black birthday cake?

if you "had" to buy a black birthday cake...

would you do fondant because it's easily removed from the cake and the guests could more easily control not having black lips, teeth, and tongue

or

would you do butter cream because if you're guests are going to have to live through black lips, teeth, and tongue... at least butter cream tastes better than fondant

Fondant. I''m one of the weirdos that likes the way it tastes, but even knowing most people don't, it is better because it is less messy, and will probably be a truer black.

I’m not a fan of fondant but given the circumstances, this makes the most sense. People who don’t like it will peel it off and it will look better

Another vote for fondant. I had to carve up a full sheet cake for the cub scouts, and it was blue/white butter cream. My hands were dyed blue for two days. It was terrible. I would not want to do that again.

I agree. I’ve seen buttercream under the fondant. That could be an option.

#1 it tastes disgusting when you add the black food coloring to buttercream most times. Weird aftertaste.

#2 Depending on the bakery, you risk not getting a "true" black.

Fondant is def the way to go. Worth the extra $$$ for a good black.

ETA-Fondant cakes will *always* have a layer of buttercream underneath, you don't need to request it. It's used to keep the fondant in place - called crumb coat.

the baker told me about the layer of buttercream.

originally, i was worried about a true black, but the baker confirmed (and shared pictures) that they can get a true black in buttercream.

i just didn't know about the after taste... yuck.

looks like we're going with fondant!

the more color you add to frosting, the more of an aftertaste. You can actually start with a chocolate buttercream recipe and then add black to it. The chocolate will lessen the amount of black coloring you need to add.

As a cake decorator, black fondant for sure.

Black buttercream would stain your teeth and it's hard to get a TRUE black. It sometimes even alters the flavor of the frosting.

All fondant cakes have a layer of buttercream underneath.

I don’t like cake much, but if I had to choose, I’d choose buttercream. I wouldn’t care if my tongue turned black. I’d laugh it off, and go brush my teeth when I got home.

HAHA yes happened to us too...The cake had black swirl designs and everyone teeth were black. It was a buttercream cake.

Does it have to be really black?

If so then do fondant it's easy to take off.

If you can get away with it maybe a do a chocolate ganache cake. That's what we did for my mom's 60th birthday. Her theme was gold and black.
