Emt/paramedic gloves
I’m not sure if I’m over reacting, but find this really gross and want to complain about it....
Our neighbor had to call an ambulance and it seems the paramedics/emt just disposed of the gloves they wore in our street! We have used blue gloves blowing around in front of our house
Is this a thing?! Has anyone else seen this happen? I find it really gross and unsanitary, and want to complain to someone (not sure who) but doubt it will get me anywhere...so coming here to complain
Thanks all, I planned to clean them up when I got home; I noticed them as I left to catch a train and didnt have time to spare to run back in. My perspective is from a mom who could absolutely see my son seeing the glove and putting it on thinking it was cool...or seeing one of my the young kids on the block doing the same thing. But it makes sense that in a rush they drop and go

I can't imagine they would knowingly throw used gloves in the street- perhaps they fell and they didn't realize.
I would just use gloves and pick them up myself rather than see them in the street.

That was my first thought, however there were two gloves on one side of the street, and another two on the other side of the street....ambulance parked right in the middle of street blocking traffic. One random glove I would have thought that and wouldn’t be bothered. 4 gloves, 2 that ended up right near the drivers door and 2 by the passenger door seems unlikely that it was an accident

I am not from Long Island, I gew up in Ct, but what is this facsinaction with posting these questions? Is it for validation or something? I am so perplexed between this one and the one about the dressing room. Are you complaining about the act of throwing the gloves in the street and want to "complaint to their manager" so to speak? I am not saying you're wrong about the gloves, it is gross, but other than a passing glance I wouldn't have thought much more of it to be honest.

I would assume the very last thing on an EMT's mind is picking up their garbage. Most especially if they are responding to an emergency and really don't have time to pick up their gloves or wrappers.
While I am a germophobe myself, I would use new gloves, get a plastic bag, and throw everything out myself.

This happens all the time in the city. I respond to a lot of jobs with Emergency personnel and it’s common practice to dispose of the gloves in the street. During emergencies the last thing anyone thinks about is putting them properly in the garbage but many times you have to change gloves depending if your initial gloves are contaminated and then you’re going let’s say into an ambulance or something else. Anyway my point is that it happens so fast no one thinks about it during emergencies.

I had this happen with my next door neighbor. It is a sad story, so when I saw one blue glove at the curb, I was more or less shaken by the reminder. I didn't even think of germs. I assume it was just dropped, and yes in hindsight the EMTs should be more careful.

Ummm, in an emergency they can't worry about dirty gloves too much in the moment. Chances are they were changing gloves in a rush to prevent contamination of the patient or themselves. Depending on the urgency of the event, cleaning up dirty gloves may not be the priority immediately. If you walk into a hospital room after a cardiac arrest code it is a disaster until it gets cleaned.
If you are uncomfortable throwing it out then call the local ambulance Corp to pick it up after they drop the person in the ER. Be patient, stop finger wagging, it takes a village....

As an ex-volunteer fire fighter who has rode MANY ambulance calls- I can personally echo some of the PPs. There is no way, in the heat of the moment that anyone on an ambulance crew would stop to worry about gloves or wrappers in the street. Ive been on calls were we had to leave things on peoples living room or bedroom floors, streets, parks, you name it. The priority of the EMT/Paramedic is the patient not the garbage.
As a parent I can appreciate the concern, but I do see it from both sides. I would just use a plastic bag or something to avoid touching the glove directly and dispose of it in the trash. Its not a huge deal.

My husband had a major heart attack and was taken by ambulance from his job to the hospital.
Last thing I would want to worry about is if the EMT's picked up their used gloves.
I'd rather they get him stabilized and to the hospital ASAP, which they did.
I think his life is worth more than a couple of used gloves laying on the ground.

I run a blood borne pathogen training program. One of the required elements is removal and disposal of soiled PPE (personal protective equipment).

I’m a medical professional and I think leaving soiled gloves laying in the street is deplorable. Say the patient had HIV or hepatitis and now kids come along and start playing with it? We are trained to use universal precautions and to handle everyone as if they have communicable diseases because there is no way to know otherwise. Incredibly irresponsible to not properly dispose of your bright blue gloves, which I’m sure are that color in the street setting for a reason. It takes two seconds to bend over and grab your gloves, I’m certain there is a place for disposal in the ambulance.

Yep. Welcome to LI. Where an emergency professional can be stabilizing an airway with one hand, holding an IV line in the other to prevent infiltration or loss of IV access, trying to recall which part of the ACLS protocol is next to give the correct medication and dosage, watching a cardiac monitor, dealing with screaming hysteric relatives and possible a combative patient, all for pennies in the dollar pay, and you drop a glove, that truthfully should be disposed of but you are human, you get criticized.
Instead of attacking them how about thinking of ways to help. Call the FD, PD, EMTs, and they will retrieve. They are used condoms, cigarettes, all types of shit in the road all the time. Do kids randomly go into the road to play with roadkill?? Probably not, you see it an call for retrieval and clean up. That’s it.
Lets not forget that EMTs on LI are VOLUNTEER. Only Paramedics are paid, and paid pitifully at that... But yes, lets throw stones...

Not sure why everyone is attacking her. It could potentially be harmful or contaminated
body fluids.
I was a medic in the city as well as a volley on the Island and I never once thought to drop my gloves on the ground no matter what the call was.
