Jewish unveiling question

This is a weird question but my son asked the other day and I honestly don't know. My mom passed away recently and her unveiling is in October. My boys occasionally paint kindness rocks to leave around the community. My son was asking if we could paint one and leave it on my mother's stone. We leave rocks for my grandparents, but they have never been painted. I am not sure who else to ask as my mom would have been that person, but I also don't want to go against jewish "policy" for lack of a better word because that would have upset my mother. I know that in death everything is supposed to be equal, hence why we dress in shrouds etc. Not sure if this would make a difference.
Thanks so much!

Re: Jewish unveiling question

If it makes your son happy, then go ahead and let him paint a stone and leave it.
It's difficult enough for children to have to deal with death.

I've seen flowers left at Beth Moses.

My Sister (adult not child), but she leaves little things all the time on my Mom's stone....angel statues, engraved rocks. I am not the most religious person, but IMO don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I think it's fine. I don't believe there is any Jewish custom against using a painted rock. I think it's a sweet gesture from your children. I'm sorry for your loss.

Re: Jewish unveiling question

I am very sorry for your loss. I have never seen a painted rock at a jewish cemetery. But I am going to say if it makes your son feel better, and connected to his grandmother what a beautiful thing to do.

Re: Jewish unveiling question

It would be fine to leave a painted rock. Leaving rocks is a custom, not Halacha (Jewish law).
There is a synagogue near me that is selling rocks to put on graves as a fundraiser with their name and logo on it.
