Thoughts - Ban on Chap-stick

I've been on a roll with these posts lately, so here is another one - lol

My son came home late last week with severely chapped lips. We have been applying Aquaphor religiously when he is home and they are looking better. He must lick his lips a ton at school.

Today, I sent him in my chap-stick and emailed the teacher to let her know he had it due to his chapped lips and that he should apply it at snack and recess to help clear up his lips/stop them from getting any worse.

This is the response I get: Unfortunately due to chap-stick being considered a "medical" usage, we are not allowed to have it in class or have him apply it.

What?!?!? So I guess the better option is for him to have cracked, dried, bleeding lips. Great!

Chapstick is medical????????
Now I have heard it all.
It's getting out of hand with this nonsense.
I'd send it with him, tell him to keep it on the Down Low have him go to the bathroom and apply it.
Ridiculous.

I will forward the response to the principal and nurse and say my son needs to go to the nurse everyday to apply the chapstick if they want to consider it medical.

I agree with this and I would also let them know how utterly ridiculous this rule is. My son has to carry his chapstick because he also will lick, bite and irritate his lips to death. To the point of looking like he has herpes or Dave Chapelle from his show when he plays the crackhead. It looks so horrible.

Soon they won't allow breathing in schools- because you know oxygen is a medical thing.

Oh give me a flucking break. This school sounds nuts.

I’d give him the chapstick and tell him to put it on when the teacher isn’t looking. What a bunch of lunatics.

The teacher said he can go to the nurse for Vaseline as needed, but it seems so silly to miss instructional time for something like this - 1 second fix. Plus, he is intimidated by his teacher. She is definitely not what you envision for a Kindergarten teacher.

Our school actually just sent out an email asking parents to send Chapstick in our kids' backpacks to prevent them from making frequent trips to the nurse for Vaseline.

I'd call the school and ask what they prefer you to do to help your son out while he's in school all day. There's also a form most schools have that allows for the nurse to provide OTC medications, if that's what Chapstick is considered there.

As an aside, I'd recommend Vaniply. It's SO much better than Aquafor. Look for it on Amazon. It's worth it!

There's going to be 3rd graders in the bathroom...

"Hey... I see your lips are chapped.... I got something for ya... Today, it's free, but tomorrow, I get a juice box from ya...."

Re: Thoughts - Ban on Chap-stick

In all seriousness... what kind of Vaseline do they have in the office and how is this applied? Idk how I feel about a community Vaseline for the entire school. Chat Icon

Yeah that's kind of gross. I would hope though that they have those little individual packets like what comes in a first aid kit or something.

Re: Thoughts - Ban on Chap-stick

It’s a pretty standard rule. I tell my parents to just send it and not tell me. I can’t tell your child not to use something if I don’t know they have it!

I only notified her because she is very, very strict.

He had brought it another time and she told him to put it in his backpack. I figured I’d let her know that I okayed it and that is was needed due to his very chapped lips and not because he wanted it.

It honestly seems silly - even if it is standard. I can understand if a kid is using it all the time but two times in one day - come on.

I teach at a HS. I am giving out tampons every month to students. Tampons are for medical use and I’ve never thought twice about it. No one wants to use the sanitary napkins provided by the school - lol

Great post!

Maaaayyyybbbbeeee it was because it sounded like you wanted her to check that he applied it or to apply it? She maybe didn’t want the responsibility?

Either way... I’d apply in AM and PM and tell kid to apply after lunch without telling teacher

That is so crazy. Put it on him before he leaves for school and throw it in his lunchbox so he can re-apply after he eats. The teacher doesn’t need to know anything.

THIS. I'm sure all of a sudden they will allow it in the classroom for him.

My daughter gets frequent UTI's and she had a teacher that banned water bottles/water from the classroom. You could only drink at lunch or snack, not during academic times. I stated it was a medical necessity and she was allowed it.

Thoughts - Ban on Chap-stick

I agree it is totally silly. Our school a few years ago banned anything that needs to be "put on". No chap stick, no lotion, no sun tan lotion in the late spring. If they use any of that they need to have a doctors note and put it on at the nurse. Ridiculous.

My youngest, 4th grade, has extremely dry skin and needs to put on lotion. I told her to do it in the bathroom because I'm not getting a doctors note for aveeno.
