OP, I would love to go to a communion where I wasn’t forced to eat penne ala vodka and chicken franchese and stare at those hideous party city cross balloons, all in the name of the “theme” being communion.
ITA. And for anyone saying a Communion is a sacred event- so is a wedding. But so many people have themes and color schemes. I mean she's not having her kid wearing a sombrero on the altar. 
True but the suggestion of a cross (in essence a CRUCIFIX which is perhaps the most sacred symbol in Catholicism) as a pinata just goes to show that people really have no idea about what this sacrament means and the religion behind it.
(Not directing any of this at the OP of course, that wasn't her idea)

We had our lunch for DD's Communion at an Italian restaurant. that doesn't mean we had Raviolis in the shape of Jesus, kwim?

The piñata, I agree, is too much.
But some cacti and colorful tablecloths? I just don’t see an issue with that.

Mexico in and of itself is extremely religious and Catholic; I am sure there are ways to incorporate the religious aspect in non-offensive ways. Like the movie Coco. I think you just need to find the right balance, I would add in some Mexican folk art crosses so the religious element isn't lost.

I don't see why you can't serve the Mexican food but not have a "Mexican theme" to the party. We had my daughter's at my house with all real BBQ food from a local pit master but didn't make it a "BBQ theme". We just did pretty teal and purple balloons and teal tablecloths. I just kinda agree that the party is about the sacrament and not a theme

Do it. I am telling you, my best friend did it and it was great. Her DS still wore the white suit, everyone looked nice, but it was a lot of fun

Mini weddings, expensive dresses to make the girls look like mini child brides, and then never in church again after the big party is over.
The behavior of people in church for the communions shows me that most of them haven't been in one in years and probably never will be again until the next big "party"
But to each their own.

I have never heard of candy tables(unless for favors) or magicians type things at communions being a “norm”. I don’t think “communion” is a theme either. We will be having lasagna, chicken and probably decorations that may include religious emblems such as a cross, I hope my guests will not be dissapointed.
I think Mexican food and some subtle colorful decor is fine, I really mean I wouldn’t take it too far like Cross piñatas and a Mariachi band.

I'm all for serving Mexican food, sounds delish, but I would not go for the all out Cinco de Mayo theme as it just seems a little tacky and out of place for a communion celebration. That being said, it's a really cute and fun theme for a party so maybe table that idea for his birthday!

I did the same thing for my daughter who's Communion was on 5/3 which was a Saturday evening mass.
She loved it and people don't really care one way or the other.
She was dancing on a table in the backyard and we had the pool open and heated. It was a fun party.
ETA: I did not do a Cinco De Mayo theme as in there were no decorations or pinatas. It was just the food.

I agree. This all makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t really get tying in a Mexican cultural victory with a celebration of a Holy sacrament. I think it’s also a little confusing to a second grader who went to religious education and learned all their prayers to achieve this sacrament.
It really doesn't take away from the sacrament at all. She is still celebrating the sacrament and will hopefully continue to take communion during regular mass. Everyone celebrates differently...some have huge formal affairs and some have small family dinners...they are all a celebration of the sacrament.

I feel like every spring there’s 15 posts on here asking for entertainment ideas for communion parties.
I’m sure your party will be lovely. I was just trying to get across the point that we don’t have to be cookie cutter when it comes to our celebrations. If you want lasagna and crosses, great. I love lasagna. I just don’t understand why an idea that isn’t the “norm” is attacked. There is nothing “sacrilegious” about plopping a cactus on a table at a communion party.
