Slow leak in walls from roof vent

I had water dripping from my 1st floor kitchen ceiling. We think its coming from the roof vent. I have a two story house. I see newly painted upstairs bedroom wall, paint is coming off near where it probably traveled. I am terrified we have mold now. How on earth do I find this out? It seems to be traveling from roof, down walls of upstairs bedroom and into first floor ceiling. Noticed a tiny bit of water dripping last night after rain. We always had a problem there and thought it was the pipe and it was fixed. This may have been going on for years

Re: Slow leak in walls from roof vent

The first thing I would do is get a roofer in there to fix it. Then I would call a general Contractor to check out the walls. They will have to rip part down to get behind it to see if there is any mold or a lot of water damage. A GC can replace studs and sheetrock if needed

But that roof has to be fixed first before I'd get anyone in for the walls

Agree that first you need to have the leak fixed.

But if you're worried about mold, you really need to have mold testing done. They take air samples, samples from carpet or other upholstery, etc. and have it tested. If you do have mold, you need to have it remediated before you call a general contractor for the repairs.

We had mold in our house last year so I'm very familiar with the process and can make recommendations on who to call, if you're interested. But again, your first step has to be finding the source of the water and repairing that. Otherwise, you will just spend a fortune cleaning and repairing to have the problems return.

Sometimes it's the type of rain you get (or direction) that will cause these leaks. In my case, I waited about a year after the roof repair, before I did interior sheet rock work and painting, just to make sure they got it.
About 3 years after that, during a horrific storm where the rain blew horizontally from the east, (much like the one that originally sprung the leak) the ceiling started leaking in the same spot. I wonder if it was ever truly fixed. Good luck. Water leaks are difficult.

Thank you for the responses. We pretty much figured out we believe it is coming from the roof vent, as it is wet up there in the attic where the vent is. We will call someone today. Trying to find a reputable place. Can anyone recommend someone? I had another leak last year somewhere else and had many roof companies come for estimates and really didn't care for most of those that came.

Are your gutters clogged?

I dont think so. I had them cleaned out last year and checked. I think its the covering that goes over roof vent as its wet in attic where it comes in.

For roof repairs, I highly recommend John Goess Roofing (516-541-4597). He was very reputable, gave a fair price, did a great job, and was very honest (he returned money to me after the job when they did not need to use the new attic fan he originally was going to install).

Thank you. I believe I came up with his name last year with another leak I had and was told he didn't come in my area.

It’s not likely you will have mold if it wasn’t leaking for very long. Have a roofer come repair and ask them to look around to see if there are any signs of mildew. They can look around inside the attic...
