babysitting rate question..
Next year, I need someone on M/W/F to grab DD from school. Hours are pretty minimal:
M- 2:30-4:30
W- 2:30-3
F- 2:30-3
the school is around the corner, so no driving or anything. They need to get to my house at 2:30, walk to school by 2:45, and hangout with DD until I get home at 4:30 on Mon, and 3pm on Wed and Fri. Only 3 hours total per week
Is $40 too cheap? Should I offer $50 to whoever does this? $50 comes out to $16/hr, and $40 is $13/hr. It's only 1 child, so I kind of feel like $16/hr is alot.. Be honest!

Are you looking for high school/college student or someone older? I just went through looking for a sitter and to be honest, most won’t take less than 15.

Does the school have after care? I’m not sure anyone would work those hours except maybe a high schooler.

The issue is they can't really do much else for anyone else so it's stopping them from making more $$ so it has to be worth it.

I think $40 is enough, it's 3 hrs. This is not a career this helps someone earn a little spending money.

I'd offer at least 50 just to make it worth it for someone to come. It's not easy to find someone willing to work a few hours a week. We had good luck on care.com

$20 per hour seems to be the going rate in my neighborhood. Occasionally a high school or college kid will charge $15 an hour.

It’s not the minimal hours thats involved here, it’s finding a responsible person to make sure they are available those exact times for an entire school year. $50 is great. Otherwise, is there a friend your child can go with and you can pick them up from wherever they are and throw the parent some $

I think $50 is reasonable, but if the school has aftercare I would personally utilize that instead. This way you don’t have to feel rushed, if you have to stop at the store you can do that, and you know it’s reliable. They usually help them with homework too. My concern would be finding someone reliable for the minimal hours/pay.

Does your school have an aftercare program? That may be your best bet. I find that you have to pay a lot in order to make the minimal hours worth it (I have a similar situation but for the morning)

I also have someone for 2.5 hours a week after school and I pay them $50. The person has to be responsible and honestly I felt like I had to pay well in order to find someone willing to do such small amount of hours.
I also have someone else that comes in the mornings for 1.5 hours three days a week so a total of 4.5 hours and I pay her $100 a week. It's early and I need to know the person will be there everyday and on time - so i pay her well.

This....plus I like the fact that with aftercare you don't have to worry about coverage if the person gets sick, goes on vacation, has an emergency, their car breaks down, etc etc etc

I would sign up for aftercare. $50 for the entire week when they have to carve out those exact times in their day to be home...isn't worth it. At least it wouldn't be to me. I guess it depends on who you are paying.

Not for pre-k, but beginning in kindergarten they will. School ends at 3pm for kindergarten-6th so I am home to get her in time. I only need to hire a sitter for mon and tues after school beginning kindergarten. Next year is just a bit of a mess.

Yes I am also in talks with my neighbor who will be on a child care leave next year with her new baby. I just feel badly working something out with her, when she's also got a baby to worry about. She has been kind enough to offer help and I would pay her although she said it's no big deal. I am just looking around to keep my options open b/c i'm unsure I want to take her up on the offer just yet.

Yeah, the hours are terrible for working parents. I don’t know when these districts will get with the times.
My district has UPK and we spend a fortune to send DD to private pre-k because the hours don’t work for us.

Since there’s no aftercare I would use the neighbor if she is offers, but would surely pay her. She is going to be home with a newborn anyhow and it’s not every day. By the time you child is in kindergarten her baby will be more active and by that time you can utilize the aftercare

Wow. I paid a HS junior $100 a week when my son was in 1st grade to pick him up at 6pm from aftercare and keep him until 7pm or so when I got home.
I even paid her on weeks my ex took my son on Fridays the same amount.
It ended up being $20 a day but it was worth it if I was running late, or there was bad weather and he was happy too because he liked her and her family.

Right but you're talking about 5+ hours and a full 5 days/week schedule. I was talking about only 3 days a week, and 2 of them are only 20-30 mins lol. So if I paid around $50, it is pretty much equivalent to you paying $100 because you're about double the hours

That's funny you say that. I work in tech and when we are trying to find an engineer to take on a job for only a few days a week, we have to pay them more to make it worth their while.
Which our customers just don't seem to understand!

to be honest i have put minimal to no effort into it yet LOL. My MIL offered to help one or twice/week, my mom and dad are gonna help, and my neighbor offered. I am waiting to see if my neighbor's son is in the same session as DD, we find out this month. if they are, im gonna offer my neighbor $$
