it on talk radio and I remember thinking wow that's a weird name for it. Coronavirus. I'm sure many people have had this and didn't know. And of course they weren't testing so...

Yes you are correct. Coronavirus encompasses other viruses. It is the "main" name if you want to call it that and then the sub virus's go under it.

Maybe if they are sick and have a close family member with a confirmed case, like the original guy from New Rochelle who had kids that tested positive. I think one was 7.
I thought the new Rochelle guy's kids were older like a tennager and 20 year old. But regardless yeah that makes sense.
The kid in the Bronx is 7. It's more rare for a child to have it (2.4% of the infected in China), but that doesn't mean they won't carry it to adults. Especially because kids aren't the most hygienic.
Yeah I know. Kids are always petri dishes.
I assume they do get it- but don't exhibit symptoms or the symptoms are very mild.
My daughter had a cold and lingering cough last month. Not acting sick in any other way though. For all I know she had it. She didn't have a fever though.
I wondered the same thing about DS. He had a dry cough and trouble breathing- had to be put on a nebulizer, but it cleared up. He did have fever as well, but this was like a week before it really broke. We took him to the doctor and they said nothing about it, did no testing. Who knows?!
I feel like this has definitely been around before all the coverage.
Did you ever look at at bottle of Clorox Wipes- one of the virus it says it kills is Coronavirus.
It's been around since at least early December. I remember hearing about it on talk radio and I remember thinking wow that's a weird name for it. Coronavirus. I'm sure many people have had this and didn't know. And of course they weren't testing so...
China said the first patient was identified in mid November, a 55 year old woman, but they don't know how she was infected.

I think the thought is you can spread them out to not be on top of each other.
If I understand correctly you are only allowed to have half your occupancy so if a venue can hold 500 people you are only allowed to have 250. I forgot the max but it might be any venue that can hold 1000+ you can only 500 in there.

Yep, my sister's restaurant can pack in 500-600 iin a busy night. At first they thought they'd have to limit it to 500 but then they were told only 250.

what precautions have your jobs taken?
I work in midtown and my company really hasn't done much.
They have asked if you are sick with a cold do not come in and wfh.
Today because almost 1/2 the office is either out with colds or wfh, we just had a mini meeting and they expect us to be at work as long as we feel healthy.
They said we can work off hours or if we feel the need to wfh we can but in general they expect us in the office. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Isn't better to have your employees healthy and wfh if possible??

I always WFH because my job is located in Virginia but I saw an email go out asking everyone to update if them and their teams can WFH. I assume they are preparing to tell people to just WFH
my moms job mandated everyone has to WFH except essential personnel
