Believing in Santa, age?

Spinoff to the news article about the substitute teacher and Santa ...

At what age now a days are kids still believing in Santa up until? (Sure, we all still believe but what’s the magic age?)

In discussion with some friends with older kids it seems like kids are believing much longer now then when we were kids which is wonderful really.

My almost 10 year old is a believer - how much longer do I have to cherish the innocence of the magic of the season?

My daughter is 11 and still believes. Or at least she is a good pretender. Honestly, if she confronts me, I won't ever admit it! My son has special needs and is almost 20! He still believes!! Not bursting his bubble Chat Icon

I agree, I was floored when my friend said her almost 10 year old still believes.

I found out when I was 8. I asked my mother to tell me the truth and she did. Apparently it was a running joke among the class moms that we were all so old to still believe.

Re: Believing in Santa, age?

My 7 & 8 year olds figured it out this year! The 7 year old had the idea last year (at 6) and discussed with her brother.

They got the tooth fairy first... and then applied it to Santa. They ask me for confirmation... but I just ask them what they think. They do have enough sense to know to keep it from their cousins and baby sister.

My mom was a third grade teacher and she said that was typically the age.

by 3rd grade teacher was a nun and was a little mean to us, and basically gave it all away to the class. A few kids knew (like me- youngest of 4, i don't remember believing lol my siblings probably told me), but others were in tears. She said we were too old to believe in that.

I personally think it's amazing that so many older kids believe! my cousins believed until they were around 11 or 12 I think

My nephew is 9 and still believes. His mom said he’s starting to ask questions but he showed us where his elf was and was super excited by it today.

My daughter has been questioning and she is almost 10. But she is questioning me in a way where I can tell she really doesn’t want it confirmed. I think she’s just playing along as long as she can!

I asked my dad when I was 7 and he told me the truth.

I think age 10 was the year I stopped believing, because my cousin told me. But I think that was considered old back then!

My kids are not at that age yet however I know my coworker had a relative who was going into middle school and still believed- so I'm guessing around 12?. His mother decided to tell him because she didn't want him to be ridiculed for still believing.

My 6 year still seems to believe but she has been questioning a lot of things this year. I'm afraid our elf on the shelf might be the reason for her doubt, because she's always asking why he doesn't blink at all and why he just looks like a toy. I hope she will still believe for another 2 or 3 years, at least for the sake of her 2 year old brother. I'm so worried she'll figure it out and spoil it for him!

My oldest figured it out at 7 and a half. He noticed the tag on the back of the Elf on the shelf and the whole Santa thing unraveled from there.

I thought most kids figure it out by 7 or 8 years old when they start to notice and question more.

This is one of the reasons I don't do the elf! I feel like once kids start to doubt the elf, they start to doubt Santa.

My son is in the 6th grade and just turned 11 in October and still believes! I love it. He also still believes in the Elf's magic.

Same.

My oldest DD believed at that time too as far as I know. She’s 13 and in 8th now and the jig is up...although she’s never actually asked and I’d never tell her that Santa doesn’t exist anyway...because he does!

I have to say though that I’m very surprised that kids believe as long as they do, especially in today’s day and age. I always thought by 2nd/3rd grade it would be over.

My son is in 6th grade and he does not believe. He started questioning in 4th, and didn't believe last year in 5th.

My SO's son is in 5th and he strongly believes.

My son now helps with the elf and stuff, which he really likes.

Believing in Santa, age?

MY DD is 6 1/2 and believes with all of her little heart. This weekend we went to see Santa at Roosevelt Field and at one point he got up to go to the restroom (or so we thought), and then 5 or so minutes later a brand new Santa came back. The woman behind us said "oh wow, they switched him", and my DD heard but didn't really realize what was going on. Or, at least I hope.
I did see her look at a picture of him that they had up (the one who left) and she was kind of looking at the pic, then the new Santa, then the pic, then the new Santa.

Re: Believing in Santa, age?

And who said Santa was not real???

I tell my kids the same thing every year... You believe in what your heart tells you. Use your imagination and it will take you to places you have never been before. If you feel it in your heart than chances are that its very real for you.

And I walk away. Don't know how much longer it's going to work but my oldest is 11 and still believes.

Yep. We cut down on all the Santa’s... but they do get it fast that the Santa they see isn’t the real one (They look different and mine pointed out fake beards). I told them of course, real head Santa is super busy... but they logically figured it out (too easy for parents to get presents and hide them under the tree when time comes). They looked super excited to see Santa on polar express ride... but then realized and were like... ummm mom... it’s all a show, huh? Be sure not to tell the little cousin. They like the pretend... but I think they got it in their hearts. It’s the same in Disney.
They really got the fact that they were dressed characters.

What got me was when DH joked and said the tooth fairy forgot him this year when he had his wisdom tooth pulled and my DS took a quarter out of his piggy bank and snuck it under his dad’s pillow. I’ve read that it’s taken as a “coming of age”.

Lol. Makes me cry though to read Polar Express! It is sad, but we focus on the different magic.

My son is 11 and in Middle School. We sat him down before school started to have "the talk" with him and while we did, we also told him about Santa. We felt it was time and we didnt want him to be the kid in MS who was with all his friends and was like "well, Santa got me...". That would be mortifying for someone in MS and Im sure he'd never hear the end of it. So, we told him and when we did, he admitted hes known he wasnt real for like the last 3 years and just played along bc he didnt want to hurt our feelings.

My son is 10 and believes, my niece is almost 10 and believes as well. This will be the last year, so I am enjoying it.

Kids in his class told him Santa isn't real and that it the parents. He said he didn't care what they said because he still believes. Made me proud that he doesn't just follow the masses and isn't scared to be different from his peers.

My niece (in college now), admitted years ago that she told her parents she believed in Santa long after she knew, since she knew she'd get more and better presents if "Santa" brought them... Chat Icon Chat Icon
