Would you speak up?

Would you speak up?

I started a new job 3 months ago. The team I joined is made up of 4 people, including a manager. The manager will openly discuss how they plan on having "Bob" work on a task. Bob keeps on having excuses as to why they can't so it now gets reassigned to me. By the time it gets reassigned to me it's become urgent so I am coming in earlier and leaving late to get the assignments completed. "Bob" comes works maybe an 8-9 hr day. I am doing 10-12 hr days. Part of me doesn't want to say anything but these hrs aren't what I signed up for. I am also annoyed because I constantly hear about how they plan on assigning Bob these tasks but it ends up on my plate and I feel like because Bob is walking out the door at a normal time is now causing me to being stuck working late.

Bob was also supposed to train me on something and because he never got around to doing it an entire day is wasted of not working on a project and then I am finally trained by someone else and given it with a tight deadline.

I am still fairly new and still learning the processes so its taking me longer to get the assignments done, which is part of my hesitation to speak up.

If you were in my shoes, would you speak up or give it more time to see if it gets better.

I would speak up now, to nip it in the bud.
Otherwise these hours and the timing of the assignments will become the norm.

Is "Bob" an equal to your position ?
What would happen if you refuse an assignment, that you are too "busy" to complete it ?

I would ask for a meeting, and say you are glad to be assigned the work, but would rather have the assignment before it gets to a tight deadline. If you don’t speak up for yourself now it will always happen this way. You might need to find a new job.

I would speak up but wouldn’t discuss Bob. I would keep the conversation focused on your projects/workload and restricted timelines you are being given. They know Bob isn’t doing it and keep rerouting it to you. I would stay away from what’s going on with him and keep it solely on you and how the amount of work being thrown at you can be improved and more structured.

I agree with this.

ITA. I'd just ask if you could be assigned these projects directly in the future so you can work on them without the time crunch.

I don't know if this answer is the popular one, but I'll give it anyway. I think I would be nervous to do something that could be misconstrued as complaining too early on. On the other hand, I wouldn't want this practice to become routine either. Maybe wait a little longer...?

This is the reason why I asked the question. I don't want to make it seem like I am keeping tabs on when people come and go but when I am constantly the last person in the office and I am picking up work because Bob isnt doing it, I have an issue.

It still seems early on and I am hoping things change. I hope it's just because I am new

You have to position the conversation so it seems like your looking in the best interest of the company even though you basically want to look out for yourself. So you want to approach the conversation as if you want to make sure nothing falls through the cracks or potentially gets delayed. It doesn’t matter how much of a rockstar a person is, overloading one employee with multiple high demanding tasks will lead to bad results. Eventually something will get overlooked because at the end of the day we are all human or you can get severely burnt out which is also bad for the company.

Have a list of everything you are working and ask how should these be prioritized and in the future when new things are being added do you reprioritize. Maybe they see you get stuff done, so in the moment the person just assigns it to you without realizing you are working on the 30 other things they asked of you. At the end of the day you are human not a machine. Also reinforce how you have enjoyed working there and how much you learned. You love being a team player but you want to make sure none of your tasks are delayed because of new initiatives that came up. Basically dumping tasks on you on demand is not scalable. Also I had managers where they will reprioritize my projects in their head because the new task is more important but don’t say it out loud.

I think I got a little more insight into what is going on today. Bob has just recently rejoined the team. He has never been in the dept at year end, so has no idea that extra hours are kind of a given and the manager is too nice to say anything. He actually complained tonight about it while we were all there working late. I will let it go for now hoping after this month or two things will level out.
