School Assembly Ideas

So I am the cultural arts chair for the elementary school with a friend. We booked all our for this year last year and it's that time to meet up again for the 2019 -20 assemblies.
I got some great ones from you guys last year including Hip Pickles and Jester Jim (he's coming in June). Hip Pickles did the Dec winter show.
It's for 1st - 5th graders.
PTA board has lots of rules. Can't show the same show twice in 5 years and has to have 1 charector building, a holiday, but not holiday type show, etc.
Any ones you'd recommend? Kids loved?
Fun?

Thanks!

We do Hollyrocks, which is an interactive game show and the kids LOVE it. We have had authors come in, my favorite was David Adler of the Cam Jansen series. We also had this basketball dribbler guy (forgot his name) and the kids went nuts for him. We also do grade specific and do the Trial of Goldilochs for our 5th graders and it is the highlight of the year for them.

National Circus Project?

Is this the one that comes in for a week and does the show on Friday? I have heard it’s super expensive for them to come in. Is that true or is this something else?

Re: School Assembly Ideas

I'm Cultural Arts chairperson this year (and I did it last year). Here are some good ones I did (all were approved via Nassau County BOCES Arts in Ed):

Don't Press Send - an internet safety/cyber civics program (they do an evening presentation for parents). So worthwhile!

Parents for Megan's Law - They do age appropriate workshops for kids (K-3 has a different program than 4-6), and a parent presentation.

We just had the Islanders come do a free assembly on teamwork - the players don't come; it's Sparky the Mascot and player reps, but it was fun. Every kid got an Islanders folder, pencil, stickers.

The Freestyle Repertory Theater - it's an improv group - really funny, and they involve the kids (lots of audience participation).

Plaza Theatrical Productions - For Broadway Kids' show performances (musical theater)

Jared Campbell - Singer/songwriter (anti-bullying theme)

Simon Sez! for Listening and Respect! Really fun, I used for red ribbon week (was about not giving into peer pressure, respecting yourself and others, etc.)

Skydome Planetarium from Mobile Ed (planetarium show)

I'm having the STEAM museum from Mobile Ed later this year, but I've heard great things from other schools (hands-on exhibits)

I'm having Darren Sardelli - Laugh-A-Lot Poetry - for PARP; he will do a book signing.

Bash the Trash - this is great for Earth Day. Blends music/arts with science/STEM/environmental learning.

These are great. Actually having Skydome come in April for the next assembly and We did Simon Says a couple of years ago. Board doesn't want the same assembly within 5 years Chat Icon
I'll look into the others. If you need any ideas I have a bunch too since I did last year as well and chose for this year. The board is tough! LOL

Earlier is better, for some of the popular ones. And there are ones that are "in demand" for certain times of year (for Field Day, Red Ribbon Week, etc.).

I've met with the principal and AP right before school starts to map out a general idea for dates. Not exact dates for everything, but we know we always have an assembly during Red Ribbon Week, PARP week, for Field Day (which is a set date). So we will look at the weeks we know we need an assembly and see if there are any dates that don't work. Then we look at other times of year that may be good for assemblies.

In our district, we have a district meeting for the Cultural Arts PTA reps for all 5 schools, and we discuss what was good last year, what didn't work well, if the district has any input (e.g., this year they wanted every school to have some kind of drama/theatre workshop and performance).

Once I have all of that info, I try to sit down in September/October and book as much as I can for the year. It's harder the first year, but it gets easier if you can stay in the position a second year, because I carried over some ideas that I ran out of time/money to do!

But I would do as much as possible upfront, especially for your key assemblies. Then you can always fill in a few extras if the budget and time allows.

Other ones that have gotten good feedback from past years in our school, or other schools in our district, are:

The Art of Chinese Dance

The Woodlands Indian Experience - Native Americans from our Region (they bring a teepee, long house, etc)

Petra Puppets (we had one for Red Ribbon Week - It's Alive!-- about the human body - but they have a reading and math one, too)

Story Pirates -

Christopher Agostino's StoryFaces (Agostino Arts)

The Brain Challenge game show is always popular

The BMX Bike show

Cultivating Kindness Richard Specht

The Mad Science Programs
