She doesn't need a lecture about the cart, so you don't leave your cart (neither do I) but I KNOW I do OTHER things that aren't perfect and annoy other people so I am not going to get on some pedestal and lecture her on the cart unless I am PERFECT in every aspect of my life. I am not.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it OK for ANYONE to approach you, screaming like a lunatic and making you feel threatened or unsafe! I repeat, under NO ORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES is it OK to become completely unhinged in public and approach, scream or intimidate another person. I am sorry that happened to you and I am glad it didn't become anything more serious. Next time, just drive away. Luckily, he didn't escalate it more.

When people harp on her not putting her cart back and make excuses for another person being threatening and screaming at a woman over a CART is where the real issue lies.

Thank you so much for understanding my point and posting this. I never thought coming here I would get a lecture about the cart. I’m still very upset and am trying to grasp how to handle a threatening sutuation should I be unlucky for it to happen again. This caught me offguard.

It’s taken me a long time to get to a point where I am aware of my own shortcomings, flaws and imperfections and try to react with compassion instead of judgement. I still don’t get this right all the time by a long shot and it is a continual work in progress. It always will be, I have to make a conscious effort to respond with compassion. Point is, I am still not perfect by any means so who I am I to point out what you did wrong, as if I do nothing wrong myself. Nothing productive comes of making you feel bad for whatever teeny tiny part of this you "MAY" have played. Why would I want to do that to someone? What is gained? Who am I to point out someone else's shortcomings, like I don't have my own. The bottom line is the mans behavior is not excusable. I am glad you are safe!!!!! Sorry you were approached and are still shaken up by this incident. It must have been scary, as it was certainly unwarranted. To answer your question, Id stay IN the car, windows up and phone ready. If you really felt immediately and or physically threatened, Id lay on the horn and tell him you are about to call the police unless he steps away from your car immediately.

Op I’m sorry the man scared you. He should t have done that and I’m glad you are ok

You're not allowed to say that. You must live in la la land.
The part where you said the guy was wrong and you are sorry he scared her will be ignored because apparently caring about your vehicle that you spend hard earned money on not getting dings and scratches and looking like shit makes you in la la land and not in touch with the real world.

Just leave your cart against someone's bumper... it's fine. It's a first world problem. We have to walk too much in a day as it is. Why add to it?

I'm not pointing to you or anyone specifically, but there's at least one post where someone didn't even mention the crazy guy (who the majority of people agreed was wrong) and just had to point out how they would've just returned the cart in the first place and then essentially name called her for not doing so. Come on, was that really necessary? She's already admitted she was wrong but there are some people that are really making it personal. The sad fact is for every one person that returns the cart there are like ten that don't Chat Icon and it does suck. Unfortunately dings and scratches are part of car ownership. A branch can fall off a tree and hit your parked car in the driveway or in a parking lot. There's really no safe guarding it. It sucks but it's reality. What they should do is do away with carts completely and just make everyone carry all their groceries instead lol whatever you can fit in your arms is what you get Chat Icon just as punishment for not returning carts... Make people really think long and hard if they need the 48 pk of the 2 ply toilet paper lol Then they don't have to pay the cart corral guy lol... or everyone just online shops which will shut down the last 3 stores that are left that Amazon hasn't crushed yet anyway lol. But then the UPS delivery guy could ding your car when he delivers your loot so there really is no way out Chat Icon

Hey Aldi tried by making you put a quarter in to get the cart and you only get that quarter back if you return the cart to the the corral!
But a quarter was not a big enough incentive.
They should have done a couple of bucks. LOL

Oh and a LI parking lot horror story... As a kid we had gone grocery shopping at the King Kullen in Levittown while visiting my Aunt. We must have gotten to a parking spot before this woman and she comes yelling like a nut that we took her spot. Keep in mind this is a family - Husband, Wife, and two young kids. Here's this woman getting irate over a parking spot. Ok, whatever. We go in, do our shopping...when we come out our entire car is covered in MUSTARD! I was I think 8 and terrified.

