Living in the moment?

I log on to Facebook this morning and all I see is about 100 posts about how it's half way to Christmas. Like literally, every other post is this.

Other than people being sheep and having to re-post everything everyone else posts, I don't understand why we can't just live in the moment.

Summer just started on Friday. School isj just ending. The weather is finally getting warmer, the days are longer after a very long winter. Why are we thinking about something that is 6 months away?
Why can't we enjoy each season, each month, each holiday, for what it is?
All I see is back to school stuff in stores and online and my daughter hasn't even finished THIS school year.
I see patio furniture and grills in stores in February when there is still snow on the ground and several more months before you can even consider using that stuff.
I understand that retail is a different story because that is how they stock their merchandise etc.

But in your own personal life, why are you even THINKING about something that is 6 months away and posting about it all over social media?

I just feel like nobody can enjoy the moment anymore. It's kind of sad.

Re: Living in the moment?

I just like to get ready for Christmas early! I started Christmas shopping. Chat Icon I find if I buy a little something here and there it doesn't hurt the wallet so much. I barely notice that I'm spending it.

But you bet your ass I'm still going to enjoy the summer!

ETA: I actually look forward to summer the most- in December when the days start getting longer by about 30 seconds, I already start dreaming of the warm weather. Chat Icon It helps me get through those cold, snowy days.

Preparing and buying stuff ahead of time is different.
That would be like me buying a grill in February because it's on a great sale.
But the constant posts on social media, the countdown to Christmas, the 360 days left to Christmas... it's a bit much.
Enjoy the moment. You don't know what tomorrow will bring.

I think the issue is the posting on fb. I love the fall season and Christmas and look forward to those things, but that doesn’t equate to me not living in the moment. I’m also looking forward to the summer mornings of not having to catch a bus, pack a lunch, etc... I don’t like how the stores rush holidays, but it’s all just to make money.

You're probably right.
I think it's seeing it 60 times this morning as I scroll through my feed that really made it seem like- OK ENOUGH.
I have a calendar. I am aware that June is 6 months from December. Jeez.

I also have a women that at the end of every month posts a Snoopy meme saying, Good bye April. Good bye May. Etc.
It gives me anxiety as I feel the year flying by and my life rushing away.

Re: Living in the moment?

I understand what you are saying. I look forward to Xmas, but I don’t make counting down day posts. I also don’t buy anything much anymore. I’m trying to do the minimalist thing.

That being said, I’m sitting here in 90 degree heat (tomorrow 100) with no A/C and really no chance of relief. I’m lucky if the bus has A/C when I go into work. European heat waves are the worst. I have my fan set up in the window at night and leave my blinds shut all day to block out any sun. And then SO will turn off the fan and say it’s bad for his health in the middle of the night when all the cool air is coming in.

I don’t mind these posts because I want something to look forward to. Bring on cooler weather and the holidays that go with it!

True. I definitely don't do the countdown thing at all. I barely post on FB with the exception of pictures of the kids so that my friends/family can see them.

I think it's probably to put pressure on people to shop! Like I see a lot of those countdowns "Only 20 more fridays til Christmas!" which freaks me the hell out (Incidentally, there are 26 Fridays til Christmas at the moment Chat Icon) because I think if I buy a gift a week, I'm STILL behind on everyone I have to shop for.
Chat Icon

ETA: I do have a friend who posts constant updates til Halloween because it's her favorite holiday and I always think nooooooooo because that means no more summer, but for some reason the Christmas one doesn't bother me.

I think that's a part of it too. I tend towards anxiety and don't need any added stress in my life!
I just want to go sit on a beach for a while and do nothing. Buy nothing. Decorate nothing.

I am anxious regardless of season so this has no effect on me!

My question is, who has the time and/or desire to post something as ridiculous as a Christmas countdown on social media? Like who thought that up? Is Buddy the elf real??

