North shore vs south shore

I grew up out of state and have lived both on the North and South Shore. Settled on the North Shore and MUCH prefer it, minus the beaches. The beaches on the North Shore are rocky and have no waves, not real beaches IMO.

We wanted larger property, have an acre, not sure you'd ever find that on the South Shore except for maybe way out East. I like the hills, the tress, going outside without seeing my neighbors or their houses from my back yard, it's much less congested. We also think it's much more scenic and visually appealing.

I'd say Plainview is slightly less congested than South Shore Nassau. As far as the people there, I always dreaded going to Fairway in Plainview due to the other customers. I said it was like a shopping cart demolition derby, people will run you over, push in front of you, just beyond rude. Sounds like that might extend beyond Fairway but that's my only experience.

eta- We talk constantly about moving off LI, so we're not the biggest fans.

North shore vs south shore

We are in I guess what one could consider central Nassau, but on the extreme west end. We are a 4 minute drive to the Queens border. We really only wanted to buy in the town we ultimately wound up in, because we wanted to stay very close to Queens. However, we did research and drive through other towns and we much preferred South Shore. We are big ocean beach people, liked the beachy vibe. Towns we were considering were Merrick, Bellmore, & Wantagh- south of Merrick Rd.

I grew up on the south shore but live on the north shore now. I like it better than the south shore. There is more space, more trees, hills instead of being flat. It doesn't feel congested. There are def times I'm driving around and it doesn't feel like I'm in Li anymore.

I grew up there. Great schools, central location, decent commute to the city. Definitely has a reputation as "Complain"view, but I think that of a great many towns on Long Island. If schools are a top priority, then go for it! I actually would recommend Old Bethpage, not too much of a difference, but a little more residential and less congested.

Re: North shore vs south shore

I grew up on the south shore and currently live on the north shore. I love where I live now more than any other south shore town. In general I find the north shore to be so much more beautiful architecturally and find there’s a much different vibe on the north shore.

That said, I wouldn’t look at it as one shore vs another. There are some south shore towns I’d prefer over certain north shore ones. There are specific north shore towns I’d never move to- even though yes, in general, I do prefer it out here by a huge margin.

I wouldn’t set up a north/south shore divide and just pick apart towns and see what you like. As far as the people, there are douchebags all over the place, they’re not just limited to one shore, or one town. The idea of that is pretty silly IMO.

Thanks guys. Staying on the south shore is not on the table. We would either move to Plainview or off LI. We don’t like where we live. We aren’t from LI so my question was to see if anyone mentioned any of the things we hated about the south shore applying elsewhere.

North shore, south shore, east, central, west ...at the end of the day it's Long Island.

Which means the ultimate in shit weather, high taxes for not a lot of services, terrible roads, insane amounts of traffic enough to make you want to hide in your house for the 3 months of nice weather we actual do get....

My advice- neither shore. Leave the Island!
That is my plan for the future.

I don't really see Plainview being any different from the south shore town I currently live in.

Yup! If I could I would move to SC. I have cousins that moved there (and TX, but TX is a little bit too much heat for me lol). They all say they would never move back.

North shore vs south shore

I grew up in the North Shore and lived on the south shore as an adult and now am mid island.

Plain view is midisland. I love the north shore but I have to say the south shore beaches are so much nicer. I love the Town of Babylon beaches. Some of the best on the island IMO so at this point I think DH & I would stay in TOB if we moved.

I work in Plainview and I mean this is a very nice way... plainview is a cluster fluck.... I HATE loathe and dispise it! I mean houses are nice. It’s very close to parkways but it’s dead center, no close beaches. I frequently go to eat in plainview and everyone is rude. Expect family bagel- they are great and know everyone in plainview! Overall, I hate plainview and I don’t even live here... that’s just my experience! But schools are good!

This is pretty hilarious because my brother in law works in Jericho/Plainview border and he says the same thing all the time!! Every time he goes out to get lunch he says everyone is a major dbag LOL.

This is just what he says - I am not familiar with the area so I cant say lol.

I didn’t want to say it but I live close so I would shop and eat in Plainview and had to stop cause everyone was nasty. They had zero respect for others out in public.

I actually don't work too far from Plainview and let me tell you, I feel like it's a breath of fresh air compared to where I live. At least in Plainview no one is screaming obscenities at other people and everyone is wearing a shirt. At least as far as I've seen.

Re: North shore vs south shore

We live on the north shore. I love the vibe on the north shore, it's beautiful, less congested, and the neighborhoods are more unique and individual in my opinion.

The only downside to the NS is the beaches. They aren't real beaches. But one of the few great things about living on LI is that you are never more than 30-45 minutes from a beautiful south shore beach.

I have lived on both shores and smack in the middle. We house hunted on both shores. What I loved about the north shore was how picturesque it was. The neighborhoods have character to them with windy, hilly streets. Properties were bigger, houses were bigger but taxes were pretty high too with that. The other thing, which is a blessing and a curse, is that it is so secluded. It's nice if you aren't leaving your town but DH and I travel all over for work and 20 minutes to a highway was just not appealing to us. And when Sandy came, I was in St. James and all of those gigantic trees were super scary to me. That neighborhood was destroyed by the trees.

We ended up on the south shore for the simple reason of accessibility. I am on the parkway in 3 minutes. When I get stuck at the light and it takes me 4-5 minutes, I get annoyed. We are also huge beach people and have a boat. The North Shore beaches and boating just wasn't cutting it. My particular property is pretty big but generally the properties were much smaller than the north shore. My taxes are still pretty high. My particular neighborhood is pretty and my block is windy but the majority of my town is a grid and it's not as attractive as the north shore.

I would have been happy on either shore. I don't know that I would have been happy in the Plainview area for the simple fact that it is a nightmare to drive there. The traffic and congestion are insane. Like a PP said, the Bethpage area is nice and seems less congested.

Re: North shore vs south shore

We live central - right off the LIE - it is convenient. Living on the shores was not anything I desired when buying a house. Weird, I know, but I found central to be more desirable - you were closer to highways and central to both shores which are completely different.

All that said - we're selling our house and moving off the Island, but it's totally unrelated to anything regarding the location. If I could I would have stayed in my home for life, but life had other plans.

We searched in many different neighborhoods (massapequa, commack, Syosset, etc) and ultimately bought in POB. I LOVE the neighborhood and the schools are incredible. Everyone says how nasty people are here and how awful driving is here. My visitors always complain.

South shore girl here. I grew up in Merrick and bought my home a few towns over. I love being close to the sandy beaches and love that all parkways are close. People are down to earth. What I can’t stand is the congestion and small properties.

I work on the north shore and while I love the larger beautiful properties and homes, I have found that many of the people I come into contact daily are just rude, inconsiderate, think they are better than you, and that their time is more important than yours. Running errands in the area on lunch or after work is painful at times. This is north shore Nassau (Plainview, Jericho, Syosset, Muttontown, Oyster Bay Cove areas) Just my opinion, but I see I’m not the only one that feels that way.

I think those types of people are everywhere honestly. I grew up on the south shore and there were/are plenty of entitled brats. I actually find where I live now (on the north shore) to be way more down to earth! I think if anyone here is really looking for a change of pace, don’t compare two shores off the same island.
