Finance spin off

If you live with your SO how do you handle finances? Joint or separate accounts? Do you run purchases past each other?

DH and I have all joint accounts. We each have a credit card or 2 that we had before we were married so those are separate but the resulting bills are paid out of joint money.

I can’t think of anything I would feel inclined to call or text him to tell him about. I mean, I wouldn’t buy a house without his knowledge but other than that we each do our own thing.

Same. We have joint everything except credit cards. He doesn't know what's on mine because he would have a fit if he saw how much money I spent on my boys. LOL

I tell him if I want to make a big purchase but more of as an FYI than a "Can I?" But I don't expect him to ask me either unless its a major purchase. Like the boat he is yearning for. Um..no. Not right now.

Re: Finance spin off

We have two joint accounts in separate banks, this is legacy from when we were dating / living together. He manages one account and i have the other. We separated because it was hard to buy gifts for each other when we were using one account. A few years ago we decided to only have 1 or 2 credit cards and try to pay big purchases with cash only to not go into cc debt like we did before. Anyway if I bought him something special for his bday it was annoying to say don’t look the account and then he would look because he’s like a little kid. We split bills 50/50 when I am working because we make about the same but are in charge of our CC. Now that I am not working he is paying a majority of the bills with his check.

Our savings is joint and we plan how we are going to save monthly etc. we both can access each other account if we wanted to at anytime. I’m actually the primary account holder on all accounts because when we were dating my DH credit was so bad he couldn’t have a bank account.

Dh and I have joint checking and savings. We each have our own credit cards. We dont ask each other about any purchases unless it's something big and not something we buy regularly.

Exactly the same. We do the same with purchases, FYI. My DH would also have a cow if he saw what I spend on my son.

I remember one day my son had a dress down day and it was rare instance where Dh said he could take him to school. Anyway my son came out with a new outfit and boots. I remember DH calling me saying why did his son just “floss” on him this morning with a new outfit and when did he get the boots. I plead the 5th and said, oh he had those for awhile, you didn’t know.Chat Icon

Re: Finance spin off

We only went to joint accounts once we were married. We did not fully live together before marriage, I stayed over only on weekends. Friday to Sunday. I would not join finances until after marriage.

Exactly the same right down to the 2 credit cards I had before we were married that I kept but we pay out of the joint money.
We only run very large purchases past each other. Like I wouldn't buy a $2000 purse ...but I wouldn't do that anyway so....

Re: Finance spin off

We have 2 joint accounts and each have 1 personal. All household bills are paid from our joint checking and both of our paychecks go into that account. We each take a percentage (small) of our checks from our joint and transfer to our personal. And whatever is left is put into savings.

We have one credit card account we call "The house card" and each have our own CC as well. I use my personal card on major make up purchases and gifts for him and I pay for those using my personal account. My DH is probably the coolest when it comes to spending. I have no budget and he (almost) always says yes to large purchases (I say almost because I am still pushing for an extension and porch on the house lol and honestly, if the $ was laying around, he's say go for it) But if this man saw how much 1 trip to Sephora or Ulta costs me, he'd shit Chat Icon The only time I call him before making a purchase using our "House Card" is if it's like $300 or more for something that's probably not even necessary to have but I just want. And he usually says "Why are you calling me, just get it"

My MIL gave me the best advice. She said "Always have your own stash". She worked PT her whole marriage and wouldn't have had an easy out if she needed it, but she kept a stash all of those years that slowly accumulated so she actually could walk if the time came. She advises every woman to have one for that reason. Too many women feel trapped and finances is a big reason... So have your own stash!

Joint everything. It's all one big pot of our money. We sit down and budget a few times a month so we know what we have to spend on. We don't split anything. Big purchases are agreed upon and small purchases we just make as needed/wanted. We combined our finances once we were engaged and started paying for our wedding. We didn't live together before getting married though (we were younger and both lived with our parents)

We are separate everything.

We closed on our house before we got married, and I was still in grad school so wasn't working yet. Accounts were separate, and the mortgage was coming out of Dh's account at the time. When I graduated right before the wedding and got my job, we worked out that he pays the mortgage, taxes and homeowners, and I pay everything else (utilities, groceries, cell phones, car payment, daycare, etc.) I guess we just got used to handling things that way and never made them joint.

I honestly prefer it this way, because if he makes amazon purchases or buys something he wants, I won't see it and won't get angry that he's spending his money on stupid gadgets lol. Same goes for him when I go to TJ Maxx or something and buy clothing that I don't really need. I don't get angry when he spends "his" money because he is going to be responsible to ensure he's not overspending since the mortgage is coming out of his account. I don't want to know every time he's going out to lunch at work and things like that, it would drive me insane.

All money is joint. I have my own Target card and a card I got premarriage. He has one separate card as well. I’m not a crazy spender but will go to stores and buy myself clothes and what not. We always discuss big purchases. I wouldn’t just go out and buy something for a few hundred dollars without running it past him first. I’m not asking permission, but it definitely lets our house run smoother if everyone knows about larger purchases in advance.

Re: Finance spin off

Before we were married everything was separate. He paid some money towards utilities, but since it was my place, I paid the majority. I certainly wouldn't have considered what he was giving me "rent". If it was rent, I wouldn't be able to ask him to leave immediately if it didn't work out lmao. Now that we are married, everything is joint.

We do have some credit cards that aren't joint, but they are paid with the joint account.

We have one joint account for the mortgage. He covers cellphones & cable/internet, I cover LIPA/PSEG. Everything else is separate - no joint credit cards, car payments etc.

We are basically separate. We bought the house before we got married, and I make more $$ than he does - although he has a fantastic pension for when we retire and he carries our benefits.

I pay the mortgage, life insurance, car insurance and groceries out of my account.

He pays all utilities, our vacations, gifts, household improvements, etc., out of his.

We have separate charge accounts except for one. He pays his credit cards and the joint charge. I pay mine. Same with our cars.

Everything is basically joint. I have one side account where I put $100 every week into this checking account which is just spending money basically.

Any large purchases more than a few hundred we usually discuss, though we aren’t big spenders...

We have everything separate. I think the only one who has a problem with that is my mom but its none of her business and i prefer it that way. He has his money and i got mine.

We purchased our house before getting married. We have 1 joint checking account which a portion of each of our paychecks goes & that is where everything house related is paid from - mortgage, oil, electric, water, internet, car lease, car insurance, and groceries.

Separately we have our own checking & savings accounts & credit cards. Gifts, eating out, worked related expenses, vacations all come from our personal accounts.

We plan to keep this same setup after we are married.

We have joint everything, including credit cards. We joined accounts when we got engaged, and it's been like that ever since. We each have one CC that is our own for purchases at Christmas and birthdays, but they still get paid from the joint account.

DH and I have no separate money, everything from bank accounts, to loans to credit cards are in both of our names. We make big financial decisions together but little day to day our purchases we don't need to check in with one another.

Everything we have is joint. Day to day stuff we do not have to run past each other. We have a general rule that anything over $500 has to be oked by the other. With the exception when I refaced our kitchen cabinets while he was on a business trip lol. I got in trouble for that : ). Other than that, we are pretty in sync with purchases.

all of our money is combined, we have separate credit cards, but we have access to each account. everything is shared with one another. we could make our own purchases, but we're not big spenders, so don't have to ask each other about them. when we're looking to purchase something that's more expensive, it is a joint decision.