Re: Living in the moment?

completely agree!!

i'm the type of person who starts christmas shopping on 12/26 and i occasionally will countdown. i do it because i'm cheap... i want to spend as little as possible. i also do it because i want to be able to enjoy the holiday season. i want the task of shopping done before the season arrives.

with that said... i completely understand about the two points
1. people are sheep and repost EVERYTHING like it's their job. how about you vote with the same fervor you post crap on social media??
2. too many people forget to live in the moment. SoCal has had a very cold and cloudy spring. i'm looking forward to pedicures and getting outside more.

PS. my christmas list is written, about half of the items have been purchased, and i'll be crafting this weekend Chat Icon *ducks under my desk*

So this is off topic a bit, but I started the thread, so I'm allowed! Chat Icon

Speaking of sheep and reposting everything.
I have this woman on my friends list who reposts EVERYTHING. Every missing kid, every missing dog every urban legend about people making you smell perfume samples in the mall parking lot so they can make you pass out and kidnap you- EVERYTHING.
True, false, disproved by Snopes, doesn't matter. She just haphazardly reposts it.

A few weeks ago she posted a very old story about a missing baby who they thought was kidnapped. It was about a year or so old and the baby had been found safe. If you even clicked the article, it said- update- baby found safe!
So someone replied and said- The baby has been found safe.
Not a week later, she is posting the SAME damn thing.
Like do you read?
Or if not, do you read the comments on your post?
I don't even know where she finds this crap.

Living in the moment?

And this is why it feels like our lives are moving at warp speed. No one (stores specifically) lets us enjoy anything without selling the next holiday or season thing. January 1 and I'm sure they start putting out stuff for Valentines Day and so on.
Can we please enjoy the holiday/season that we are in??

I agree with you and feel the same. I certainly have days where I am exhausted and eager for the weekend to arrive. However, I mostly really do live for the day...I don't want to wish my life away waiting for the next big holiday, vacation, weekend, etc.

I feel like for some people the only thing they care about in their life is Christmas.
It ends and the countdown to next year starts.
I mean it's one day. You really live your life for ONE day?
I can see maybe as a kid, but come on.

the living for christmas (i believe) is that they have built this unrealistic expectation of themselves and how they are supposed to create the most perfect holiday season for their family.

again, social media... we believe these snapshots people put out there of what they do. these snapshots take a lot of behind-the-scenes work, but they look effortless. and people buy the fantasy... then expect that they should be able to recreate it themselves.

i think i've said it here... i believe that social media is like a hammer. it all depends on your intent.

a hammer can build a home and can fix a problem, but if used "incorrectly," it can tear down your home or kill your wife. it's all in how you intend to use it.

i love looking at pinterest, facebook, and instagram for pictures of things that are possible. but there is only so much that one crafty/couponing woman can do.

again, i do my holiday shopping early so i can ENJOY the holiday season without having to enter a single store.

I do live in the moment and cherish each day but I freakin' LOVE the Christmas season! I'll admit that the 6 month countdown got me very excited! That means in 5 months we can put up the Christmas lights! :)

The season is really special for me and I enjoy it immensely - beyond just the one day. I'm not sure why that would bother anyone else.

Re: Living in the moment?

I agree. I like living in the moment. DH drives me crazy because he lives in the future. DS graduated yesterday from MS, and DH started like a month ago... in 4 weeks is graduation day, then in 3 weeks is graduation day, etc, then only 6 more days left of MS Chat Icon I was like stop already. Let's live each day. Time flies, so why do we want to miss each day thinking on the future. One thing is to plan, I'm a planner myself, but other is to talk about what's coming and missing what's happening today.

What is it with Germans and drafts ? My mom was nuts about this, especially when my niece and nephew were babies.
But yet German and Scandinavian children can get bundled up in zero degree weather to get "fresh air".

Live the moment.
Time goes by too fast and then there is nothing left but regrets for the past.

People like Christmas a little too much I feel... like you said, let’s not rush it. I’d much rather be enjoying my pool and backyard than imagining myself bundled up with snow on the ground... but that’s just me lol.
