is it ok for a 3rd grader....
Would you be ok if your 3rd grader let himself into the house and was alone for maximum 15 minutes until you came home from work?

Not third, sixth, yes. I would be ok with leaving a fifth grader home for 10 minutes, but not to let themselves in alone.

Nope.
Dh once left my 4th grader home for like 20 min when he ran to a store but I wasn't even thrilled with that to be honest.

I think the issue too is when you say- let themselves in- that implies they are getting off the bus, walking from the bus stop, entering the house with a key.
God forbid some crazy saw them walking alone and followed them, etc.
No effing way.
Not in 3rd grade.
That's a lot different then leaving them in the house for 15 min or so to run out real quick IMO

Not my 3rd grader because he is ASD and requires a lot of support. But there are many times that I wish I could.
I was walking home alone in 1st grade and letting myself in the house. And I know I will be met with a barrage of "but times were different then". And on that I disagree. I think there are just as many crazies now as there were 30-40 years ago. The difference is that with the internet and social media, we are more apt to hear about them now than we did in the past.
But that's just my opinion.

No. I have a 3rd grader and there is no way I would let my 8 year old let herself into the house and be alone for any amount of time.
**Maybe** when she is in 6th grade but my district still overs aftercare through 6th and late buses so I may not have to even consider this until she is in 7th grade.

I think it depends on your kid.
If YOU feel they are ok to do it, then maybe they are. Also, at this time when I was in third grade, I was 7. My son was 8.5 when he was in third grade at this time of the year. That makes a difference as well (my Nov. birthday vs. my son's April).
My son started to stay home the summer before 6th grade. He's fine with it. We live in NYC and they have aftercare for free through 8th grade. But he hated it and I know he can handle it
I will also say, I stayed home for the exact amount of time with my younger sister in the 80's. And I don't think things have changed, people are just more aware now.
If you think they're ready, try it.

If I absolutely needed to run out for 20 minutes or less I would feel comfortable leaving my son, he is bright and responsible and I know he would be fine--I have not done this and would not unless there was some crazy emergency. I would not be comfortable having him let himself in and honestly in either scenario I think he would be scared and not want to do either. He is 8, at 10 I can see both him and I being comfortable with doing this.

Yes he was- at Sears. My point was, bad stuff definitely happened when we were kids- back in the 80s etc- it wasn't any safer back then, than it is now.

Pet peeve is when people reference the current time like it is worse, social media makes us more aware but it was just as dangerous and in the case of NYC MORE dangerous when I was growing up

I remember that whole story and the movie. Scared the cr*p out of me and pretty much everyone in America at the time. We used to be able to do anything then and not check in, but that movie definitely shed some light on the truth.
I had to go back and read the story about him.
I remember we all used to be afraid of the "blue van" or something crazy like that.
Anyway, to answer the OP's question. No, I don't. I have a 5th and 3rd grader and still don't trust them or trust any crazies. I just started letting my 5th grader ride his bike around the block, which is a big circle.

Yeah I just read the story again on Wikipedia. Horrifying.
The mom left him at an Atari display while she went to go look at a lamp.While she was gone the older boys there were scuffling over who's turn it was and the security guard asked if there parents were there- they said no and he assumed Adam was with them because he never spoke up. He threw them all out of the store and that is where Adam was taken by some nut job in a van.
He was only 6.
I'm probably a psycho, but I don't let my DD out of my site ever. And she's 9. My anxiety is just too high though.
