Sensory seeking help
DS is in 2nd grade and receives speech and also uses an FM unit in class for an auditory processing disorder. I suspect there is a touch of Inattentive ADHD also but we just started using the FM system 3 weeks ago and would like to address that before addressing ADHD.
Anyway, his teachers have said he is always picking at an eraser under his desk, or picking at his fingers, or picking at his name card that’s taped to his desk. This sounds like sensory seeking behavior to me. She told me that she gave his once a clothespin to hold and it worked for a little until he started checking it out and seeing how it opens and closes.
Any suggestions on what he can use to help keep his focus? He picks at his hands so much that I feel like they will bleed one day. I’m wondering if a small squeeze ball for him to hold will help. Thanks for any suggestions!

Sensory seeking help
She if the teacher will allow him to chew gum. That may help. Also, look into craniosacral therapy.

An OT should be able to help with this. But yes, definitely sounds sensory seeking. Squeeze ball should help. There are also bands they put around desk legs which gives kids sensory input (they can kick them). They have pencil toppers for this type of stuff too.

An OT should be able to help with this. But yes, definitely sounds sensory seeking. Squeeze ball should help. There are also bands they put around desk legs which gives kids sensory input (they can kick them). They have pencil toppers for this type of stuff too.
Do you know the name of the bands that go around the desk legs?
He was tested for OT last year and didn’t qualify, the OT said he could use some help with handwriting but she didn’t want him to miss out on class time to work on handwriting. I’m hoping something else can help in the meantime.

Bouncy bands or kick bands. There are also things to attach to zippers (for a hoodie, etc.) to allow to kids to fidget with that as well.
