Our district does not offer Pre-K.
The vast majority of people in our district do private Pre-K. There is a free U-Pre-K but it's limited to 40 spots and takes surrounding towns, too.

It’s Pre-K, not babysitting. I think 3 hours is more than enough for that age. Our district has AM and PM sessions to accommodate more kids. Does your daycare provide a Pre-K curriculum?
I agree with this.
My daycare has a play based approach and I like it a lot. These kids will spend the next 20 years in school - I don't think there is a need to real schooling until Kindergarten and even then I think they should allow for kids to be kids.
I see some of my friend's kids have 20 minutes of HW to complete with a 3 or 4 year old and I personally think that is ridiculous.

Many many districts offer it. It’s just not FT. These kids are only 4!!!
Honestly the reason why NYC offers free universal Pre-K is to bridge the gap for the huge amount of children that enter kindergarten in the DOE schools not knowing basic information (letters, numbers, shapes, colors). If half the kids in your child’s class didn’t have these skills, everybody would suffer. It levels the playing field so everyone has a better experience.

My district does not offer UPK at all.
But I agree I dont get home until after 7pm. Full day pre-k wouldnt help me much.

We have 8 sections of half day and 1 section of full day. The full day is a lottery. We currently don't offer busing but next year we will be offering it again. My girls all did 1/2 day and went to a sitter afterwards.

Honestly, for me the daycare Pre K was ideal.
I didn't have to take her out of the environment she'd been in since birth.
I didn't have to worry about some strange sitter shuttling her around.
I didn't have to worry about her being shuttled around period.
I didn't have to worry about a sitter getting sick, needing time off, flaking out.
It was a great program too. The people doing her K eval kept asking what Pre K she went too because she was so prepared.

I live in NYC and full day prek 4 is offered with aftercare as well
Next year there will be full day prek 3 is a lot of districts as well. I don't know if they will be in aftercare as well.

I think the point the other poster was trying to make is that there’s no true need for full day pre k. In the vast majority of children, it’s developmentally inappropriate. NYC does it to help bridge socioeconomic gaps. Those gaps don’t exist in most LI districts.

I love our daycare, too. But they are in Queens and switch to UPK for the 4s and being from LI, we're not eligible.  It's so damn hard!!

My district does offer it - everyone can attend half-day, full-day is available for a price. We're both working parents, though, so our kids go to the before-care programs at their schools in addition to the full-day pre-k program for my 4-year old. Essentially he is in a school building from 7-4 daily - he loves it, we love it and everyone is happy.

Yes, and it’s silly to say that children being unprepared for kindergarten is a city problem. I’m sure there are children on LI (or anywhere outside the city) who are not being taught the basics at home.

Wow. I sent/send my kids to a wonderful daycare where they have a full-day including increased structure/learning as they get older. I hadn't realized it was developmentally inappropriate. Best I look into that.

pre-k poll
Yes we have full day but it is by lottery and there is a surcharge for it. Half day is free is and offered to all. But this year there are 3 day full day classes and 2 half day sections. Before and after care is available too, but that costs extra.

School isn't what it was when we were kids. When my son was in K (in 2012) the principal made a speech that what we did in third grade is now done in K.
Your child does run the risk of being behind if they do not go to PreK. They do. Will they catch up? Most likely yes. But they will be behind.

Agree.
DD is doing stuff in 3rd that I didn't do until 6th.
It's a whole new world.
And they aren't doing advanced math or anything crazy in Pre K
It's pretty basic stuff.
And they make it fun

I should have phrased it differently, and it’s more of an issue I have with the school system as a whole right now. I believe the way kinder is now is developmentally inappropriate also, so I’m sorry.

ITA and I am a HS teacher! I find it interesting how we’re pushing kids to know all this stuff so early and they’re still at the same place by the time they get to HS so what’s the point?!?!?
My sister literally told me her daughter needs extra help cause she can’t read yet. She just turned 5....

Our district does not have UPK. I currently send DD to a catholic school that has a full day nursery program with before and after care. I also will sign her up for next year for pre-k as well. I just signed her up at a daycare for the summer (If I can avoid camps for now, I will since they cost an arm and a leg).
My BIL has UPK in his district but it is only 1/2 day and they have to send their kid to daycare for the other half of the day.
