Re: Summer Camp

I agree, affordable is relative. There is no way I could afford 10k for summer camp, but some parents I know act like 10k is a bargain!

The daycare/center DS goes to changes it's program from academics to a camp type of atmosphere in the summer. They have a water/sprinkler day, field trips all over the island, bounce house day, etc. The field trips are to places like the aquarium, ecology site and local businesses that do fun activities. He goes for a full day 3 days a week and it's nowhere near 5k for the whole summer. I like that it's daycare hours, but the trips and activities make it exciting for him.

Yeah, it's impossible to find a camp that has daycare hours. Until now, my parents watched my daughter. But now we feel that she needs more interaction with kids her age.

We found a camp that has busing. But pick up is at 8:30 am and drop off is around 4:30 pm. This only works for us because she's almost 11 years old and she just lets herself in and out with her key. If she was any younger, it wouldn't work. But, I think you can opt for early drop off / late pick up instead of the bus. It's 8 weeks for $7,500. If you have more than one kid I think there's a discount, but not much.

I agree that camp is not for working parents. The daycare my children went/go to has a summer program so the hours could be 7am-6:30pm but there's no pool. We decided to send our kids to a real camp this year. The cost is astronomical plus we also have a babysitter to put them on and take them off the bus. The cost adds up, but they truly love the camp, so I suck it up and scrape together the money.

This thread is making me really happy I work in the city. I can name 3 camps that are 8 - 6:30 and run under 1k for almost 8 weeks.

And there are camps for middle school students that are free.

When my son was in daycare, I never looked at camps because he just went there all year round. However, it's a different story when they are school aged. Also full 5 days a week, increases the price a lot with camps.

Look into daycares that have summer programs. They are usually cheaper than camps. I was looking for 6 weeks over the summer for my 4 year old DD. Camps quoted me $3600 or more. I ended up putting her into Kiddie Academy and they were a lot cheaper. I think the weekly price does go up once they are 5 but it is still a lot cheaper than camps.

ETA that my local school district does do a summer rec program but it's only 9-12 so that would not work for working parents.

My son goes to Camps R Us. They have several locations. He goes to the one in Bellmore. Our district has a summer camp program full day for the whole summer but he's going into middle school next year so they stopped after 6th grade. Camps R Us is flexible as far as how many weeks and how many days you want to use, and charge based on that.

I had no idea school districts had camps. Are you Bellmore or N Bellmore?

I think most school districts have a summer recreation program. It runs for kids entering K-6th grade in my district and costs around $500 for 5 weeks. It's 9am-3pm and they go on trips if you sign them up and they have art too. My son did it for 2 years. Now he'd rather go to baseball camp and art classes, so we do that instead. Baseball camp is also run through my district and it's the HS Baseball coach running the program with the kids from the baseball team helping to coach the kids.

My district only offers camp from 9-12 and the district my parents are in offers it 9-3 but you must go home during lunch. My husband and I both work full time and I'm in the city so I'm limited one what we can do.

9-3 isn't even an option for working parents. Even it they got to stay there for lunch.
As someone mentioned, these district camps and town camps that are more affordable are really not for working parents at all.

Yeah, as I read these posts I realized I will, in fact, be paying $10k+ for camp.

I saw an article not long ago about how summer vacation needs to be re-configured because of the toll it takes on working parents. I’ll try to find it.

If it weren't for my husband retiring at 41, I'd be screwed.
Everyone asks if he will get another job.
You know what? Him getting another job will end up COSTING us money
He puts her on the bus. Takes her off.
Stays with her all summer and she can go to these BS hours camps if she wants just to get out of the house for a few hours here and there.
It is a true true blessing to have him home.
And saves us a shit ton of money

I live in the city too, sorry typo

And my job is flexible so if I get here at 9:10 (although this summer I've been early bc his camp bus is at 7:20 and I'm on the express bus at 7:25)

Summer Camp

There are options for working parents where you don’t have to pay 10k. My son is at camps r us full time and we pay for after care. It’s less than 3500 for the summer. They have before care too. So the hrs. An be 7 or 730-6.

And while the daycares might be cheaper....if I sent my 7 year old to his old daycare camp program he would hate it. As they get older they daycares are boring for them.