So here's the thing- like I said earlier in the thread- the VAST majority of Americans could use a few extra steps in their life. Trust me.
So unless you are disabled, elderly or have a medical condition, I don't get the circling and circling to get a spot super close to the store.
Park farther away and walk. Your body will thank you, your car has less chance of getting hit by these rogue carts or dinged by others parking on top of you, and you won't have to fight and argue with others who "took your spot".

Chat Icon YES!

That's probably why I'm the weirdo that parks the farthest away. I always thought it was because I wanted exercise and had no patience - I was probably traumatized as a kid over "mustard". Chat Icon

That sucks that he yelled at you and called you names like that. I prob would've rolled down the window a bit (like you did), seen what he had to say and then kept it moving. I prob would've said sorry and that's it.

If I can put a shopping cart back while push it and pushing a stroller simultaneously, there’s no reason why it could not have been put back in its place. It irks me! A woman unloaded her groceries and left the cart in an empty space and I rolled down my window and said she was inconsiderate. She was embarrassed and hopefully will think twice next time.

Anyway..... that guy was a nutcase. His blood pressure will probably get to him. Don’t let it ruin your day. If he was that upset, he would’ve handled it better.

You won’t be upset about this in a few weeks. Enjoy the time with your mom Chat Icon

I am seriously baffled by the people saying she should have left a note on the car she hit. She clearly stated that she did not realize that the cart hit a car until the psycho told her. So, she should have got out of her car and face a screaming lunatic to put a note on the car? Yeah, that is a hard no for me. Some of you are just being plane ridiculous.

Thank you. I thought it was just me. I only was looking for thoughts on how someone else would have handled this in reference to someone suddenly putting you in a threatening situation. I was upset I even opened my window. I in no way thought of or could go and leave a note. No regrets either. And how nice leaving my contact info for him to grab. When we left, he was still screaming f ng b$tch as we drove away. It honestly is unbelievable this happened but I know there are miserable unstable people out there.

Okay serious question. What about a store like shoprite where the are no corrals and they have a full time cart person to collect them? I always walk my cart to the front of the store bc i'm afraid the cart won't stay if i leave it but it seems like they intend for you to leave the carts in the lot? It annoys me they don't just have the corrals.

Maybe if the store posts unedited selfies on the customer's social media it would be enough incentive to return carts? Chat Icon

OP you're right about this lunatic having access to your contact info if you had left a note! He probably would've stalked you! I wonder if the cart even hit a car or if this raging loon just pretended it did so he could pick a fight?? I put nothing past people. Did you notice if the cart rolled away?

I feel like every store I go to there's always a shopping cart attendant collecting the carts from the lot and the corrals and wheeling them back to the store.

The guy was a lunatic. I HATE dings in my car. But s*it happens. Even if you put your cart in a corral EVERY time, you will get dings because people in general are inconsiderate. Including me. I will put in corral if convenient, but not always.

He was 100% unforgivable. You are 100% forgivable. At least in my mind.

You're telling me everyone on here puts the cart back in the holder or all the way back to the store every single time they shop?! Sorry- I don't believe it! Who is leaving all these carts out in between cars and on the grass in every single LI parking lot I have ever been to my entire life? This holier than thou crap is ridiculous!

OP- I am shocked too. A- at that lunatic's behavior, and B- by the way you are being treated here. I would delete the post too. This is really over the top.

As for how you reacted, don't be too hard on yourself! You and your poor mother were in shock. Next time, just drive away from the screaming maniac. I am so sorry that happened to you, and you did nothing wrong.

Chai77- Thank you very much for this. I really appreciate your post. Im shocked too! I am deleting post now.

