Summer Camp
Where do you send your kids to summer camp? We will be looking for next year and everything seems so out of our price point and our district does not offer full day summer rec.

My son goes to Camps R Us. They have several locations. He goes to the one in Bellmore. Our district has a summer camp program full day for the whole summer but he's going into middle school next year so they stopped after 6th grade. Camps R Us is flexible as far as how many weeks and how many days you want to use, and charge based on that.

We always sent our kids to camp through the district, Three Village. Their camp and their before and after care are open to non-residents but it just costs a little more. Even with that slight increase it is VERY affordable and the kids LOVE it!

Look into your jobs flex spending accounts. Money is taken out pre tax and set aside. I have a dependent care account and day camp is included.

Maybe check YMCA camps? I’m in NJ and my son goes to a YMCA traveling day camp. When I started looking for camps this was the most affordable option and they do activities.
Good luck, summer camps are $ and I feel like they are limited options.

i used to do this back when my son was of this age. it helped a lot to make it more affordable

My son also goes to Camps R Us. Farmingdale location. This is year 2. Last year we did all weeks. This year he’s doing hockey camp for 2 weeks and the rest of the time at CRU.

i think affordable means something different for everyone.
if you are in nassau country they offer a camp for like 6-7 weeks its outdoors but for all i think 9-5 something like that and its like $900 for the whole thing. only downside is that they do cancel it if it rains!
You should check to see if your town offers camps sometimes they offer all day camp if thats what you need.
pump it up offers a camp. its like $200 for all week from 8:30-4:30 and you can pay extra for before and after care.
the Roller skating ring offers camp too not sure exact price but i know its a lot less then most camps.
My kids go to a taekwon do camp. its really reasonable. is it the best camp around compare to others, no but it works for us.
I personally don't believe in spending tons and tons of money on camp and its probably because i never went and don't get the appeal.
the camp they go to is cheaper than getting someone to come to my house since people want ridiculous prices for off the book jobs

I totally agree with this. On a local board I am on people will ask for affordable and people will respond with camps that are 2k for 3 weeks. TO ME that is not affordable.
Check in the schools. I live in the city but my son went to camps in schools since he was 6. And that was about $700 for the whole summer, which I do consider reasonable (especially for 8am-6:30pm)
This year he got accepted to a STEM camp run by the city and he is bused, includes breakfast and lunch and it is FREE, lol. Maybe see if there is anything like that around

Summer Camp
My DD goes to a camp that is not inexpensive. She goes 4x per week for 8 full weeks, from 8am-4:00pm. They have extended PM hours to 6PM for either $10 or $20 (I can't remember, and I haven't used it yet this year). It's 1/2 hour from home, but 10 minutes away from my office. I could send her to her school district for real cheap, but she gets Red Cross swim lessons every morning, a free swim every afternoon, and every single day her other activities change the way a school day does - 45-60 minute periods of activity, then on to the next thing. This is her 6th summer and she loves it.
They accept payments, offer discounts for early enrollment, offer discounts at their open houses, and have returning camper discounts for repeat customers.

So I need something that isn't going to cost $10K of even $5K for the summer. I cant stand when someone will say check out this camp and its $10K per kid.... Like really people, you may have it but I sure don't.

I have 3 kids and my friend only has one. For her sending one kid to camp sounds reasonable because its one kid but when you multiply that 2500 for the summer by 3 it becomes crazy expensive to me. My 2 kids go to a summer camp from 8:30-11:30 for 3 weeks at their school. Next year my youngest will go with them. It will cost me 500 for 3 weeks and will give them something to do. I feel that summer is so short by the time August comes around you really only have about 4 weeks left and then the grind of school starts again. My kids also do art camp for two hours for a few days a week. Again its something for them to do since Im home during the summer. I hear about camps costing tons of money and I just can't afford that.

Can I just say it’s nice to hear that there are camps that aren’t a million dollars? DH and I have always assumed that we would need to budget like $10k a year for camp and figured it was just one of the many ways the world is ****** for working parents.

But I find that the expensive camps don’t address this either. In our area they are only for 8 weeks, pick up is around 8 and they end before 5. They are more geared for the parents in NYC who send their kids so they can work. My friends who work in the city and even friends who work locally are paying for before and after care. It’s better than the cheaper camps that are 9-3 or 9-12 but still not perfect.
I think the price difference is the amenities. Price shoots up drastically when a pool is on site.
I ran the numbers when my kids got to camp age and it would cost me more money than it would when they were in full time daycare for before/after care and camp.

Same, I never even went to camp as a kid so knew nothing about it when I was looking for one for my son. But I needed something to put him in while I was at work, it’s a necessity like daycare. Camps in my area were like 6k+ until I found one for like 10 weeks around 3k. Ofocurse I still think it is freaking expensive but it’s a lot cheaper than what I was finding. Plus that’s with 7am drop off, runs till end of August (I find most camps didn’t) and they go on day trips. It was also close to my home which I was finding difficult in NJ. I have to commute into the city and didn’t have time to drive the opposite way to come back and drop my car off to take the bus to work.
I do a weekly payment plan and I try to put a larger deposit up front.

Yeah, it's impossible to find a camp that has daycare hours. Until now, my parents watched my daughter. But now we feel that she needs more interaction with kids her age.
We found a camp that has busing. But pick up is at 8:30 am and drop off is around 4:30 pm. This only works for us because she's almost 11 years old and she just lets herself in and out with her key. If she was any younger, it wouldn't work. But, I think you can opt for early drop off / late pick up instead of the bus. It's 8 weeks for $7,500. If you have more than one kid I think there's a discount, but not much.
