Washington DC with Kids

We want to do a weekend trip to DC with our kids (ages 7 and 5). Not sure where to begin! They are very interested in seeing the monuments and sights!

Re: Washington DC with Kids

We just did a few days away in DC with my 8 year old son. We took Amtrak down. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott DC Capitol. It is right next to the NOMA metro stop on the red line. We used the metro to go everywhere. We got there in the late afternoon so we went to see the monuments then. We walked to White House and then over to the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial by the time we got there it was light up. Very pretty. The next day we did the museums. We did the Air & Space, Natural History and American History. Last day we did the zoo. Everything we did was free because it is part of the Smithsonian. It is a lot of walking and it was very hot but we had fun.

We went overnight last summer. If you know your date try to arrange with your local representative for the white house tour. It was pretty cool to be able to go inside the white house. From there we walked to the Museum of American History which we all enjoyed. Then we walked down Constitution Avenue past the Washington memorial and ended at the Lincoln memorial. It was a really fun day.

Re: Washington DC with Kids

We did DC in February with our 7 year old. It was freezing so we focused mostly on indoor activities. We loved the Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History. We also LOVED doing the nighttime monument tour. That was a blast.

Some good kid friendly restaurants we loved were Matchbox and b DC Penn Quarter. Very kid friendly and food was delish. I had a pizza at Matchbox that I'm still thinking about all these months later.

Air & Space and the National Zoo are must-sees. I went last year with my then 3 and 6 year old, and we saw the monuments around the National Mall at sunset/night. Crowds were smaller and everything was so beautiful with the way the statues and monuments were lighted. Something to consider doing if you have the time.
