Dry January / Sober October, etc.

Has anyone done one of these challenges before?

As I get older, I realize the bad effects of alcohol and I have noticed that I feel better if I don’t drink at all. I went a bit crazy during the divorce period and I noticed my drinking went up a lot. I wasn’t really happy with that and I can easily see how alcoholism can set in. It’s too socially acceptable in our society— bad day have a glass of wine, out with co-workers, sure why not, let’s celebrate, etc.

For the past few months, I’ve been moderating and moderating my moderation. It’s been working well and I like the dry days I have been having.

I was thinking of doing this challenge, but damn January is a long month, lol.

Does anyone want to join me? I downloaded the app Try Dry and I’m pretty realistic about the goals I have set. It’s interesting what the UK alcohol units look like. It’s a British app, so the units will be in UK units (Link , but you can use the Standard Drink that they use in the US, which is almost double the UK Link ). It’s interesting to see how much you really are drinking because that “one” glass of wine isn’t really that “one” glass wine size you think.

So let’s try some tracking shall we? Choose your unit of choice.

I'm not a fan of self denial in any form so no, I've never stopped drinking for any set period of time.
I am sure I have gone weeks without drinking, but not on purpose or consciously.

If I felt my drinking was an issue, then that would be different of course.

But when I go out to dinner- which we do every Saturday- I enjoy a nice glass of wine with my meal.
I just don't enjoy sitting there with a good meal and a glass of water.

There have been times I have said- ok let me try not to drink during the week for a bit- or not drink at home- but I always left it flexible for nights out or dinners out.

Yeah, I tried that. But when I looked at the standard drink size, I was really surprised. For example, if I go out here (or even stay in and have a date at home) let’s say two nights a week, and I have two glasses of wine (the norm here would be about 8 ounces), then that goes over a healthy limit in my eyes for me. I know a lot of people that can easily split a bottle of wine a few times a week with dinner, then that’s too much when you think about it.

Yes I agree. The thing is, I have a VERY low tolerance for alcohol. And if I go over my limit- which is 2 glasses of wine (at a restaurant so a restaurant pour, not what I'd pour at home) I get very sick.
On Christmas this year I drank too much for me- which for anyone else probably wouldn't have affected them- and the whole night I was nauseous, dizzy, spins, felt AWFUL.
Finally fell asleep and had an upset stomach all day the next day and was pretty much down for the count.
So I know that I have to keep to my limits to avoid feeling horrific. That really reels me in naturally most times. I just can't hold it and a hang over for me is severe nausea and vomiting which is no fun.
2 glasses of wine is my limit at any one sitting and I know that.
I also try not to drink 2 nights in a row etc.
So I do have my own limits I guess

If that works for you, then go for it.

'too much' is relative. what may be too much for me, might be fine for someone else and vice versa.

Pretty much all this. I love drinking and Im an adult so I can have a few drinks that I enjoy , I don't need to get blasted! The only time I monitor it is when I want to drop a few pounds since alcohol is full of sugar. But to each their own.

Dry January / Sober October, etc.

I do not drink regularly. I can go weeks-months without drinking. The only time I really drink is holidays and when we visit family.

For me if I need to choose between sweets or alcohol, sweets always win.

And vodka, gin, tequila, rum, etc all have 0 sugar and 0 carbs. It's what you mix it with that will kill you with sugar and calories.
A vodka with club soda or rum.and diet coke is actually pretty ok.

I honestly don’t want to do it anymore. I had 2 glasses of white wine at home last night and this morning I felt like I was hit by a truck lol. I don’t recover like I did 8n my 20s, just not worth it...

Same, if I drink five times a year that is a lot. I can have a few glasses the times I do though. I prefer chocolate to wine.

I don't drink pretty much ever anymore. I think in all of 2019 I had 3 drinks. Coming from a family of alcoholics, I see how alcohol is so readily available and "acceptable" in our society. I don't agree with it. But that's my choice. I don't struggle with it at all. And it is not my fear of becoming an alcoholic, it is seeing how it destroys families from the inside out that drives my choices.

I stopped drinking after getting pregnant. I may have 1 drink every few months.
