DS just started at a new preschool- he does 3 days a week half days and has been there 5 times so far. DS for the most part is potty trained with the exception of pooping on the potty, it’s a struggle but we’re working on it. Yesterday, I went to pick him up and he said “Mommy, my underwear are wet. I have to pee”. So I assumed he went during the class and dribbled a little pee on his underwear. We went into the bathroom, he peed, pulled his pants up all on his own and didn’t need my help. When we got to car and I put him in his seat his shorts were soaked. He then told me he peed his pants while in class but didn’t tell his teacher. He had black shorts on so you really couldn’t tell at all (I had no idea until I was buckling him into his seat) so I don’t blame the teacher at all for not knowing but I was really upset about it and it bothered me all day. I know he’s not that comfortable with his teacher/being in class yet, and it could have been an accident but he really doesn’t have pee accidents ever. I just don’t understand why he wouldn’t tell his teacher. Has anyone else’s child done something like this? I’m not sure what kind of advice or response I’m looking for, I guess I just needed to vent.

Re: Preschool Vent

I wouldn't worry about it. These things happen kids are sometimes scared to ask the teacher to go and he may not of had to go when they all went.

I would just encourage him to tell the teacher he has to go potty and not be scared to say it . I would mention to the teacher he had an accident and maybe she can ask a him if he has to go potty more frequently.

It is a learning process for them.

Re: Preschool Vent

My daughter was in K, so obviously fully potty trained (since around 2.5) and this happened to her twice.
The second time the nurse called to say we should have her tested for a UTI just in case and it turned out she didn't have one

When I asked her about it she said she was so focused on her work she didn't want to ask to get up to go use the bathroom- and then it was just too late.

The teacher said it was pretty common even in K and that is why they asked for a change of clothes at the beginning of the year.

So I wouldn't worry about it at this point. He's still young, it's an adjustment.

Yes, dd did the same thing last year in preK. She doesn't go that often so she usually had no problem holding it for 2.5 hours and avoiding the classroom bathroom altogether. Once or twice I picked her up and she was about ready to burst. We talked about it, the teacher talked about it and walked her into the bathroom to look around just to get her more comfortable. Then one day my mom picked her up and she was soaked and hadn't said a word. I called the teacher to let them know (especially since I'm sure her chair could use a wipe down). We talked about it again, the teacher talked about it again, toured the bathroom again, and just had an ongoing conversation about telling them if she had to go and felt nervous or anything. Maybe a week later she finally used the school bathroom and thankfully never had any more issues. I would just talk to him and keep the teacher in the loop so they can keep an eye on him and encourage him to go too.

My son did this for a week straight right after he turned 4. He had been trained since he was 2 years, 8 months. I thought for sure he had a UTI or diabetes. I took him to the doctor. The doctor tested him and he was fine.

It pretty much came down to the fact that he was having so much fun that he didn't want to stop what he was doing so he would wait until the last minute and have an accident usually en route to the bathroom. Ask the teacher if she can remind him to go to the bathroom. My doctor said it is very common in boys to revert for a brief period of time due to being engrossed in an activity.

Re: Preschool Vent

I know it stinks, but it does happen and could get missed. Especially if it happened towards the end of the day and the kids are so distracted.
Mention to the teacher what happened and let her know he still may need to be reminded so often. My boys are older, but the preschool teachers do make the kids go to the bathroom a few times during the day and of course there are going to be accidents too.

My sons preschool always asks half way through the day if they have to go. Maybe they can do that?

Same here, my DD has a few accidents in K when she’d been trained for YEARS. Several kids did. I wouldn’t worry about it at all!

Thanks everyone. I feel better about it hearing that other kids, even older than him, have done something like that. I keep talking to him about telling his teacher so hopefully he continues to get more comfortable at the school. Thanks all Chat Icon

I'm late to this post but I just wanted to add that my DD is in 2nd grade and still doesn't like to use the bathroom at school because she has FOMO and doesn't want to stop the activity she is doing to go. I have the teacher give her reminders lol. She never has an accident but she has had UTI's from withholding.

I’m surprised they don’t go as a group in preschool? Last year (3s) they took DD’s class like once an hour. Even now in pre-k they go a few times a day as a class. Granted, this is a full time program but even for a half day you’d think they’d take them at least once.

Dd's prek was in an elementary school so there was a single bathroom in the classroom. Kids were expected to just go when they needed to.

My boys are in the 2s class. My one son is trained the other is working on it. They go as a class 1 time during the 2 hours but can go more if the child asks. I’m on the fence because sometimes they have to go more then once an hour but I know neither of my boys will ask their teacher. I take them as soon as I drop them off and as I’m picking them up we walk down to the bathroom. It’s been working so far but I’ve been reminding my boys to ask when they have to go. It may have been missed but I would think their would be a puddle somewhere in the class?

This is the same for DS's class. There's a single bathroom in the classroom.

When I got there he was sitting in his seat and I didn't notice anything on the chair..so I really don't know. His legs weren't wet so I really have no idea how it all played out.

My DS' Pre-K (daycare) would have designated bathroom times as well when they would remind them to use the bathroom (before circle time, snack time, nap time, lunch time), but it is not like they can physically force them to pee. He would just be so engrossed in playing that he would ignore the warning signs.

I think he was embarrassed when I took him to the doctor and he didn't have any more accidents after that.

Still, you would think they would ask children that age if they had to use the bathroom. I would think that’s easier than having to change their clothes and surely it’s easier than calling the parents to come change them.

Same! My DS was having so much fun and was so involved in his class activity that he peed himself minimally TWICE in kindergarten. It was so annoying!

If school is new and exciting and your child is making new friends, he may be totally distracted and just not realizing until it's too late. I would just mention it to the teacher just so they keep an eye out in case he is doing the pee pee dance while playing.
