I’m terrified to fly but I have one scheduled for next month - and have my Valium prescription ready to pick up! I’ve noticed that most flights that have had really bad issues tend to not be the jet planes in the US - usually they’re private planes. This seems to be the first in a while.
I’m hoping that now that this happened, the other airlines are going to be more diligent in air safety so they don’t have the same bad PR.
Yes. I mean statistically the chances of anything happening are slim. If you think about all the flights that go up all over the world every single day. It's really minuscule the percentage that have any kind of issue. It's still the safest way to travel, statistically speaking i am sure. But that's not much comfort to those people on that flight I would imagine.

My DH is the biggest baby about flying and of course this happens 3 days before we leave for our trip. This is horrifying. That poor woman. Can you think of a worse freak way to die?! Horrible! And all those people on the plane having to endure that. I don't know how any of them got back on a plane to get to their destination.

Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
The one thing that struck me, besides the terrible tragedy of the event, is the picture that is floating around showing all of the passengers that have their oxygen masks on WRONG!! The yellow part needs to cover your mouth AND nose!! This just shows the number of people that do not pay attention when the flight attendants are giving the safety procedures.
Two things that I have been reminded about, for my future flights, pay attention to the flight attendants and to always wear my seat belt while seated. I have no idea if this would've made a difference but I am not taking any chances.

What struck me too is the guy who took a fuking SELFIE wearing the oxygen mask when he thought the plane was going down. And posted it somewhere on social media saying the plane is going down. Who does that? Who even thinks to do that in that situation? This world has gone to hell in a handbasket thanks to social media. One day alien life forms will come here and take us over because we have just become vapid, stupid, easy targets for a life form with a higher intelligence.

I would probably be messaging my family if I thought my plane was going down! Especially since wifi is the only thing that works on a plane, no regular texting, phone calls, etc.!
I just read "In the seats behind her, passengers sent goodbye text messages, tightened oxygen masks around their faces and braced for impact. But Capt. Tammie Jo Shults was in control."

My DH is the same and this has set him back. He has been so good lately at being calm and the Xanax has been working. We are going on two trips in May. It will be rough but I can empathize when the Hoboken train crashed right behind me, it tool me 6 months before I would go near that station.
So scary and sad.

Was on a southwest flight on Saturday. Flying again next Thursday and Sunday with them. Will be business as usual. You are statistically way more likely to be killed by a drunk driver than on an airplane. Way more likely.
I wonder how much the usually jovial SW FAs will be cracking jokes during the safety speech like they normally do. “Flight becomes a cruise” and such like that. I suspect they will be toning it down a bit for a while.

That guy was on GMA this morning. He said that he wanted to be sure he could say goodbye to as many people as possible so instead of putting on his oxygen mask, he grabbed his laptop so he could do Facebook live.

I think I'd chose putting on my oxygen mask. So maybe I could be saved and see my loved ones again, instead of having to say goodbye on Facebook.

Yeah I heard this too.
Nobody knows what they would do unless they were in it. Hopefully I never have to find out how I would handle this situation.

Can't say I disagree with that.
Knowing myself, I wouldn't put on my oxygen mask either. I would be in a complete panic, screaming nonsensical statements, being completely useless and incoherent. I am the last person you want around in an emergency. I am that person you see in the old cartoons getting hit in the head with the frying pan to shut up.

We were on a flight from Miami to LGA recently, and around Philly/NJ we hit SO much turbulence, we dropped like 1,000 feet, and kept doing it for like a good 45 minutes, and I was FREAKING out! My kids were like omg what is wrong with you as they have their hands in their air like WEEEE. I panic in certain situations and just get spastic. Working on it!

Crazy! I hate flying as is..
Also I heard they had just done a maintenance check on the plane a few days prior to the incident.
Yep. Someone was negligent. How did they not see what the NTSB called "obvious signs of metal fatigue" on that engine? Doesn't make me feel good at all about how they check these planes.
I have to agree with you here. They check them, but it’s about how LONG they check them for. The airline hires out their own mechanics, and, from what I understand, they try to get them to do it quickly, so they can make as much profit as possible by getting the planes out on time.
And when you think about these airlines weigh out profit vs. insurance (if there were an accident). Usually the profit wins. I mean who cares if you lose 100 lives (I do!) if they are making a big profit.
I also think they need to train the pilots better. They need basic skills. Yes, the planes fly themselves, but then some pilots don’t completely know what to do if they do not have the computers working (e.g. Air France 447; they couldn’t get out of a stall when the instruments failed, which is pilot 101).
Watch the 60 minutes from last week. It’s really eye-opening to the way the FAA has changed.

Re: Southwest plane's engine explodes-makes emergency landing in Philly
We flew today on JetBlue. As we're taxing the guy in front of me has paper and was reading the story with the headline "passenger almost got sucked out"! I'm a really bad flier but I do it a lot. I had my 3 kids with me and I had to focus hard not to freak out. Thankfully it was a really smooth flight!

On the news this morning the NTSB was saying the engine that came apart showed obvious signs of wear. Don't they inspect these fuking planes before they fly? Was this kind of wear not noticeable? Disturbing.
Yes the pilot or co pilot always does a pre check walk around the plane before every flight.
Not sure how often Maintanence checks each plane without being notified of an issue first.

I am not positive the pilot or co pilot do a pre check walk around the plane every time. In my experience I see the pilots come through security, and then speak to gate agent and go through jetbridge and enter the cockpit.

My husband is a pilot for a major airline, they do pre checks before every flight. He has worked for 2 large airlines and it is the same protocol.
Yes they enter the plane first (drop off kit bag over night bag etc) but one of them leaves and checks outside.