When my son was in daycare, I never looked at camps because he just went there all year round. However, it's a different story when they are school aged. Also full 5 days a week, increases the price a lot with camps.

I can see the daycare camp not working out once DS goes into middle school. It seems like that's the age the other parents around here enroll their kids in actual camp. I inquired about adding the 2 days to make it 5 full days. The price increase wasn't that bad IMO (compared to the other options). Still only around 3k total for the entire summer. I think that's totally worth it, I just can't justify the cost because I'm not currently working.

Actually I’m the opposite, I needed camp before middle school. There weren’t “daycare” camps that were open to school aged kids around where I live. I’m actually thinking he will be out of camp when he reaches his last year of middle school.

His camp is around 3k maybe a little less but it’s a full 10 weeks, 7-4:30pm, paying for before care. You can pick different shifts. Last year we did 8:30-6:30 and paid for before care. If they closed this camp I would be screwed in the summer. Lol.

Not all areas have that option though. The camps in my area are also ridiculously expensive and when you have more than one kid even the camps at 3,500 are quite expensive. So I put my kids in camp in Queens by my office and its about 2K for 6 weeks including after and before care- 8 am-6pm. Its not ideal for them bc there is no pool, no field trips and they are not with friends from our area but as a working parent it works for me!

Camps r us has locations all over LI. I am a working parent and many time we are both commuting to the city so it’s before and after care.

All I’m saying is that there are more affordable options out there but you have to look for them.

I agree, sometime you have to look outside the box but they are very rare and hard to find in my experience esp depending on where you live. Thats not to say t hat you cant find stuff for under 10K but even 3, 4,5 K is alot IMO>

I live in Western Nassau and there are literally no camps around that I would consider affordable. Even taking your example of Camps R Us the closest location is 20-30 minutes away from where i live and in the opposite direction of where I work. PLus 3,500 times 2 is not quite affordable for me for a summer program.

The lack of any reasonably priced camps in my town or surrounding towns is the reason I am sending my kids to camp in queens. I am fortunate that there is a camp available very close to my office with extended hours so it makes it convenient.

Anyway you look at it summer camp for working parents is a PIA. It would be nice if all districts offered an option for a full day program in addition to the typical 9-12.

$3500 x's 2. Things seem reasonable but when you have multiple kids it adds up.

All of this! When you have more than one kid super camps cost an arm and a leg. I'm really at a loss as to what we are going to do and how we are going to pay for it.

Re: Summer Camp

My kids go to a great day camp in my area, have been attending since K (my oldest is in MS now) and still loves. I feel its really reasonably priced, at least compared to others that go for 10K for the summer. They go the full 8 weeks, 3 days per week. Before care is free and aftercare is until 6 and is $10/day.

I know full day rates are about $3200 per kid for the full summer, 5 days per week, which isnt cheap but at least its not equivalent to the cost of a trip to Europe.

We do the 3 days for the 8 weeks and its about $2450 per kid. So about $5000 for the 8 weeks.

Its a lot of camp for the money. They have art, music, nature classes, event days (tie dye, water slide, line dancing, talent show etc). They have instructional swim in the AM and free swim in the PM. They play sports, go to gym. They are outside almost all day. Pizza lunch is included on Fridays. My older one goes on about 2 trips per week which are included in the cost. This summer hes gone/going to Adventureland, Rock Climbing, Ducks Game, Country Fair, Canoe Trip, Medieval Times, the movies.

They have academic enrichment classes, athletic workshops, culinary workshops, fine art workshops, STEM workshops, for an additional fee of course.

$3500 x's 2. Things seem reasonable but when you have multiple kids it adds up.

While understand people might not think 3500 is reasonable for a child and even more when you have to send multiple kids but when you break it down to an hrly price for me it’s 11/hr. And I’m sorry I don’t think you can expect to pay less than that. Just My opinion. I payed more for daycare and they didn’t swim and go on trips all the time.

I say this all the time, we haven't progressed much past the 1950s when it comes to working moms.
It's sad.

We put an offer in on a house a few weeks ago and had to withdraw it when we found out the ONE pre-k in the area with extended hours didn’t have any space available in Sept. People keep telling me I’m nuts and “couldn’t you figure something out?” Um, no unless you’re offering to babysit and chauffeur my child back and forth to school at 9 and 2.
