Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI
This is heartbreaking..I am so, so sad for all involved. I honestly think it will turn out to be a simple fact of the 11 year old getting locked into the car and not able to get out for whatever reason.
I heard people say on TV that she was a friendly, talkative girl so the non verbal comment seems to be untrue.
If it only takes 10-15 mins to die from heat exhaustion in a car then I can easily see how you would not know where your 11 year old is for that period of time. I am a crazy person checking in on my kids ALL the time even if they are only upstairs but 10-15 mins is a very short period of time especially if they had just gotten in from running errands.

There are tons of scenarios that could have led to this; maybe she got out of the car and then went back in for some reason and accidentally got locked in and couldn't get out..
I'm wondering the same thing, if maybe she DID get out with everyone and then somehow wandered back out and went in the car on her own and got locked in or stuck somehow. Who knows. terrible.

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI
And I just saw an article that said the death is being investigated as a homicide but I really think that was a click bait of a headline because there were no real details in the article other than the homicide squad is investigating it, but I think that's routine.

I just refuse to judge another mother without anything more than basic information...accidents happen all the time and it is so easy to judge someone without knowing the story...I would hate to be in her shoes and hear the things people are saying when she hasn't even had time to grieve.

Yes, according to the news story I saw on TV this morning - it is routine and no foul play is suspected. I hope that it is nothing more than a tragic accident.

Girl dies in hot car on LI
Just awful. As a mom of a special needs 11 year old girl, I can totally see how the girl could get stuck in the car and then not know how to get out. Especially if she started panicking. I can not understand though how the mom or her other children can not know where her special needs child is for the amount of time it takes for her to die in that car. Having a special needs child is not the same as having a typical one and even if she is playing alone, there still needs to be a check in. Very sad.

The sad thing is we'll never really know. The mom may have thought the girl was with her, or she was only in the house for a minute when it was really 10, maybe she wandered back out to the car to get a toy...it's just a horrific tragedy.

They said on the news last night that it is routine for the homicide to investigate since it was a death not health related.

This is what I’m wondering - how long it takes to actually die in a hot car. No doubt it was VERY hot yesterday. But 10-15 mins seems kind of fast to me? I haven’t seen any additional details on this.

Yes I saw a video once where an officer sat in a hot car with the windows up and timed it and showed how hot the temps got inside the car and how he was affected. But I feel like he was definitely in that car for 10 minutes or more and he was still conscious when he got out. I have to look that up
ETA- these people were in the car for 27 minutes before they stopped the demo for safety reasons. They were all still conscious and speaking and the car was over 130 degrees inside.
Hot car demo

I feel like there is more to this story then being reported. I’m not judging but the whole thing is just odd.

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI
I am so sorry for the family. I could see it happening very quickly yesterday. It was 104 near me. Less than ten minutes would do it according to ABC the the temp outside yesterday. I think if the mom went in went to the bathroom, changed the baby, and then looked around and said where is DC, it could be that quick.

Just so tragic and preventable.
Even if she did try to get out, the child safety locks might have been on and she can't open the door from the inside anyway.

Because of this I had a conversation with my girls and went over some safety notes with them along with asking them questions of what ifs. I have child safety locks on the back doors but the front doors are not lock. I asked them what they would do in a situation like that and they all said they would go to the front and open the doors. My girls are 8 and 11. Do you put child safety locks on all your doors? I know it states the girls had special needs but I'm wondering if she thought about unlocking the drivers door. My prayers are with the family. I can't even imagine what they are all going through.

I don't use child locks at all. I hate them actually. DD is 8 now and she knows enough not to open the door while I'm driving. She's strapped into her booster in a seat belt, she isn't moving around the backseat freely anyway. I can see maybe using them with toddlers or something, but not at 8 years old. I find those things to be a huge hazard god forbid of something like this or getting trapped in the car in an accident or whatever.

I agree. I have a bad feeling (and I hope I'm wrong) that this might have been done on purpose.

I hate them as well but still have them on the back doors for safety reasons. With the way this world is going, I'm afraid some bored POS may open those doors and snatch my girls away. At least I know they won't be able to open those doors. Crazy to think that way but this world as gone nuts.

The regular locks will prevent that. I always keep my doors locked while driving. In fact when I put my car in reverse or drive, the doors lock automatically. Child safety locks mean you can't open the door from the inside. That scares me.

I had the same thought.
I wonder if it was somewhere in between. Not that she was trying to kill her, but something more like, the kids was misbehaving- so the mom told her to stay there untill she clamed down or the kid refused to come in & the mom didn't argue with her, figurig she'd come in later & forgot about the child locks & lost track of time, something like that.
