Work related question- RE time off
So, Ive been at my job for 8 years. VERY rarely call in sick. My sister is getting married in December and I just asked my boss if I was able to leave early the day before for the rehearsal. It would only be about 2 hours early. Her response to me was "we'll see". I know she most likely will let me go, but wtaf is that?! I kinda feel like it shouldn't be a question. Shes known about this wedding for over 2 years now... Am I wrong?!

I don’t think you are wrong at all. But I guess it also depends on the culture and how formal / old school your company and team is. At my job that would be more of someone telling their boss.. so you know I’m leaving early. Not a request.
Sorry, but that sucks. Especially since you been there for so long and this is an engagement 2yrs in the making, plus it’s 2hrs. I would’ve told my employee to take the day off, it’s your sister.

Yeah, that's wrong what your boss did. I just would have said "I have to leave early on December 1st." It wouldn't have been a question, but a notification.
But, since I work for a public agency, I'd have to take 2 hours of Vacation Time. So, it's not like I'm getting time off for free.

Ugh yeah agree with above that it really depends on the culture. In my department my boss thankfully is flexible and something like this wouldn't be a problem as long as I give a heads up.... but in other departments I know they are more strict.

It definately a work place related thing. My husband and I work for the same company. We met here. So when we got married, it was obvious we would both be taking time off. Our wedding was planned for October. Well company policy is that no one is allowed to take vacations from labor day through Christmas. And my boss (the owner) politely pointed that out to me as we were planning. And I turned to him and said I am not rescheduling my wedding based on your vacation policy. He was kidding, of course, but it was technically the company policy. We both got the week of our wedding off and a month later the boss gave us 2 weeks off and paid for our honeymoon. ironically the following Sept, we both took off for the birth of our son. Again, not something we could reschedule.

That wouldn’t fly in my company culture. I also don’t micro manage my team. Sometimes we take calls at 6 am or 10 pm, so if they leave early one day who cares. I just expect flexibility to go both ways - and don’t take advantage of me.
I’m super lucky my job is so flexible and don’t think I could work somewhere that wasn’t.
Honestly, this is a power/ego move. Unless there’s some major important meeting or other deadline, why would a manager even act like this. All it does is demotivate employees. This is a command and control style that went out in the 80s. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Do you have a good relationship with her? I mean what warrants that type of response? Unless you guys are super busy in December? LOL
I have learned, however, that I do not ask anymore. It took some training on my part; LOL, but I don't ask.......I tell.

Uhh. I wouldn't have asked. I would have said I need to leave 2 hours early on this date. Other option is to request the 2 hours off formally.

My boss was like that last year and would make you formally take the time off. Even if it was just a few minutes. The problem with my job is that you can not take time hourly so you need to take a half day even if you just need to leave 10 minutes early. It’s very frustrating.

This is how my last boss was and the above is exactly what he hot from me.
In my new position, it's 180° different on both sides.
Now, as far as my company... I would take 2 hours PTO.
Sorry your boss is a bit of a jerk.

I'm not sure what line of work you're in, but I've learned to "tell" and not "ask." So I would have said, "My sister is getting married on XXX so I will be leaving 2 hours early that day."
If it's an issue, just use a half day PTO. It's not worth the stress.

I would have said I needed to leave and I would make up the hours by skipping lunch, coming in early/staying late another day.

this is the right answer. You're not asking hey, can I leave on a friday a bit early to get out to happy hour. you have a planned event many days in the future.
You can say to your boss
"Just to clarify I need to leave at X time on X day for the wedding. Do you want me to take a half day for that? or can I just come in a little early and work through lunch?"

TBH in December or two week before, I would just remind her. I would probably do a week before but I am ok with saying "Don't forget I WILL be leaving early next week Friday at [insert time] and its in my calendar".. Deuces, peace out 
I wouldn't keep reminding her and giving her time to think about it, based off here original response.

Are you hourly or salaried? My team is salaried and I wouldn’t even think twice about giving someone time off for an event that I knew about far in advance. They put in more than a 40 hour week so it works itself out. Even hourly people who have appointments can make up time that week by coming in early and/or staying late. I think as long as it’s not abused, flexibility generally leads to happier and more productive employees.

It's a ridiculous response. Though I do understand why you ask and not just say "I'm leaving early".
For my job, I can work through lunch and leave an hour early if I get the okay beforehand, so that's an ask. But I can't just leave 2 hours early without using vacation time, so I would just schedule that.
ETA: And now I would take the whole damn day off.

I'm "salaried" and I use quotes because if I work OT then I'm salary, but if I'm under 40 I get docked 
It is a busier time of month for us, but this is really driving me nuts.
I appreciate everyone's responses in making me feel less crazy for being pissed lol