To the responses, I probably find at least 10 carts sitting in each parking lot daily. I was shocked at how this turned into some crime I commited for not bringing my cart to the right spot vs being verbally attacked at my car and terrified. I didnt know there was a law in place in reference to these carts. This is really amazing. If I understand correctly, I should have stayed there instead of getting me and my older mom out of there, find exactly where my cart landed with this guy standing there continuing on his rant, walk right by him and leave all my personal contact info on someones car for him to have access to and Im in the wrong for not. The only thing I question now is posting this on here. I think I handled this as best I could. Putting aside how startled I was by him pounding on my window when I was looking the other way, this man was cursing at me while leaning at my car. I was terrified. Was just looking for insight on how to handle his verbal attack while in complete fear as this was not something I ever encountered before. Instead I got told how wrong I was for not returning a cart and not walking back in this crazy guys path to leave a note. At one point I thought he was going to punch my mom. Thats how bad it got. Nothing, even not properly returning your shopping cart, justifies approaching someone while in their car and verbally attacking them to the point they are in fear and feel threatened. I literally wont go to that parking lot again as it upset me that much thanks to some miserable crazy person. Next time Im in a parking lot and see all the carts everywhere, I will think iof the responses on here and chuckle. I just thank God this situation didn’t escalate further and I got us out of there.

I'm sorry you feel attacked. I really think this is everyone's way of flaming each person who has ever blocked a spot with their cart, or left a cart loose and it caused damage to their car. Especially if you yourself has brought them back in the pouring rain, with or without kids, etc.

I wanted to comment again to explain to you how my thought process went when reading your post.

I read and replied to your post right away yesterday and immediately felt terrible for you that you encountered that lunatic, thinking WTF is wrong with that guy. I'm glad she got out of there OK. but then almost immediately following that feeling, I felt aggravation about the cart! And couldn't help but say something. Even though you had already admitted you knew you were wrong. It was almost like I needed to say something because I say something out loud to Nobody every time I see a cart loose, or sitting at my bumper even though I'm 2 spots from the corral. I felt infuriated as if you were the one who left it there last time I got out of Target!

It's not fair to "blame" you, one single person, for all the people who do this - but it was impossible to not say anything at the time of the reply. I am guessing others may have also felt that way? I don't know. Won't speak for them. But honestly - I am sorry you felt attacked by these responses and I hope I didn't make you feel that way with mine. I didn't mean it in that way. Chat Icon

Chat Icon

this is awesome, well done and really big of you (and in case that comes off as condescending, its not! I promise). I hope I am able to reflect on, own my own actions/words and apologize like this when I first say something without consideration that my words/actions may be unnecessary or hurtful to someone, especially if they are already feeling vulnerable. LOVE THIS!

I’ll bite

You in NO WAY deserve what the guy did

He was wrong. I would have been scared too

Now in saying that

I also think your wrong for not putting the cart back

Everyone is talking about this cart shaming etc

But what really is the reason it’s not put back. I get the 99 yr old woman maybe. I will even take the woman with all her kids.

But just as a general. If you are able. Why isn’t it put back

I see so many times on this board people talk about society going to shit. Entitled people. Etc. And I don’t mean you op

I’m talking how it always comes up. Well isn’t this a part of it. There is a spot for carts. You are physically able to put it back. Should t it go back

OH you and your snark Chat Icon

Yes, if people are going to criticize the OP for not returning her cart to the proper corral lives in mothereffing LA LA LAND because I would bet that you and every other person on this thread has at sometime or another has not returned the cart to the proper corral but also didn't have a man screaming at you for it.

LOL I can't help it. It's an affliction of mine! I can't control my snark! Chat Icon

I just saw it a different way, I saw everyone saying yes this man was wrong and psycho and what the eff and that was scary- BUT- you probably should return your cart.
I don't think she was as attacked as some are making it out to be, but maybe I am reading it wrong.

Yeah, it definetely became about what I DID in reference to the cart. I am not on here often enough and was shocked. Im still visiting and refuse to go back to that parking lot. Its also someone who lives local and I worry about my mom now. This has become a big deal. Nobody should have to be subject to what I went through no matter what, especially over a cart. I have four marks on my car from Trader Joes and Walmart. I am always careful. It was one of the very few days that I didnt bring the cart back and boy did I pay. So not right what happened to me no matter how anyone wants to justify. It’s called harassment.
