Kindergarten Class Size

I went to my district's Kindergarten informational last night and someone asked about class size.

I am not on LI, but I am interested to here what your K class size is. Do you have a teacher's aide or assistant in the room?

I asked on a mom FB group for my area as well.

Thank you.

Re: Kindergarten Class Size

DD's K class was about 24 children and they had an aide.

All the K classes in our school have aides.

Re: Kindergarten Class Size

In NJ, class size must be under 25 kids. My kids had 20 children in their kindergarten classes. There is a main teacher and an aid for 1/2 the day.

I taught Kindergarten for years. My smallest class was 19 (absolute dream!...and only happened once) and my largest was 29 (NOT a dream!). I would say my average was 25. I had an aide for half the day. The other half I was solo.

Ranged ~20-21 kids with one teacher. One year there was an aide for half a day as one child had an extreme food allergy.

DS 1 was 18 and DS 2 was 19. Both had a teacher and a TA who was in the class the whole day (except for their lunch hour).

my son is in second grade now and he has 17 kids in his class... its the same school, so his kindergarten was about the same.... definitely less than 20 kids. They have a full time aid in the kindergarten classes, too...

My son is special ed. His class is never more than 15 with multiple aides. But for gen ed, the class size is generally around 20 and the number of classes changes from year to year depending on incoming students. The year my son was in K there were a total of 6 K classes including spec ed.

My DS class has 24 kids. They have a reading teacher that comes in for part of the day everyday -- but i dont know about an aid.
My son told me yesterday they have a student teacher in the room now too -- i was thrilled to hear that.

You can have up to I think 26. My DD class size was I think about 20 when she was kindergarten she did not have an aide. Some classes had classroom aides others didn’t. ( not talking about assigned Aides that come with an I EP)

Kindergarten Class Size

When living out on LI, my dd had 26 kids in her K class with 1 teacher and an aide. She now has 18 down here in NC for 1st grade and still 1 teacher and an aide. I’m so happy it’s smaller. K class was chaos and she gets more attention now with less kids.

Re: Kindergarten Class Size

The class sizes in our district our typically 20-24 students... 22/23 is about the average. We sometimes have outlier years/classes where we have 18 or 19 at the low end, and 25 at the high end, but it's not typical.

When my DS (now 4th grade) was in kindergarten, there were 20 students in his class. I know that the kindergarten classes in his school this year each have 22 or 23 students.

Usually 2 of the 5 kindergarten sections is an ERR class (extra resource room, which is our district's version of an inclusion class), and they will have a lot of aides in the classroom. But even the non-ERR K classes have kindergarten aides (one aide) for part of the day (like in the 10-1 window, mid-day).

The K classes in my DS’s school this year are 22 and 23. One class is the ENL class so that teacher is basically alone all day unless the ENL teacher pushes in for ELA and math. The other K class is the ICT class and they have an aide for most of the day (she leaves after lunch). The ICT teacher pushes in for ELA and math so at times there could be 3 adults in that room.
Big classes for little kindergarteners IMO.

25 can be typical. But more than that, no. I've never seen a K class in NY lower than 18. So I guess I'm saying 18-25 kids in each class.

My daughters kindergarten has 24 kids and one aide. There are two k classes and they both have 24 kids, if more kids registered they were going to be placed in a different school.
