Having a child in a cast during the summer

Moms... help me please! What did you do if your child had a cast on for the summer? My son had a boot for an ankle fracture for the next 6 weeks! I’m so sad for him! My boys are so rough and each had stitches this year and now my one twin has a boot!! He’s been begging to go outside, he loves the water, pool, and playing in the yard. My kids are outside all day every day! I got him a bunch of indoor new activities and tried to make do, like giving him a big tub of beans to dig in etc. but he just wants to be out running and my other twin is begging to get out too but I can’t leave in in while I’m outside with the other. I’ve taken them for like 2 walks a day, taken them for a drive, let him play in the tub for a bit... this is going to be a long 5.5 more weeks Chat Icon

Having a child in a cast during the summer

My daughter was in a cast when she was 13 months old for a broken leg. It was July. We still played outside, we were just careful to not put water in the water table, and I still pushed her on the baby swing.

The hospital originally told me 6 weeks as well when they casted her, but when I took her for the follow-up at the orthopedist, he said 3 weeks and she'd be good to go. He was right and she was out of her cast in 3 weeks. Maybe you'll get lucky like that as well.

He’s so fixated on playing in water/ pool, digging in the dirt and playing in the sandbox, they told me it can’t get wet.. isn’t it going to get so nasty if it’s outside? Wet grass, dirt etc? I can’t imagine it staying clean for long

They sell waterproof protectors, or you can probably use a bag and duct take. Should keep it clean enough. How did they advise you to bathe him?

when my son was 6 he broke his arm and had a cast... the doctor actually told me to wrap it in that Glad Press and Seal stuff to keep it dry for baths... maybe try that for when he wants to go outside? might not keep it dry when full on swimming, but would keep it somewhat clean walking around. or i'm sure on Amazon you can buy a cast/ boot cover. that way he can at least be out doing bubbles or the swings or something...

Just let him outside, my son had a cast on his leg at 18mos and he played outside, it was really fine. No need to keep him in, and if it gets dirty...a little dirt never hurt anyone, not worth missing half the summer for. Hope he heals quickly!

Exactly. Who cares if it's dirty?
And wrap it up in plastic bags or something if he wants to do the water table or splash type things.

Having a child in a cast during the summer

My daughter had a boot a couple of summers ago for a fractured foot. Can he walk on it? She was able to walk on it after a few days and went outside with it and played pretty normal. I just avoided getting it wet and put out blankets on the lawn with toys until she got used to it.

I’m going to do the press and deal! It comes off for a bath only, it’s one of those boot casts. I tried bagging it but it was ripped up in no time! I did the press and seal and that seems to be better than the bag!

Glad that the Press and Seal idea is helping so far!! Like i said, the doctor (or nurse... can't remember...) gave us the idea when my son had his cast. now i pass it on to anybody whose kid gets a cast!! HAHA
good luck!!!
