What would you do?
My daughter has two teachers and I have known both of them casually for a few years as my other child had them too. I found out that one of the teachers has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is going to undergo chemo.
I am not sure if she is going to tell the kids but she is going to miss some school and her appearance is going to change.
I am so sad for her as she is young and such a lovely person.
I have just found out about this and I am torn as to whether I should send her a quick email to show her support or not say anything. the problem is that I will see her at school but would not say anything on front of the kids.
I don't want to infringe on her private life but I dont know whether its worse to say something or nothing in this instance.
So what do you think - send a short email or say nothing?
Also is there anything that I could buy for her to maybe help her through this difficult time?
Thanks.

What would you do?
I'm a very MYOB kind of person but I would reach out and send an email letting her know you're thinking of her and to let you know if she needs anything.

What would you do?
I think it depends how you found out—it might upset her more to know if people are discussing it behind her back

Yes this. I am a VERY private person and I wouldn't want anyone to know. So it depends how you found out

This is a good point. I assumed either she or the school had informed the parents.
If that isn't the case, then no, I would not say anything.

Re: What would you do?
Good point. I heard from two different sources who thought I knew as they said everyone knows.

What would you do?
Unless you heard from the school or the teacher herself, I would not say anything.

This! I had a similar situation where the PTA president in the school had told me that a teacher I was close with (son had her for two years, I was class mom) was just told she was moving to a different school in the district. She thought I had already known. I did email the teacher offering my support and it turns out she was a bit upset that the cat was out of the bag so soon. (She actually was given choices on a different school or different position and hadn’t decided yet). Looking back I do wish I waited - she would have told me anyway in time. I should have given her more time to process it all. So sorry to hear about your teacher. I pray she will be okay.

I would wait until you pretty much know it is public knowledge. Everyone handles cancer diagnosis differently. Then a card with a hand written note, like "thinking of you" may be appropriate. An email would also be fine.

Re: What would you do?
in the past, i was always the one who would say something as soon as i found out... i wanted the person to know that i didn't hesitate and wanted to be there from the beginning.
over the years, i have found out THE HARD WAY that isn't always the best way.
i agree with others to wait until it's official.
i'll be praying for her.

Re: What would you do?
I would hate to be a teacher. It kind of bothers me the gossip that goes on about teachers. Oh this one is pregnant, oh that one is being moved to another school, oh that one's husband is leaving her, on this one had cancer. It's like their personal lives are fodder for all the gossip. It's like office gossip times 1000 because every student's parent wants to talk about your personal life amongst themselves.
