Enrichment

Hi, I have a former preemie who is really struggling in school. He goes to aftercare, which isn’t really enrichment, and has a tutor twice a week but we aren’t really improving. What are the best afterschool enrichment programs? Kumon, sylvan etc? I’m at a loss.

If e is struggling it sounds more like he needs remediation and not enrichment to help him get back on track. Is he being offered this in school? I would start there and look to see what academic interventions they are doing. I know St. John's had a reading and literacy center - I am not sure where you are located but maybe they can help you with the same type of place at a local University.

Does he get services at school?

If not, get him evaluated.

If he does, request an IEP or 504 meeting and have his services modified.

Thanks for the responses! He is in the ICT. I have had him evaluated and his IQ is average. He has ADD and we are still trying to find the right medication/dose for him. What do you mean by remediation? What else can I do with his IEP? Not sure I understand but appreciate all input! Thank you.

Thanks! Can you give me more info on St Johns?? When I google it, info about their teaching degree programs comes up. Thanks again!

I would def recommend a "comprehensive" eye exam. The doctor will test for visual processing issues, eye tracking, etc. Visual issues (not acuity) mimic ADD/ADHD.

Re: Enrichment

I would look on line for what other kids with ADD receive as services, and ask your district to provide them. My son is dyslexic and I looked up all possible services that anyone listed their kid received. So I asked for them, and the school approved most, and we agreed on why some were not appropriate. But I figured if I asked for more, I would get what he needed. I am happy with my district, but I know that other parents who also have kids with dyslexia in district do not get what my son receives because it might not be appropriate for their child since each child is different and has different needs.

I know 2 different people that used Kumon and were very happy with it. It’s not cheap but my friend’s daughter’s reading level went up 2 levels and she finally feels she can comprehend it.

ICT is pretty intensive so I’m not sure what else the school could add to his IEP.

Enrichment

is he struggling in reading or everything? If reading, ask for a reading evaluation and then from there if he has deficits you can get a targeted reading program for his needs. Is he in Resource room at all or just ICT?
