Updated AAP recommendations on rear-facing car seats

In the updated policy statement, “Child Passenger Safety,” and an accompanying technical report, to be published in the November 2018 issue of Pediatrics (published online Aug. 30), the AAP recommends children remain in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their seat. Previously, the AAP specified children should remain rear-facing at least to age 2; the new recommendation removes the specific age milestone.

The AAP recommends:
Infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their seat. Most convertible seats have limits that will allow children to ride rear-facing for 2 years or more.
Once they are facing forward, children should use a forward-facing car safety seat with a harness for as long as possible, until they reach the height and weight limits for their seats. Many seats can accommodate children up to 65 pounds or more.
When children exceed these limits, they should use a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle’s lap and shoulder seat belt fits properly. This is often when they have reached at least 4 feet 9 inches in height and are 8 to 12 years old.
When children are old enough and large enough to use the vehicle seat belt alone, they should always use lap and shoulder seat belts for optimal protection.
All children younger than 13 years should be restrained in the rear seats of vehicles for optimal protection.

Yes and nobody will pay attention to it just like now.
Everyone knows better.
It's so "annoying" to have them rear facing.
Their friends don't use boosters anymore at 5 so why should they?
Alllllll the excuses.
These need to be made laws and actually enforced.

Huge change
I've been laughed at for keeping my daughter who will be 3 in October rear facing still. The research is overwhelming for how much safer it is to rear face for longer!!!!

I agree. I've heard so many excuses from people. I just don't understand it. They will be so overprotective with stupid shit and then put their kids at risk with the car seat. I got eye rolls from just about everyone I know for keeping DS rear facing for so long. I know someone that doesn't even buckle the car seat if they're only going a short distance... f*cking idiots.

My little one is just over 3 years old and only 27lbs. Our car seat can rear face until 45lbs (or height is exceeded). She will be rear facing until kindy and she can complain about it all day all night if she wants (not that she does, because she only knows rear facing). Their little noggins are 5x safer rear facing. I'm far from a helicopter mom, or fear mongering in any way. In fact, I'm quite the opposite. But this is non-negotiable in our house

I say that all the time. People go bat shit crazy when they are pregnant, not eating sushi, cold cuts, not having a sip of wine, etc etc.
Then the baby is born and they take risks with their safety.
Makes zero sense to me.

Thank you so much for posting this. ....I just asked DH the other day when is it time to turn DD forward facing and he said at 2. I'm glad to now know she can stay rear facing. Do we need to be concerned about their legs touching the backseat?

No. There have been years of studies and real-world data taken, and the last time I checked, a few years ago, there were zero instances of a rear-facing kid breaking a leg because of touching the seat.
Even if they did break a leg, legs heal... forward facing spines not so much...

They can bend their legs and be perfectly comfy too.
Kids are very flexible, not like adults. LOL

Same. DD will be 3 in December. Not turning her any time soon. I don't know a single person who doesn't turn their kid immediately upon turning 2.
If you google "when to turn car seat" (even before the new recommendation) the first hit says at least 2 but as long as possible. Do people just see "2" and not read more? I don't get it.

I wish they would make it a law until at least 2 since most people don't even follow that. I'll never forget I showed up to my dd preschool when she was 3 and a mom said "oh my gosh she still sits rear facing her legs are getting crushed". I tried explaining why its safer but she insisted her ped had told her to turn her dd fwd facing at a year 
I saw it on good morning american this morning and shared a link to it to my Facebook and people I know commenting thought that its crazy. I don't get it I hear my child is 70% safer riding rear facing that is what I did. Why people are so resistant to doing it beyond me.
