Driving to MD - when to leave
I am going to Maryland next weekend. Have to leave either sometime Friday or early Saturday. I KNOW Jersey Shore traffic will make it miserable, but trying to figure out the "best" time to go to avoid as much traffic as possible. So, when would be best - very early Friday, midday Friday or very early Saturday?

I’m a big fan of leaving at ungodly early hours
What time do you have to be there?
And how long does it usually take to get there?
We drove to South Carolina one summer. It was a 12 hour ride. Three families each with two little kids (5&2 years old). We had to account for DC rush hour traffic etc.
One dad wanted to leave here at 8pm to get there at 8am.
One dad wanted to leave at 6am
I insisted on leaving here at 2am
By the time we stopped for bathrooms and gas we arrived at 4pm and it was perfect timing
Just try and figure how long it should take you to get there and go backwards accounting for traffic lol

I like leaving at like 4 or 5 am. Once you are out of NY it's never as bad.
Get over the bridge before 6 and it's much better.

Agree! We went to MD a couple weeks ago and left early on a Sunday morning. Got to Baltimore in 3.5 hours, with one stop.
The drive home is going to be awful though.

We drive that way often. We have found that leaving early Saturday morning is generally the best time to go.

It is usually about 4.5 - 5 hours, but after Memorial Day, the trip becomes insane on weekends because you get the traffic trying to get off LI and then traffic heading to the Jersey Shore - that's what the tricky part is in trying to figure out when to leave. And yes, I know Sunday is going to be complete misery

Are you planning on taking I-95 or the GSP thru Jersey ?
I would guess that in terms of Shore traffic, I-95 would be less congested as it is more inland.

My brother lives in MD. My parents left 6am on a Saturday to go visit him and they didn't have any trouble getting there.

I went to MD in Nov. Left Fri around 1 and got there around 6. I stopped when I wanted - I was alone.
I left MD Sunday at 2 and did not get home until almost 9.

I think it becomes a whole different game heading down that way after Memorial Day because of beach traffic - that's my biggest concern

I would definitely avoid midday Friday. The least amount of traffic will probably be early on Saturday--though I would personally want to leave early Friday to maximize the time there.
If you can get out of New York by 6/7, you might be okay...no promises though
