Where can you exchange US Dollars for foreign money?
Does every bank carry euros and pounds or do you have to go to a special bank?

Where can you exchange US Dollars for foreign money?
I think you have to order it from your bank. You just have to tell them how much you want. I know my mom has done that a few times.

You usually have to order it, but it’s at a cost. You can always try XE.com. They have great rates. I would suggest that you use your debit card overseas. You will get the best rate that way. You need to call your bank, so you can get special approval for it to be used overseas. Call your bank and ask for info.
Too bad I don’t need US dollars at the moment, or I could have done an exchange with you.
You will get the best rate through an ATM card. DO NOT go to those exchange places at the airport. That’s a rip off.
ETA: check out partner banks in Europe and the UK. For example I use Deutsche Bank and they have an agreement with Bank of America, so I always use that when I go to the US. HSBC is great for the UK. Saves a lot of money. Ordering Euros or Pounds through a bank is expensive.

there used to be an Amex exchange place in manhattan i went to years ago on our trip to europe. Dang it..i cant remember where it was. I think it was midtown.

A lot of banks do it. You can search on TDBank for Foreign Currency locations. It's an option in their search. Credit unions will also do it. Call your local branch ahead of time to make sure they do it.

I've gotten Euros from Chase several times. Most recently I got 400 Euros over the summer from them. We didn't have to pay a fee. This was in NYC but you should be able to have them order them for you here or go to a larger branch. Your best bet is to take some Euros with you as backup (or for small shops) and use a credit card without foreign transaction fees while you are there. It is better to use a cc without a fee than to go to the atm while there. Also, when you are making purchases select the local currency not USD. You will get the best exchange rate that way.
Oh and don't forget to call your banks and tell them you are traveling.

I believe AAA also exchanges. Don't know if you need to be a member or not.

Thanks for all the info! My SD is studying abroad and I know she needs money so, rather than buying her crap she doesn't need, I was going to exchange money and put in boxes for her under the tree.

Oh in that case, just exchange it through XE.com when she gets her bank account in the UK. You said she was going to London, right? Print out a fake pic of the pound note and say this certificate is good for X about of pounds when you get there.
She should be able to use her debit card when she goes to the continent, so no need to send her euros. Keep an eye on the exchange rates for the pound right now. They are in the middle of a really big election and the whole Brexit process, so the currency is fluctuating a lot.
