Driving to Manhattan early Wednesday

I am rethinking the train..... I feel like I will be cold and would prefer to drive in my own car with my own music and temperature controls.

Does anyone know how long it would take to drive into Manhattan on Wednesday morning? I am leaving from Melville area and need to be in NYC by 7:00 am.
Destination is East Side, Murray Hill 34th street.

What time would I need to leave?

If I am bat sh*t crazy for even thinking this, please tell me to just dress warm and get on the train.

Having to be in there at that time you should be ok.

Do you use Waze?
You can do a planned drive and it will tell you the best time to leave. I've known it to be very accurate.

Dress warm and get on the train. And if you want your own music, wear headphones.
Traffic starts crazy early during the week.
I'd rather relax. sleep, read, zone out etc than ever ever sit in traffic.

I say ffff driving! Unless you have to leave to get home at a specific time I’d rather take the train

I think the morning will be fine, but it's the drive home that will be horrible. What time are you leaving Manhattan?

Plus, have you looked into parking? I can't imagine that a parking garage will be cheap.

Just a bit of a guess, but I'd bet you'd be OK to leave by 5-515 (check waze) and get there in time. Do you have a place to park? if not make sure you allow time.
I generally refuse to drive into the city unless its off hours, and really only weekends, it almost never pays from a time or cost perspective.

Re: Driving to Manhattan early Wednesday

I'm probably in the minority but I feel like more people should be using mass transit in general.
I am not a fan of driving into NYC unless it's absolutely necessary.
The trains are easy and convenient in a city like NY.
There are way too many cars clogging up Manhattan.

Are you going to NYU? That affects my response.

Re: Driving to Manhattan early Wednesday

The drive to that part of Manhattan will be much easier than the train. It's a straight shot LIE right through the midtown tunnel and you are there. Minimal driving needed in Manhattan.

If you leave at 5am you should be fine. Probably can get away leaving at 5:15am or 5:30 if you want to cut it close.

Look for early bird parking in Manhattan for a more reasonable fare, although many of the early bird parking specials don't start until 7am.

If you take the train you have to figure out what train to go from (Farmingdale?) You are going to have issues parking at the LIRR train station if you don't have a parking permit. And then when you get to Penn you have to cross town and head all the way east. Driving will be 100x better, even with some traffic. Use Waze.

Agree. I drive into the city on Wednesday's since I have class in Queens after work. The earlier you leave the less traffic there is. If you want to play it safe leave between 5-5:15. Since you're going to 34th street its a straight drive once you're out of the tunnel.

I agree with all of this. I asked about NYU because they have valet right in front of the building so parking is not an issue.

I NEVER voluntarily drive in the city and even I have done this drive many times.

The trains are heated, FYI.

I'd be less worried about driving into Manhattan than going home. You'll get in quickly at such an early hour, but no matter when you leave, you'll be in your car for 2+ hours.

Definitely. Going home would be more of the issue.

That's what I was going to say. The ride home always is a PITA.

I found parking for 21.00 for the entire day. I am not going to NYU, rather the next block over to my daughters apartment.

She got VIP tickets to Kelly/Ryan so we need to leave her place by 7:00 to go uptown.

I will probably be heading home by 2:30/3:00. Hopefully it won't be that awful.

Thank you for your helpful responses!!

Driving home at that hour could easily take hours!!!!

I’d take the train. Parking at Farmingdale at that hour is easy. Grab a meter spot (pay on an app or at the box) and you are good for the day. Trains during rush hr come all the time and there are express ones. It’s an easy walk to Murray Hill area. It’s not that cold this week so it shouldn’t be bad.

I don't think it's going to take hours. Maybe 1:30 or 1:45 tops from that part of Manhattan. There is literally no driving required in Manhattan from there. I don't think people realize how easy it is from there.

I just looked at Waze to get from my job (midtown manhattan) to my house which is about the same distance as Melville would be. Waze says 1:35, and 20 minutes of that is easily in Manhattan as it's usually gridlock by me.

If I had to guess if she left at 330 she would be home before 5.

Re: Driving to Manhattan early Wednesday

My husband does this every day from Huntington - if you need to be there by 7 and park then you need to be on the road no later than 515am and then hope there are no traffic delays. Coming home, it doesn't matter what time you leave NYC - 3, 4, 5....it will take a minimum of 2 hours.

I suppose it could take close to 2 hours to drive home.

But it would take just as long to take the train once you factor walking to Penn and then to your car and then driving home.

Just got home! I left at 5:15 am and it took 40 minutes to get to Murray Hill. I stayed later than planned and left at 7:00 and was home at 8:10. So less than two hours, round trip door to door.

We had VIP passes for Ryan and Kelly and got to meet them, walked an empty High Line, visited the Vessel and had pasta and prosecco at Serafina. Perry much my favorite Wednesday ever.

Thank you for your help navigating this awesome day.

That's good. I figured that much. No idea why people on here were saying "no way" or "train is easier". That part of Manhattan is super easy to get to and even if you leave at peak rush hour time it still won't take "hours" to get there.

I do this drive at least monthly and when I drive to my office in upper midtown I drive right past Murray Hill through the tunnel. I wish my office was in the Murray Hill area, would shave off 20-30 minutes of my commute.

Now if somebody was travelling to the west side of Manhattan (Javits, Hudson Yards, Penn, etc.) then the train might be better.
