Considering moving to Dix Hills, looking for suggestions

Hi everyone,
I just found this forum through family friends. Looks like a great family-friendly site!

We are a family of 3, with a 9 year old son. I work near Flushing, Queens area, and my wife is home maker. We currently live in queens, so my commute is at most 20-30 minutes of driving each way. You can imagine that it will probably take up to 3 times longer to get home if we move to Dix Hills, but I feel like that's a small sacrifice for better education, better living environment and overall upgrade we feel that moving to Dix Hills (or surrounding area) would provide.

By beginning this thread, I am hoping to get some suggestions on some of the areas of Dix Hills, if there are any areas we should avoid, or if certain middle schools are better than others, and if the school bus actually picks kids up from door vs common area for some of the neighborhoods. My son has never taken school bus before, and it will be a totally new experience for everyone. They've been walking to school which was literally behind our house, across the street. We are used to just picking up groceries on demand at an arms length, so that will have to change drastically. (Hopefully we can grow some veggies in our huge backyard in Dix Hills).

I also looked into Commack, but the main reason I liked Dix Hills was that houses were not right next to each other, hilly areas are no problem for me, I actually think it gives character to the neighborhood, and I love the non-cookie cutter houses, they are all different. I don't think I've seen similar areas in Commack. I've been trying to focus on Vanderbild, Half Hallow Road, Wolf Hills, Deforest, and area immediately south of 495.

If any Dix Hills or area residents can chime in it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I am not in Dix Hills but live by Little Shelter in the Elwood District-Old Chester Hills Area (my town is Huntington though). We are on an acre and there are houses for sale around my area with big properties. Also, the Northern State in right down the road from me.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Hi Hanna,
Thanks, that area looks really nice, you mean the area between Elwood Park and Berkeley Jackson park, right? There are really nice homes in that area too, I am trying to stay between Northern State and 495, there are some nice places there too but since I am really far from this area I am not familiar if there are any less desirable areas (for any reason). It really doesn't look like a lot of issues with the area like flooding, etc, since it's elevated. It seems like schools in surrounding area are all good so that's not an issue. We drove through the area today, it surprising to see they didn't clean the streets at all, it was all snow covered, so do you experience any issues in heavy storms with road cleaning? One thing I love is how people don't park on the street, that's one of my biggest pet peeve, having to navigate through parked cars in a narrow street especially when there is another vehicle coming.
