Question for teachers
DD has conjunctivitis and I was wondering if it were reasonable to ask the teacher to wipe down DD desk with Clorox wipes I provide when she returns to school. DD is 6 so she really can’t do a good job herself. Is this was too janitorial for me to ask, like cleaning a toilet or something?? I don’t want DD or the other kids getting reinfected.

I'm a teacher and I am going to be honest and say I do not have a ton of time to be wiping down each student's desk regularly.

I am not a teacher, but wouldn't expect the teachers to wipe down every student's desk. I do know that Fridays the teachers have them do a big clean up and wipe down desks and neaten their cubbies, etc.
I think also when someone is sick the teachers have the kids wipe down their desks.
I tell my boys to wash their hands as often as they could and use the disinfectant that's in their backpacks. When they come home I have them wash their hands immediately and I wipe down their backpacks and jackets or spray with Lysol.
I won't let them go on their beds either in school clothes.
I know it stinks. Especially when going back to school after being out ill. Try your best to work with her on cleaning and send her in with her own wipes or lotion. There's only so much you can do and kids are just gross. LOL

I think people may be misunderstanding what you are asking.
Are you saying you just want the teacher to wipe her desk really quick before she returns so she doesn't recontaminate herself?
If so, I don' t see that being a huge issue.
I didn't take it as you wanted the teacher to wipe her desk on a regular basis or wipe ALL the students' desks.... right?

I've been told that teachers can't even use Clorox wipes to wipe down the desks, due to the Hazard materials bullcrap. So, I would just send a pack with your daughter, and have her do it herself. The Clorox peroxide wipes kill everything, they are great for stomach virus also. I get those on Amazon.

Yes, I was intending to ask for just a one time deal to wipe her desk after a nasty case of pink eye. I don’t have to send Clorox wipes if that’s not allowed, I could send antibacterial wipes(which the teachers ask for all the time).

This. It’s ridiculous but it’s true. We have this foul smelling concoction that is supposedly allergen free. Not sure what it is, but it doesn’t do a great job cleaning anything.

Really? It’s something that would take 2 secs to do. I don’t see a problem with it. I’d be the teacher that wipes down desks each week. Maybe bc I have a daughter who has continually gotten sick in the past so I get how important it is. My daughters teacher has the kids use Clorox wipes on their desks a few times each month. I’ve also seen her teacher using them on the kids desks too. I’m in N.C. so I’m happy to see teachers here able to use them.

Really? It’s something that would take 2 secs to do. I don’t see a problem with it. I’d be the teacher that wipes down desks each week. I see your point, but I still don’t think it’s reasonable. I just typed out a way too long explanation of why, but I realized that unless you’re a teacher it’s just not going to make sense.

As a teacher I would absolutely do this! Actually, I would be scrubbing the entire classroom after a kid had this. I do try to give my classroom a good cleaning once in a while though.
Pink eye is SO contagious!!! I'd fear that the rest of the class would get it too.

Question for teachers
I'm not a teacher but I don't think it would be a big deal. If you're uncomfortable asking, is there any way you could go up to the school either after school the day before she goes back or bring DD to class her first day back and wipe it down for her?

Yeah, I would totally ask the teacher to do that on a very contagious illness like Pink Eye. Likely would not be sending a request like that for a cold or whatever. I'm not a teacher, but I would think that if I had a kid out for pink eye I'd be wiping down their desk without asking just so I don't catch it.
As for the teacher who thinks its unreasonable, i really don't understand where you're coming from. Its 1 desk for a kid with a highly contagious illness. If you don't think thats reasonable, I'd assume you're OK with getting it yourself.

I started typing this out myself but stopped.
I was thinking- even for PURELY SELFISH reasons I would take the 2 seconds and do it. Probably the second I found out the child was out with pink eye.
I get pink eye a lot and always terrible cases that lasts for weeks.
I'd be all over that before the parent even asked me.
I mean, I'd stay a minute late and do it if I had not one second at all during the day to wipe a desk.
And if there is some underlying reason why this cannot be done that is too over our heads to understand because we aren't teachers then it's no wonder these schools are a hot bed of disease and illness and shit runs rampant through the schools.

Totally reasonable, and I think the teacher would appreciate you bringing it to her attention.
I get that teachers have a tough job, but wiping a desk here and there when a child is sick, shouldn’t make or break your teaching routine.

I’m not trying to  , but during the winter when more people are sick and flu is going around I do take the time to briefly wipe down the computers and desks before work starts(shared, about 12-15 computers) and it takes a few minutes a most. I probably do it weekly and other people sometimes do it during the week also. So I don’t actually see how it’s a big deal to wipe a desk here and there when there is a highly contagious or virulent illneSs(such as gastroenteritis, pink eye, flu). I would never expect that for a cold or random fever but sometimes it’s really the best for everyone’s protection to do a quick wipe down for human to human sake, not specifically a “teacher” thing. I get if it’s too busy and you can’t get to it all the time but to say you can never ever do it seems extreme and confusing to me. I do get you wouldn’t want extra responsibilities heaped like every parent “expecting” this to happen, but off the record I would probably do it anyways(and tell parents we can’t always do it).

Aren’t you concerned with your own health and the health of the other students? I teach older kids but I tell my students that my classroom is our home away from home and we should take care of it like we all live there. I’d do anything to prevent getting pink eye.

I teach kindergarten. I use lysol wipes
Constantly to clean tables. If I dont no one will. It doesn't take 5 seconds like someone above said. The wipes
Are black after cleaning one desk, it needs to be done often The kids are not allowed to use it, so they use baby wipes to just keep it clean after eating and projects.
To original poster. I think you are fine. Just let the teacher know she had Bad pink eye and to just wipe her desk well so not to spread it again.
