Drive or Train - what would you do?

I have to travel to Albany for work a few times a year and almost always take Amtrak - it's easy and relaxing, compared to worrying about traffic etc.

Now I have to go to Saratoga in a couple of weeks, also for work (mid-week). Taking Amtrak for this trip would get me in to Saratoga at about 6pm, the night before I have to be there, which is fine - I can get there, get dinner etc (the conference starts at 8:30am the next day). But, the day I leave, the conference ends around 1pm and the Amtrak train doesn't leave until 4:45 - and gets into Penn at 8:50. Then I have to travel home on the LIRR, so I wouldn't get home (in my door) until about 11pm. But, with the train, there is no traffic to worry about and I can read, sleep, work etc

Because of the train schedule to come home, I'm thinking about driving - but not sure if it's worth it. It's about a 4 hour drive from where I am. If I drive, I still have to go up the night before the conference and would leave before rush hour, so would probably get there around the same time. But on the way home, I could leave right after the conference - but will probably hit serious traffic on the way home (but would still probably get home by 6-7 pm at the latest, hopefully!)

(I won't need my car while I'm there - can Uber if I need to get anywhere other than the hotel)

What would you do - train or drive?

Re: Drive or Train - what would you do?

I hate driving and it gives me major anxiety especially on a long trip like that. So I vote train.
I would go out of my way and get home late or leave early or whatever it took to take the train.
But that's just me.

Also- traffic into and out of the city and long island is such an incredible nightmare so there's that.

In those circumstances I would probably take the train. Is there anything you can do in saratoga to kill that time in between conference ending and train departing?

Yes, as long as the weather is nice, there is a cute little town to walk around, have lunch etc.

And glad to see everyone (so far) saying train - that's what I was leaning towards, but a friend I was talking to thought it was crazy to take the train, so I started second guessing

I would drive. The drive up there isn't bad. It's a few hours, and the only traffic would be your normal getting on and off the island traffic, and if you're going during the week it won't be too bad. I'd rather driver on my timeline, then be forced to wait around for the train and waste that time. I'd rather sit in traffic and be home by 7pm, then wait around and get home at 11pm. Also, if you're not in a rush driving there or back there a lots of nice towns and places to stop on the way.

The train when it works well is very nice and relaxing, but if it's delayed or anything, it can be a huge pain. I've gotten stuck for hours on Amtrak trains when there is an issue. I'd hate to wait around until 4:45pm to then be delayed.

I hate driving in places I'm not familiar with so I would take the train. But someone like my DH would prefer to drive just to get out of there and get home quicker.

I would kill for a few mindless hours alone on a train.

Re: Drive or Train - what would you do?

Its not a guarantee but I would put the info into google maps around the time you would be leaving and see how long the anticipated drive home would be.

I drive a lot and wouldn't think twice about just driving.

Me, too. The anxiety of waiting would give me major anxiety, but that is a trigger of mine. I would need a perfect train connection or something definite to do in between. I also get anxiety driving in unfamiliar places, but the waiting is worse.

I would drive but it seems this is your normal routine and you enjoy it. I have always found its best to go with your first instinct. Take the train and enjoy your free time.

Normally I would say drive, but because the conference doesn't end until 1pm... I say train.
You'll probably get down state right in time for rush hour and it can take a good 45min-1hr to even get over the bridges. You wouldn't be saving too much time by driving.

Drive or Train - what would you do?

What dates/days are you traveling?

When would you be leaving to come to Saratoga?

If you leave Saratoga right at 1, you should be okay and not get stuck in bridge traffic. You will get stuck in traffic once you get to LI regardless of when you leave.

I live near Saratoga and travel to LI to visit family once a month. If I time it properly I can make it from Eastern LI to my house outside of Schenectady in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The train to Saratoga has a “layover” in Rensselaer which has you sitting there sometimes for 30 minutes.

I know there the layover in Rensselaer because that's where I usually get off the train. And I live in mid-Suffolk county, so it'll be at least 30-40 minutes further than Levittown (without too much traffic). I'll be heading up on Tuesday, 1022 and home on 10/24 - a Thursday

Drive or Train - what would you do?

Saratoga is a great town and so easy to kill a couple hours, personally I would drive bc I like to be in control and able to come and go on my schedule but it sounds like you prefer the train so I would stick to that plan
