Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I just read a post on Twitter from a Dr in Italy, it was upsetting to read what is happening. The whole country is in quarantine. I hope that our country can learn from these other countries that have already gone through it.

Stonybrook cancelled classes for the rest of the semester!!! It's all online now.

I don't think this is correct. At least not as of right now. Where did you see this information?

It’s beginning after spring break. My bil works there and said the same today.

We have a lot of hospitals on Long Island, more than probably a lot of other areas. I still don’t have faith that they could handle the potential influx of people who would need respirators and ICU care if this is anything like China or Italy. That’s why you quarantine and stagger things- to slow the spread to not overwhelm the system. It’s not like we have a ton of extra medical professionals ready to jump in to relieve those working or those who might get sick.

And if you have any health issues outside of coronavirus, good luck. There were a few articles about patients and others in China who could not get their medical care because hospitals were essentially only caring for virus patients. Who knows how that would go here

Yes, this is the issue. Most people will not die from the illness, but the people who need help will be unable to get it since the hospitals will be overcrowded.

I get concerned about my parents. Both are in their 60s and my mom is a smoker...

This is the issue and reasoning for closures. I have a few people who work in hospitals along the island who are saying the same. Having the hospitals overrun with corona or suspected corona - it leaves the rest of the MP short handed. They are dedicating entire floors and wings to corona/flu. Nurses and drs are in full hazmat when seeing those patients and are cleaned before and after entering into the open areas. Shit. Show.

Slowing the spread is definitely #1 on their list right now

Anyones job putting together action plans? They have cleaning people coming more often and now we each have to work remotely one day a week to help us prepare in the event they have to close the office. People are starting to act a little crazy like they have never worked from home before.

Although this rumor is circulating around the campus, there has been no official confirmation from the president's office or any legit source. I'm not saying it won't happen, but just that it's not officially true yet.

I read an incredibly sobering piece from an Italian ER doctor on the front lines that closed with this provocative statement:

“is panic really worse than neglect and carelessness during an epidemic of this sort?”

I work on Wall Street. We were just told to WFH for the next few weeks. I'm not sure how I feel about it TBH...I'm glad not to have to jackass it into the city and get up so early but I worry how it will affect the small businesses where I work like the guy on the corner where I get my coffee from, the deli across the street where I get lunch etc.

Already today I noticed the crowd was a lot lighter than normal. If it's going to stop the spread I'm all for a temporary quarantine but I worry that they are hyping this up way more than necessary.

My DH works for a large wall st firm and they are taking this very seriously. And he is privy to information that the general public really isn't. For them, it's not media driven, it's driven by global concerns and information learned from global experts and people on the ground in places where numbers are much higher.

Here is the US there is so much talk about "living my life" with little concern for those around us and how our actions can contribute to furthering the spread of the virus to others. Sometimes it's not about just living your life, and you going out and you going on vacation because you don't believe it's serious; sometimes it's about putting your wants aside for the collective good.

Yes you are right. I will cancel my trip. And my life. Hope that helps the spread of the nonsense.
Not sure how global panic will help but ok....yeah .
Stop living your lives everyone. That will definitely help.
Me going to Florida is going to cause a huge spike in infections I am sure.
Let's all panic and damage the economy even more.
Maybe an economic collapse will help matters

ETA...using this logic nobody should travel. Ever. Or go anywhere ever. Or "live their life" as you say, ever. Because you can spread flu. Or stomach bugs. Or a host of other nasty viruses that aren't trending but still make you very sick.

Case in point, your very defensive response to the mere suggestion that people start to do things differently and in consideration of others. And yes, absoultely, you or anyone can cause and be responsible for a spike in infections! That's exactly what happened in the nursing home in Washington and something similar can happen in a church, an office building and a school. Look at Westchester, 1 person was inadvertantly responsible for the infection of many others. The economy has already undergone a correction which was going to happen anyway, but yes, everyone keep traveling and going out and worrying about no one but themselves, potentially spreading the virus because your wants are more important than public health.

