What is going on lately
I’m so disgusted with the political climate of this country. Everyone is either sooo left or sooo right. There is no in between. I watched the hearings yesterday and after talking to people I can’t help but wonder if there were two different hearings going on because my “right” friends cane out feeling the exact opposite of my “left” friends. Do people watch/listen with open minds or do they watch waiting for clips/sound bites that they can use to take down the other side? It’s almost like brainwashing....on both sides

I'm sure you're right. There are times that I think I'd be open minded about what's going on, but then I hear about something bad Obama did and I brush it off or feel like he had good reason. I try to remind myself that, no - it's not all good that happened under his watch, but I don't think everyone stops to consider that the person their backing isn't in the right - especially when they're there to push a personal agenda.

It's impossible to be in the middle these days. I actually am in the middle but g*d forbid someone comes onto this board and posts something that is not so far to the left they are ostracized and berated. People can't even have an intelligent conversation anymore. It's sad actually and that is what is destroying this country more than anything else.

I agree with this 100% I am more conservative than liberal. I do lean liberal on more social platforms such as abortion/gay rights. But if you say anything on this board center or right you get destroyed.

To the PP who said they deactivated their FB acct ... I just unfollowed anyone who constantly posts politically. FB for me is an escape. I love looking at peoples pictures of their kids and pets, new home projects, recipe disasters and accomplishments, etc. Not the same ram down your throat political talk (right or left) I won’t give up my social media because of others. Just unfollow. It’s a beautiful option lol

I think it's worse on this site in particular, or on any online platform, because there is no tone of voice to go along with what you are saying, people don't give one another the benefit of the doubt because we don't actually know one another, and because it's easier to attack someone when you are hiding behind a keyboard.
I sometimes come on this board and laugh though - it shouldn't be called a "politics" board. Something like "Anti-Trump" or "Anti-Republican" would be much more appropriate. It's mainly just an area for left-minded people to come on and congratulate eachother on how intellectually superior they are to anyone else who doesn't agree with them wholeheartedly.

I used to be very much "in the middle," too. That's impossible now. The administration itself is such an extreme. Either you're with them or you're not.

I'm not defensive at all.
In hindsight, I should have quoted a poster because my response was more about what others said after you (i.e. the complaint that the board is "anti Republican.")
Frankly, I only see a middle ground on very few issues. Gun control - I can debate the amount. Immigration - sure, there's gray area. But there aren't many others. Years ago I used to be a little more center left rather than left economically but since then I've read too many bipartisan data sets and articles that describe where long term economic growth stems from and how trickle down economics doesn't work.
There have been many threads devoted to those who are anti Trump on the board. People should feel free to start others as they see fit if they want to discuss a different view.

This is how I feel. I feel that I can't show my right side at all when it comes to foreign policy and guns. My feelings have also shifted left a bit. *shrug*

Me too. I'm actually scared to speak my views to anyone other than my family and friends who are me and lean more to the conservative side because I'm sure that I'll get flamed to high heavens.
Honestly the political climate in this country right now is downright scary.

I find it hard to believe that anyone on a LI board feels they can't openly support trump. Have you not noticed the bumper stickers, lawn signs, flags, etc that decorate this island? I don't think I've met anyone here IRL who DOESN'T support trump.

First, our current administration isnt helping the divide they are making it worse.
Don’t complain that you cant come here and post. Thats what this board is here for.
I am continually asking for people who support trump to explain why. I truly want to understand and have dialogue. I cannot ask people IRL because its not okay to discuss politics for some crazy reason.

I have no intention of bashing your opinions on the positive things you think this administration is doing (as I said - that wasn't already in motion during Obama's term). I'm not well versed enough to know the minor things that go on in politics and I'm genuinely interested in why people that aren't racist, etc still support him.

I actually never said I supported him or said that I had anything to contribute that he has done that is positive. I am a very middle of the road type of person and was open to either candidate. If I had to say some positive things that he's done is to get rid of poorly negotiated trade agreements and to open discussions with N. Korea.

I don’t think there are very many die hard trump supporters on here. The only did hard trump supporters I know on Long Island are over the age of 70 and I think it’s a generational thing. There are people who didn’t think that we were going to revert to pre civil rights era ideology with trump as president and I’m pretty sure quite the opposite has happened. And no one that I know is withOut healthcare despite the predictions on this site of people that knew people who would, with 100% certainty, DIE if trump was elected. Listen, I don’t like the guy. I don’t think very many people actually do but here and in real life if you dare say anything positive you must be a racist sexist pig.
