$$$ GIFT

BIL had a “surprise” wedding... they went on vacation, came back & showed us a video with scenes from the trip and at the end it said “... and we got married!”
We are so happy for them!!! They’re a great couple. Also happy they did it exactly the way they wanted. They’re also expecting a baby next year.

We want to give them a gift from our family... What amount would you give your brother or sister as a wedding present?? (He is the first and likely only of our siblings to get married, so I really have no idea what the norm is now, but we’d like to be generous.)

Re: $$$ GIFT

It really depends on your financial situation- truthfully I could see giving anywhere from like $500- 5K depending on your situation.

Can you please adopt me??Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was going to say like $200 Chat Icon - but I guess it depends on what my siblings situation was and mine. Maybe I would get the a little trip or buy something meaningful.

Re: $$$ GIFT

at this very moment, if someone that near and dear to me got married this way i can comfortably gift them $1k.

considering i didn't have all of the traditional wedding guest (possibly wedding party) expenses, i would feel comfortable with that amount.

then i might join in with parents to plan a very small reception to toast the happy couple.

$$$ GIFT

For siblings, we give $500. I honestly can't imagine giving $1,000 for a wedding unless it was my own child.

We are notorious over gifters (thanks to DH) and yeah even I think that's over the top

However I think the person who posted that had prefaced it by saying- it can be a huge range based on your situation. So I take that as if you are very wealthy and have a close relationship with the brother, then yes, maybe $5k to you is like $500 to us.

I think if you can afford this amount it's a very generous gift.

If I could afford to give $5K to one of my siblings for their wedding I absolutely would..I can't ATM but if I could I would.

They just saved you hundreds in tux rental, dress purchase and bridal shower gifts you would have shelled out.
I think that's the perfect amount.

Actually, I kind of think you would give less based on that reasoning. Yes, when you go to a bridal shower and wedding, you bring a gift and you have to get a dress, etc. But, it's a social event and you get to have a nice time. So your costs associated with it are part of the cost of going out. It kind of annoys me to give the same gift and not even get to go to the party. Just a different perspective.