Panic IS always the worst thing, ESPECIALLY in a "crisis". It makes people do illogical things. Nothing good comes from panic and I tend to discount any "medical professional" who would suggest such an idea.

And who is condoning neglect and carelessness?

People are merely trying to remind everyone to take sound, but *reasonable* precautions to prevent against a virus that has been here for months already. In addition to this virus, we are surrounded by far more cases of the flu which also poses a risk to all of us (and for this particular flu season especially children). Not to mention the endless variety of new viruses that will be here next year and the year after.

Columbia and most NYC colleges have gone "online" as well. For Stonybrook, I know the students have heavily petitioned for them to cancel classes as well and an inside source said it IS happening.

Doing things differently and considering others is one thing. If I am sick I will absolutely stay home-but I do that anyway.
Upending your whole life when you are fine and healthy and staying in your house with a stock pile of toilet paper and canned goods is another.

I get what you are saying and I can see both points of view on this but the problem is that you are contagious for days before you actually show symptoms so it's inevitable that if you are exposed and coming down with it, you are spreading it unbeknownst to you. Unfortunately I don't think that we can continue to just act as we always do but I also think shutting all these schools and businesses down is crazy.

I am shocked at the mockery being made of people's feelings and their responses to this crisis. Yes, it is a crisis.

My parents are elderly and sorry not sorry but I am very worried about them catching this virus. The limited studies I read show that people over 80 have over a 14 percent fatality rate. People with underlying conditions are also at risk.

Overall, the death rate with the seasonal flu is .1 percent.

There is no vaccine for this novel virus, no one has any pre existing immunity to it, nor do we fully understand it. Those are valid reasons for concern and caution to me. And to the CDC too.

Yeah I don’t get it either. People cast off the elderly and people with underlying conditions as though they somehow don’t matter. But I do hope the cavalier people are right and it’s overblown. I’ve been the subject of mockery among my friends and family because I heeded the early warnings to prudently prepare and now those same people are furious that, in the 11th hour of this thing, after literal weeks of warning, that they couldn’t get bleach wipes at Costco last week.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

What really perplexes me about the whole situation is that this is a virus. It is not killing 50% of those infected. While any loss of life is terrible, the ratio is pretty low and mostly harmful to the elderly or someone with underlining conditions. How is this virus different from anything else that is out there. People die from the flu, people die from strep, people die from pneumonia. The panic that the media has caused in the pubic is what is overwhelming the hospitals and medical professionals. Its is going to spread. That is what viruses do. Cancelling events, guaranteeing cruise ships, cancelling school is just ridiculous. All it takes is one person to start the cycle again. Take precautions that you normally would during illnesses. Am I afraid for my mother who has cancer right now. Yes but I am also concerned for her about getting any virus. We take the precautions we can and still live our lives.

That's my question. Business, schools, and events close for a few weeks until the spread dies down, but as soon as everything opens again, it's going to start all over. We can't stay on permanent lock down until the vaccine is available.

Does anyone know what happens if you get it once - are you more or less likely to get it again? I'm not sure I know how viruses like this work.

Well when you get a vaccine for something they are giving you either a weakened or killed version of the virus so your body will make antibodies for it as if you had it.
So I assume that if you get the actual virus you'll make the antibodies like as if you were vaccinated so you either won't get it again or will get a milder case.

That's a false rumor.

It was someone on the security staff who was possibly exposed.

From their spouse who doesn't have it, correct? There is only 1 person (as far as I know of right now) in Suffolk who has been confirmed so that person would have had to be that persons husband.

There are numerous people who have potentially been exposed. It was a potential exposure, not a potential positive.

The same is going on in my children's school district. There was a potential exposure of a staff member.

There is only 1 confirmed person in Suffolk and 5 in Nassau right now, but there are likely many more. Testing is very limited still.

Molly College is closed the rest of March or later. My sister works there and this is the message they just got.

I’m still wondering what Germany is going to do. I got an email tonight about precautions they are taking at one of the universities I work at. I wish Germany would step it up a notch after seeing what Italy is going through. I’m kind of worried because my mom and sister are coming here next week and my mom is in her 70s.
