Re: Have you ever been fired

i was laid off for the first time at the end of 2018. However it was due to the company downsizing.

It took about 7-8 months for me to get a job and its a contacting position right now. Why so long? not sure I think I am just horrible interviewer lol and also i was told most jobs you get through networking and I am not a great at networking.

I told them I got laid off cause of downsizing

Yes.

To quote my (very esteemed) father, "everyone gets fired at least once"

Have you ever been fired

yes.

i like what straightarrow's dad said... i agree with it. i believe everyone gets fired at least once.

maybe that one time is at a job that doesn't really matter... like a part-time gig when you're a student.

Re: Have you ever been fired

I was laid off twice.
1994 my company was downsizing and I was the junior employee and let go. They eventually went bankrupt.
I was out of work for 3 months before I reached out to my former company's former president. He hired me right away .... then let me go 18 months later because of downsizing yet again.
That company eventually ceased operations in the US.
I've been at my current job since 1995. As much as I dislike it, benefits are really good and I will retire from here in 6 years.

I've been laid off once and was on the verge of being laid off another time. I already had jobs lined up b/c in my industry everyone knows everyone somewhere. The two times, it was the places where I was working, were getting out of the industry.

Re: Have you ever been fired

I was laid off after 15 years at a company. I got another job about a month later. I could have had a job that day as my former employer had set something up but I wanted to be out of NYC

I think there is a difference though between getting laid off and getting fired.
Laid off is easier to explain in an interview.
I think of getting fired as getting fired for cause.

Re: Have you ever been fired

When we interview people, I like the honest answer even if they were fired, not some flowery spin.

Yes, once about ten years ago. A new manager came in and we didn’t see eye to eye. I had been there five years. They wound up going under a few years later. It was a part-time job that I had been at through grad school and while I was subbing full-time.

DH gets let go pretty often because he’s in entertainment and usually is tied to a certain channel or show. So when they are cancelled or downsize the staff is usually cut. Luckily he is behind the scenes and is good at what he does so he usually finds another position quickly.

I was asked to resign in 2017, I said since I didnt want to leave they needed to use those words, you're fired so I can get unemployment. It took me three months to find a new job.
Just say the company was reconstructing and downsizing

I gave two weeks notice at a job when I found a new job. The owner was very upset and made a counter offer - I liked the job (not the owner) so I stayed. Less than two months later (when he had time to hire and train someone) - he fired me. Big learning experience and I was crushed at the time. However, it was the BEST thing that ever happened to me. In my new job for 13 years now. I had been working on Long Island so in interviews, I just said I wanted to work in the city.

sadly a company doesn't need a reason to fire someone or just cause. When I was asked to resign they told me I was a great worker, co works liked me and so did the patients. It was a horrible company with 35 people who had issues some of which are suing the company

I agree. I've only worked at 5 different places, never been fired or laid off.

I should have prob asked the question a little better. I have never been fired or laid off but I always wonder if a person was to actually get fired how would they explain it on future interviews.

I agree, I dont think getting fired and being laid off are the same. You can easily explain being laid off. Dh was the first to get laid off when his company downsized and he didnt get along with his manager. He thinks getting fired is the same.

If you were such a great worker why would they force you to resign. I dont get companies.

Re: Have you ever been fired

three times:
first time due to low enrollment. They gave my classes to an unqualified gym teacher, but he had tenure longer than me so i was out of a job. I was told to look at it as a blessing since I was 7 months pregnant at the time cause now i could stay home and collect unemployment. I did not see it as a blessing. I say it was due to low enrollment. it took me two years to find a new job, but i was not looking very hard due to a newborn.

Second time: the owners felt I was not doing enough. I was the office manager/executive assistant/hr manager/ap-ar manager/bookkeeper. i barely had time to breathe and it was not physically possible for me to do all those jobs. when asked at an interview, i say I did not like the direction my position was going in. I wanted to do HR and I was doing 80% accounting. it took me 3 weeks to find a job.

third time: two months after they switched me to a new department I was told "things aren't flowing as they should" no write-ups, no explanation other than that. I think it's because another person in the department did not like me. i say it was not the right fit for me or the career path i was pursuing. that was over a year ago. Still looking for a job.

Re: Have you ever been fired

Yes. I said something and someone got offended. I won’t go into details, but it was something I said in private to a co-worker and then she told someone (who had a lot of pull) at a moment where it affected him. It was a restaurant job and I had just finished my studies, so it wasn’t a big deal. Well, at the time it sucked, and I could have taken legal action with the way it was done, but I was 22 and didn’t know better.

When I was asked what happened, I just said I quit and wanted something with a different direction. The boss at the new job I got hired a bit strangely, but he was always hiring people from this one restaurant chain because he didn’t have to train them and they worked a certain way, so I was hired right away. It was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was making 3x more and I was a bit more challenged.

The new job eventually found out the reason, and they thought the whole reason was ridiculous.

I pretty much was asked to leave by X date... my supervisors knew I was unhappy with the job (I had asked if I could move to another role within the department that was not so much extensive traveling and long hours) and I guess they wanted someone that would actually want to do the job. I started looking and thankfully found something. I just told the new job when I was looking, that I was looking for a different career path.

This. They are completely different, IMO.

I haven’t been fired or laid off. At least not at this point in my career. I’ve been lucky.

DH has been laid off twice. Once shortly before we got engaged and once when DD was about a year old. The second time he was brought into an office and told he was laid off and then immediately ushered into another office with the offer of a different job. He was very lucky.

********* owner, but this is a risk you take if you give notice and then agree to say. Employer will always see you as looking out for yourself and ready to leave. If you have reason to leave you should just leave. If you want more money then negotiate that in good faith without putting notice in.

This is the type of action that would definitely get me to leave a glassdoor review of the company.

I was no longer a "good fit" for the company. It was BS that is why I made them use the words Your fired, so I can collect

It doesn't really matter what you say in an interview, even if they call your prior employer it is illegal to disparage a former employee. You can only give the dates they worked there.

Not saying anyone should lie...
