If you have Ring doorbell (or similar system) - come in!

Hello!

I'm thinking about buying the Ring Doorbell...but I have no idea how it works. Can someone give me a cliff notes version?

Does it work on wifi? Battery? Hardwired? Do I need a paid monthly subscription? How long does the camera feed stay logged? Any cons to it?

Or maybe there's an alternative system that works better?

Help a sister out.

Thanks!

We got our ring from costco, which includes one year of service. I think they have 2 different packages for service at something like 3 and 10 a month with the number of days storing images difference.

Ours is hard wired to what was our existing doorbell and it has a battery backup.we get notifications on our phone, so I guess it uses wifi, my husband installed it. They were excellent at helping us trouble shoot getting it installed with our existing 30 year old doorbell. It worked without needing extra parts, but we did use electrical tape which we had an supplied ourselves.

The install took about an hour for us.

I am very happy with it, and feel like it has paid for itself many times over.

You can get either a hardwired one or one that has a rechargeable battery. If you have an existing hardwired doorbell, you can replace it with the hardwired Ring. If no exisintg doorbell, you can do the battery operated one. I have the battery one. It notifies you when the battery is running low. Either one connects to your wi-fi to send you notifications.

I have had it for a few months and haven't paid for a subscription yet - but I guess I have one year free (I don't recall hearing about that, but I haven't paid and I do have video events saved on my phone)

From the Ring FAQ page:
All Ring devices will operate without an additional fee or subscription. However, we offer optional Ring Video Recording Plans that cost a monthly or yearly subscription fee. Without Ring Video Recording, you will still receive alerts when visitors press your Doorbell or trigger the motion sensors in your device, and you’ll still get live streaming video and two-way audio, so you can see, hear and speak to guests in real-time, as the event is happening. However, if you don’t have Ring Video Recording and you miss an alert or a live event, you will not be able to review the video. Ring Video Recording will save all of your recordings to your Ring account for up to 60 days, and with Ring Video Recording, you can also review the videos, download them to local storage, and share them via social media, text and email. There are two options for Ring Video Recording: Basic and Protect. Basic costs $3 per month or $30 for the year per device; Protect costs $10 per month or $100 for year, and it covers an unlimited amount of Ring cameras, offers a lifetime product warranty and gives you an additional 10% off future purchases at Ring.com.
