College commitment day

When did this become such a big day? My private school makes a big to do about it-do public schools?

I feel like the whole college thing has changed so much since I started 15 years ago (and it makes me feel old lol).

College commitment day

We do college pride day and the seniors are encouraged to wear a shirt from their chosen school, as are the teachers. The underclassmen are asked to wear a school they’d like to attend. Then we take photos of the kids together or if a kid is going to a teacher’s alma mater, we take a photo as well.

We do a similar thing at the school I teach at.

Seems a little much to me. What about the kids that want to go into a trade?

Our district did it this week too. We never did it when I was in high school.

College commitment day

I graduated in the 90’s and we did this. It wasn’t a formal “day” or anything, I think the seniors just decided to do it and wore a shirt of their chosen school.

My school is small-20-40 kids per grade, but they basically all go to college. Maybe five or six in the past ten years haven’t?

But I feel like the college process has changed so much, and I don’t really like what it’s become. I know so many people who have taken their kids all over the country touring schools sophomore/junior year, without any assurance the kids will even get into those schools!

I did that and I graduated in the 90s. I citied a number of schools in the South, Northeast and Midwest to see different schools. The visits really helped - a few schools that looked good on paper werent the right fit and the one I chose wasn’t even high on my list until i visited.

College commitment day

Not a fan of this at all. They do it at our High School too. There are plenty of kids that go into trade schools or just go to work after HS that would have no shirt to wear. With the world becoming so PC I'm surprised they still do this.

I never heard of this till last week. I went to HS in the 90's in Queens and it wasn't a thing. I think it's stupid, but I think most things like that today are stupid!

Me too...my dad took us all over while in HS! We made little vacations out of it. I thought it was normal to visit colleges before applying?

I wasn’t touring Harvard or anything but there was no guarantee I was getting into some of the schools I toured.

Re: College commitment day

I'm curious as to why people tour schools before even applying? I applied to the schools I was interested in and then went to visit all the ones I got into to make my decision.

I imagine it's not a money thing as paying an application fee is way less than taking trips to visit schools.

Honestly just curious as to the rationale.

I think we did it bc my dad simply enjoyed the traveling. However it was good to see the area the school was in, how safe it felt, the type of campus, the type of people that went there, etc. It’s not like we went to 100...maybe 20 or so? And often a few were covered each trip.
This was also totally the norm among my friends during junior year. I didn’t think it was weird!

I have a 10th grader. We visited a few schools recently so he could start to get a feel of what different campuses offer and how the atmosphere is at small, medium and large schools. Now he can start researching colleges based on the kinds of school he liked best. Then we will visit schools he’s interested in to see how he feels about the campus, the town and the dorms.
I ended up MISERABLE at college because I did so little research. I’d like my kids to be better prepared if possible. It helps that my kids travel a lot for hockey because we’re often in or around college towns and can do quick stop by visits. My son already ruled out a very prestigious college he always thought he’d like to go to based on the fact that the town it’s in is a complete dump.

Re: College commitment day

I had this in high school in the 90's because I went to a college prep school. All 200 of my graduating class went to a 4 year college, except one at the time went to Nassau.

I visited a lot of schools my junior year. I had no idea where I wanted to go. I was thinking outside of buffalo at one point. During my visit at the school, I hated the town and school feeling basically deserted.

I got homesick my first year and transferred home to Long Island and commuted to a school I never looked at.

I visited schools to see if I liked it enough to even apply. All the schools look great on their websites, catalogs, etc... But you just don’t know until you see it in person. Why waste time and money on an application, and then more time and money visiting a school that you realize you don’t like?

All of my friends visited schools before applying. It just seemed like the logical thing to do.

DH and i plan to go this route with our kids. I would rather spend $100 on an application and then visit if they’re accepted, than spend $500 to travel to a school they may not get into.

I visited schools while i was in high school, but the furthest was Albany, so they were all day trips. Actually, I visited Maryland, GW, and Delaware, but my grandmother lived in Maryland so we did it when we were already visiting her. But I basically knew I wanted to stay home anyways.

But what if you don’t end up liking any of them?? Or do people apply to a ton more schools now? I only applied to 6.

ETA: I also had a very good idea of what schools I would be accepted to, so I wasn’t just applying willy-nilly. I had 4 schools I was pretty sure about, a totally safe option, and a reach.

Same here. We didn’t spend hundreds visiting either - we visited friends and really only stayed in hotels twice. We visited 10-12 schools.
