Re: Anyone else suffering from working mom guilt?

I'm thankful that my job is somewhat flexible and I have more vacation days than typical that I am able to use days or ask to come in late.

I am class mom, and I take photos for the parents of the kids in our class of things like field day so the parents have them and so they can go into the yearbook.

Parents volunteer to run activities. For the smaller children, some parents do sit and watch, but for the most part the parents are the ones running the activities.

As for the end of year things, they are only with the class parents, other parents are not invited.

So in my mind, the only activity you would miss is field day, but most kids understand their parents are not there for it.

As for star of the week, since you knew in advance when their birthday is, I would plan for those days.

But even as class mom, I missed the field trip because of a scheduling conflict. A working parents happily took my place. You can't be there for everything, and that is ok.

We have two concerts (K-2 and 3-4) from 9:30-10:30 am. My kids are in 1st and 3rd. Each grade also has a specific end of year event - usually from 9:30-10:30 - that parents attend as well. Unfortunately my kids events are from 9:30-11:45 on the same day.

There’s also an end of year party that certain parents are chosen to attend (thankfully I did an earlier party for each kid).

It’s a lot on top of field day, field trips and half days!!!

Oh, our concerts are at night. That is just too much in school stuff for parents. Do you live in a district where there are a lot of stay at home parents? We don't have nearly as many parent involved end of year activities. They are spaced out a lot and this would not fly for our school district. Most events are after school so working parents can attend too.

It’s not in the teachers contracts to go to concerts at night so the one time they tried it supposedly it was a disaster...

We have some SAH Parents but we also have a lot of parents who work different schedules (nurses, cops and firemen) bit we also have a lot of teachers who have a hard time getting off for everything.

To offer another perspective, I feel non-working mom guilt all the time. I am a SAHM by choice, and I am incredibly grateful to be able to attend these school events, but I have been feeling very guilty lately when I think about all of the money I could have been contributing towards my kids' college and our retirement all these years. I've actually decided to try to get back into the work force in the next year or 2, and I've spoken to my children already about how things are going to change when I go back to work.

When I look around at all these events, it's A LOT of grandmas and grandpas. That's unfortunately not an option in our family. It's nice that you have your mom to help you out.

I do not think night activities are ever in teacher contracts. Teachers get paid to chaperone those events and I assume the music teachers submit a form to get reimbursed for their time. Teachers in the audience merely go because they want to see their students perform.

i was gonna say the same thing! I think the music teachers who run the concert get special reinbursement for the nighttime shows.... but the regular teachers aren't required to go at night to watch... if they do, thats their own choice.
so that shouldn't be a reason to do only daytime shows, and make all the parents have to take off work to see their kids concert....
in our district im pretty sure they do 2 shows that day- one during school for the students, staff and any parents/ family that can make it during the day.... and then another one at night

I have 2 teacher friends (DOE) and they wouldn’t miss something their class did for anything. They’ve changed plans to see their students perform and they def didn’t get paid. I’ve always assumed most teachers were similarly amazing and would attend these events if they were able to,free of charge.

Re: Anyone else suffering from working mom guilt?

Yes very much so. Until a couple of weeks ago, I missed it ALL! My kids always question why I’m not at school, why we don’t vacation during Christmas breaks, why can’t they relax over the summer, etc. My mom worked a very corporate job and we were out of the house from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. As much as I am proud of her, I don’t want that for me or my children, neither does my DH. My job was very stressful so I didn’t have the proper “headspace” for my kids. There are many SAHM’s in my town so the kids notice more. As far as a village, parents are at these events for their own kids so it still stings a bit. Grandparents can’t go to every single function either.

Yes but I can’t do it all. I took off for DD’s field trip but told her I can only do field day or field trip, not both. Can’t feel too bad about since I work to put a roof over their head lol

Re: Anyone else suffering from working mom guilt?

Yes!

I work close so I try to go to what I can, my husband can work from home so when I can't he tries to, still we miss things.

My son is in 2nd and his field day/picnic is next weeK. I took the day. I figure not too much longer he will jump and run and kiss me when I come to his events.

But yeah I miss stuff amd I hate it. I like working and I always remind myself I work FOR my kids, so they can have the lives I want them to have. If I could be home w them I would (even if it meant me missing working)

Re: Anyone else suffering from working mom guilt?

A little bit. But I take time (sometimes just a few hours rather than a whole day) for a performance or other important event as much as possible. There haven’t been that many so far. Class trips I never get to go & ds always brings it up, but honestly I have no interest in chaperoning a kindergarten class trip anyway. I also feel bad a little bit that I can’t do pick up daily at 2:30 like a lot of the parents do... but I pick him up from after school at 5:30 which is the best I can do... and I drop him off at school in the morning. So far I don’t feel like I miss much.
